''Dougal and the Blue Cat'' (1970/1972), the first movie, was itself a cult classic. It contained a satirical parody of racism (Blue is beautiful! Blue is best! I'm blue! I'm beautiful! I'm best!) as well as the first (and only?) songs to appear in a Magic Roundabout setting. The other film, a CGI version titled simply ''The Magic Roundabout'' (2005), had a much more epic plot and was later released in the US [[HistoryRepeats (with all but two of the original British voices re-dubbed)]] as ''Doogal''. Despite its promise, the American release failed to capture the spirit of the original series and fell into obscurity.

* AlternativeForeignThemeSong: Most of the music used in the French dub of the 2005 film adaptation is unique in several scenes, since the English dubs (as well as other foreign-language versions of the film) used more insert pop songs. For example:
** A different lyrical song is used during a dream sequence, as opposed to the Electric Light Orchestra song "Mr. Blue Sky" used in the English versions.
** The title song performed at the end of the film and through the end credits in the English versions, is moved to the ''opening'' credits in the French dub, while another different lyrical song is performed at the end of the film (the opening credits in the English dubs use the Pilot song "Magic").

* BeamOWar: The battle between Zebedee and Zeebad in the 2005 film features this where they respectively fire beams of heat and cold towards each other. It ends with Zebedee being overpowered and trapped in ice by Zeebad.

* BrickJoke: In the 2005 film, Dougal volunteers to "fix" the puncture of the tire of Mr. Grimsdale's sugar cart while he goes to get the things Dougal requested. Mr. Grimsdale does return at the end of the film with all the things Dougal requested, only to find Dougal on the Magic Roundabout who is hiding awkwardly from him.

* CatsHaveNineLives: In the US redub of the film, when the team is discussing who would obtain the first gem, Ermintrude brings this trope up when discussing Dylan:

However, her high note is so loud that it causes icicles to fall and almost impale Brian, but one gigantic icicle crushes Dougal's bag of gobstoppers. Towards the climax, [[spoiler:when Zeebad tries to zap Dylan, but he zaps Ermintrude's tail, causing her to scream in pain, resulting in a crack on the frozen carousel to form, giving Dougal an idea on how to free the children who are trapped in there. * DeathGlare:
** In the 2005 film, Ermintrude, Dylan and Brian all give Dougal one after they immediately realize he let slip the information about the map to Zeebad when he demands the map after taking the first diamond.
*** When Soldier Sam meekly joins in with Zeebad's laughter, he gets one from Zeebad who says to him that he is ruining the moment.
*** In the climax of the film, Dougal, Ermintrude, Dylan and Brian all shoot Zeebad one. It even has the close-ups shots of Dougal and Ermintrude's scowled eyes before it cuts to Dylan cracking his knuckles and then it cuts to Brian when Dylan picks him up to put him on Ermintrude's back.
** Florence sometimes does this to Dougal in some episodes in the 2007 revival series to show her disappointment or displeasure if he did something bad. A good example of this happens in "Higgledy Piggledy" where she gives Dougal one when he is about to strike the potato into the final hole after she had caught him cheating earlier at the previous hole to try and make Ermintrude lose.
* DemBones: All the temple skeletons in the 2005 film are completely animate with [[GlowingEyelightsOfUndeath glowing purple eyes]] [[PullingThemselvesTogether and having the ability to pull themselves back together]] when they get smashed up by Dylan until they are reduced into piles of scattered bones where they merge into one gigantic skeleton who menaces on the gang until Dougal gets rid of him by activating the trapdoor underneath. He does reappear in the mines to try and attack the gang once more as they were on their way back to the Magic Roundabout before he gets smacked off Train's carriage by a low hanging support plank.
* DemotedToExtra:
** In Series 3 of the original series, most episodes have the focus leaning more on Dougal, Florence, Zebedee, Brian and Ermintrude whilst Dylan, Mr. Rusty, Mr. [=McHenry=] and Train are reduced to having supporting roles and even sometimes background appearances or cameos on occasion. Regardless, they still have a fair amount of appearances in this series.
** Florence's role in the 2005 film was reduced from being a deuteragonist to being a supporting character as she spends less screen time in the film due to being trapped in the frozen roundabout. Mr. Rusty was also reduced to being a supporting character as he was too being trapped in the frozen roundabout along with two other children Basil and Coral. The 2007 revival series has Florence resuming her role as the deuteragonist of the franchise.

** Also, in the 2005 film [[spoiler:Zebedee]] upon battling Zeebad, and later [[spoiler:Florence]], after [[spoiler:being trapped in the frozen roundabout]]. Luckily, [[spoiler:Zebedee]] is revealed to be alive near the end, and [[spoiler:Dougal manages to revive Florence with kisses]].

* DreadfulMusician: Dougal, Dylan and Brian qualify in "The Moody Concerto" where their music was so awful that Florence, who was listening and couldn't stand anymore of it, has to step in and fix the issue by turning the music sheets the right way up.

* DreamIntro: The 2005 film begins with Zebedee chased by Zeebad in a snowy wasteland until he gets to a cliff. Then, he is blasted off the cliff by Zeebad and left hanging for dear life from the ledge of Zeebad's lair. Zeebad blasts Zebedee off the ledge, sending him falling into the abyss right before Zebedee suddenly wakes up, revealing that it was only a bad dream.
* DubInducedPlotlineChange: The American dub of the 2005 film was called ''Doogal'', and was advertised as an action-adventure film. It ended up being a mess of pop culture references, lame jokes, toilet humor, and TotallyRadical dialogue, all seemingly because the distributors believed that [[ViewersAreMorons American audiences wouldn't know what the hell the original series was]]. The dub ended up bombing at the box office and ended Jon Stewart's film career.

* EasilyForgiven:
** At the end of "Dougal and the Blue Cat", the gang, including Dougal, forgives Buxton for his evil actions when they see him tearfully remorseful and begging for forgiveness.
** In the 2005 film, the gang weren't too pleased that Dougal spilled the beans about the map to Zeebad who took it from them. After Zeebad and Sam left them stranded in the volcano, the gang don't seem to hold any grudge against Dougal at any point in the film.
* EruditeStoner: Dylan, although obviously he was never actually ''said'' to be stoned. He was just tired a lot. Really. However, the 2005 movie got a lot more blatant, including Brian chiding him that "This is no time to experiment with exotic substances!"
* EndlessWinter: Zeebad's EvilPlan was to freeze the sun and bring about a new Ice Age.

* EvilOverlooker: The British posters and other promotional material as well as the DVD cover of the 2005 film have Zeebad's face projected in the sky background just behind the main characters.

* ExtremelyShortTimespan:
** The entire plot of "Dougal and the Blue Cat" happens entirely in one day.
** The majority of the 2005 film takes place around the course of four days and three nights.
* {{Facepalm}}: Mr. Rusty does this in the daydream sequence in the 2005 film when listening to Ermintrude singing the lyrics of "Mr. Blue Sky" from one of the sails of the windmill.

* FingerWag:
** In the Eric Thompson version of "The Lost Boing", Florence gives Brian one when scolding him for using Zebedee's lost spring.
** In the 2005 film during the daydream sequence, Florence gives Dougal a "no-no" finger wag when she catches him messily scoffing down a trifle in a picnic.
* {{Flanderization}}: With the exception of Florence, Zebedee, Mr. Rusty, Mr. Grimsdale and the children, the characters fell in this in the American dub of the 2005 film where they have different and unfitting character personalities than in the original British and French versions of the film or the original series itself. For example, Dougal was flanderized as a fat, cowardly idiot. Fortunately, the 2007 revival series kept the characters in their original character personalities from the original series, albeit with a few modifications.

** In the 2005 film, when Sam corners Dougal and his friends, Zebedee intervenes and says, "You may wear a soldier's uniform, Sam, but it's what's inside that counts." [[spoiler:Later, near the climax, the third diamond is revealed to be hidden inside Sam when Zeebad fatally wounds him.]]

* FourLeafClover: The entire plot point in "Dylan's Lucky Day", Dylan finds a clover which brings good luck. Dougal finds out about it and offers to look after the clover for Dylan, hoping to get good luck, but it only brings bad luck to Dougal throughout the episode, prompting him to give back the clover to Dylan at Ermintrude's concert.

* LaserHallway: In the 2005 film, the laser beams in the room in the temple activate once Dougal pushes a button on the throne that reveals the second diamond. Though no one would go through the laser beam without tripping them, Ermintrude volunteers to make her way to the diamond where she narrowly avoids tripping one of them. Unfortunately, Dougal was having his last gobstopper at the time, begins to praise Ermintrude and accidentally spits the gobstopper out, causing it to bounce off the throne and tripping one of the laser beams, setting off the alarm to which the skeletons burst in the room from the ground and advance on the gang.
* LavaPit: In the 2005 film, the first diamond is located in a [[LavaPotVolcano lava-bordered volcano]] where the gang has to cross a narrow and crumbling bridge where they suffered a near-death experience. The bridge is later destroyed by Zeebad and Sam after taking the first diamond and the map from the gang. Also, the post-credits scene reveals Zeebad's prison to be nothing more but a lava-filled cavern underground and way underneath the Magic Roundabout.

** Dougal unwittingly spills the beans to Zeebad about the map which allows him to not only steal the map from the gang but to take the two diamonds that the gang was looking for. Dylan lampshades this after Zeebad took the second diamond in the temple. Also in the temple, Dougal accidentally tripping one of the alarm beams with his gobstoppers causing skeletons to burst out from underneath to try and attack him and the gang allows Zeebad the opportunity to take the second diamond while they are distracted of defeating the skeletons.

** The gang all have one after Dougal accidentally caused one of his gobstoppers to trip one of the alarm beams guarding the second diamond where the skeletons burst out to try and attack them.
** The gang, when the skeleton overlord begins to chase after them. They have the same reaction again when the skeleton overload suddenly appears at the back of Train's carriage.
** The gang all have one when Zeebad tries to drill into Train's carriage. Sam begins to have one when he sees that this causes the pressure in the driller train's boiler to reach critical and eventually blow up.

* PigLatin: In the US dub of the 2005 film, Doogal attempts to prevent Zeebad from finding the diamonds by stating that the map leading to them is in Pig Latin. This backfires when Zeebad counters with "icenay ytray".

* ProductPlacement: In the US redub of the 2005 film, Dylan mentions two chocolate bars in one scene--Snickers and Three Musketeers. Later in the same redub, Zeebad fantasizes getting a Humvee after taking over the world.

* ReferenceOverdosed: The American dub of the 2005 film is infamous for this, with dozens of pop-culture references being added to the script.

** The three diamonds in the 2005 film that are needed to re-imprison Zeebad with the blue one located at the volcano, the yellow one located in the temple, and the red one supposedly hidden somewhere on the roundabout.

* SassyBlackWoman: Ermintrude is retooled to be this in the American dub of the film, thanks to her more sarcastic attitude and her [[Creator/WhoopiGoldberg voice actress]].

* SealedEvilInACan: In the 2005 film, the titular roundabout is revealed to be the Can for Zebedee's evil twin Zeebad once the roundabout ends up severely damaged and spinning out of control as a result of the sugar cart exploding after Dougal accidentally made it crash right on top of the roundabout, it gives Zeebad the opportunity to escape and freeze the roundabout over. *** When Soldier Sam struggles to walk after Zeebad activates him, Zeebad replies with "This ain't [[Theatre/TheNutcracker the ballet, nutcracker]]".
*** After recruiting Sam into his plans, Zeebad mockingly calls Zebedee "[[Film/SongOfTheSouth Zebedee-Doo-Dah]]".
*** When Train first appears, he pulls an ActorAllusion by saying "[[Creator/ChevyChase I'm the train, and you're not]]".
*** Being a bunny, Dylan says "[[WesternAnimation/BugsBunny What's up, doc?]]" during the camping scene. Much later, during the credits, Creator/JudiDench says ThatsAllFolks verbatim.

*** As Doogal and his friends find themselves trapped in the volcano thanks to Zeebad's meddling, Ermintrude states her intentions to go out singing like [[Music/ArethaFranklin Aretha]].

This causes Brian to land on the roof of the driller train and ends up spilling the beans about the third diamond, due to being blindfolded by his scarf which lets Zeebad know where the heroes are going.

** In the 2005 film while looking around the room in the temple, Dougal spots a throne and climbs onto it where he finds two buttons on each armrest. He assumes the one on the right is the recline button and presses it, this causes the podium to rise revealing the second diamond and activating the alarm beams. Later when the giant skeleton is attacking the gang, Dougal retreats to the throne where he sees another button on the left armrest and pushes it to see what will happen to the skeleton. The button activates the trapdoor underneath the skeleton which he soon falls into the mines. Shortly afterwards when Zeebad took the second diamond and was cornering the gang, Dougal, under Ermintrude's command, pushes the said button again, sending both Zeebad and Sam into the mines.

** In the 2005 film whilst on the journey to the mountains where they will make camp for the night before starting their quest to find the two diamonds, Brian, Ermintrude and Dylan give Dougal one in shades for causing the escape of Zeebad.

** In "Special Delivery", when Dougal sees Fly pestering Mr. Grimsdale, he runs to stop him from eating his pies, but causes Mr. Grimsdale to crash into the bandstand. The accident resulted in Mr. Grimsdale injuring his back and his bike being broken that Florence forces Dougal to do the rest of the deliveries on the pull cart. While delivering the things that Dylan needed, Dougal uses Train to do the rest of the deliveries, leaving behind the cart which Dylan falls asleep in and rolls into the village. After finishing the deliveries where he delivers the pies at Florence's house, Dougal sets out to look for her only to encounter the scarecrow that Dylan has built. Mistaking it for a monster who has kept Dylan hostage, Dougal rallies Ermintrude and Brian to help him tackle the monster. When they do, they realise their mistake as they have destroyed the scarecrow just as Dylan shows up with Florence and Mr. Rusty. Just as Dylan begins to feel devastated, Florence reassures him that Dougal will make up for it by helping Dylan make another scarecrow, as well as having to force Dougal into doing that by clearing her throat when he tries to get out of this.

** Dylan also grabs it in "Rockstar Dylan", when he becomes an arrogant and rude rock star under Dougal's mentoring when his guitar begins to sound like an electric rock guitar, due to Zebedee's mischief. Eventually, Dougal realizes how rude Dylan is being and leaves him, leaving Dylan alone to realize the error of his ways until Florence later comes to comfort him after hearing his sad song. She and Dylan realise that his guitar has been tampered by Zebedee's magic and they call him over to reprimand him for tampering with Dylan's guitar.

* LetsGetDangerous: Dougal, Ermintrude, Dylan, and Brian are ready to battle Zeebad in the climax of the 2005 film. Even Dylan cracks his knuckles before he picks up Brian and loads him on Ermintrude's back.

* PigLatin: In the US dub of the 2005 film, Doogal attempts to prevent Zeebad from finding the diamonds my stating that the map leading to them is in Pig Latin. This backfires when Zeebad counters with "icenay ytray".

* ProductPlacement: In the US redub of the 2005 film, Dylan mentions two chocolate bars in one scene--Snickers and Three Musketeers.

* HypcriticalHumor: In the 2005 film, when Brian tries to communicate with the moose, Ermintrude (a talking cow) asks if anyone heard of a talking moose before? Train lampshades this.

''The Magic Roundabout'' is an English dub for a French stop-motion show, ''Le Manège Enchanté''. When it was translated into English by Eric Thompson (father of actresses [[Creator/EmmaThompson Emma]] and Sophie), rather than voice act the characters, he chose to narrate the whole thing himself. Because Thompson despised the original writing, he dubbed the show based purely on the animation, including many gags that [[ParentalBonus appealed to parents]]. It subsequently became a CultClassic in the United Kingdom and was adapted into two feature films. Many viewers of the French show, unaware of the redub, were baffled by the show's English popularity.

In the early 1990s, after Thompson's death, Creator/{{Channel 4}} acquired some episodes that had not been translated and hired Creator/NigelPlaner to adapt them in a pastiche of Thompson's style.

* LockedInTheDungeon: This happens to Florence and everyone else, except for Dougal, where they are chained up in the treacle factory dungeons. To make matters worse, they couldn't escape because Buxton was now in the possession of Zebedee's mustache much to the wizard's fury. During Madam Blue's VillainousBreakdown in the climax, Dougal frees Florence and all his friends from their chains.

* DeusExMachina:
** Zebedee serves as this in the original series (and occasionally in the CGI reboot series as well) to solve the protagonists' problems.
** Subverted at the climax of the 2005 film when Zeebad has managed to get hold of the third diamond again, Dylan tries to summon Train (who had injured one of his wheels after the chase) with Zebedee's magic box, but to no avail and throws the box at Zeebad out of frustration, before the ice wizard begins to reclaim his victory while the gang are ready to give up in defeat. But this is suddenly played straight when an healed Train surprisingly appears and runs Zeebad over from behind, flattening him and knocking the diamond out of his grasp. This gives Dougal the chance to chase after it and head-butts it into its slot on the roundabout thus activating its magic to re-imprison Zeebad.

*** After Zeebad takes the second diamond, he asks them where the third diamond is. They refuse and promptly back away as Zeebad advances towards them while saying [[Series/StarTrekTheNextGeneration "Resistance is futile."]] This reference is ([[ReferenceOverdosed fittingly]]) kept in the film's American redub.

** Dougal unwittingly spills the beans to Zeebad about the map which allows him to not only steal the map from the gang but to take the two diamonds that the gang was looking for. Dylan lampshades this after Zeebad took the second diamond in the temple.
