The stories often throw in more obscure Dungeons and Dragons concepts, such as Lolth the Spider Goddess and always lining up draconic breath weapons. While a lot of things get majorly simplified for the sake of the plot, there's no doubt that this was done consciously, not lazily.

* TheComplainerIsAlwaysWrong: The reason behind Eric's creation, dictated largely by ExecutiveMeddling -- and the reason series co-developer MarkEvanier particularly disliked the character. [[SubvertedTrope Subverted]] in the second season a good number of times, though.

* NoSwastikas: One episode featured Venger messing with a time portal to our world, hoping to erase the kids from history by arming a Nazi fighter pilot with a 21st-century jet. [[spoiler:Luckily for the kids, the pilot was a {{Turncoat}} who loathed Hitler's regime (and hit it off with HotAmazon Diana, too).]] More to the point, the tell-tale armband that he tries to ditch lost the swastika it bore in the story-boards and turned into a ''[[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balkenkreuz Balkankreuz]]'' (in a [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_flag red circle on a white background]], no less! Which [[ImperialJapan Axis power]] did he fly for, again?).

** Lukion is recognizable as a "Shambling Mound", an animate mass of swamp-plants loosely inspired by SwampThing and ManThing.

* OohMeAccentsSlipping: Sir John in "Eye of the Beholder" has the worst English accent since [[MaryPoppins Dick Van Dyke]], while Josef Müller in "The Time Lost" cannot properly pronounce even his own German name.

* In one episode, the kids figure out that they're talking to a Dungeon Master impostor, because his answers ''aren't cryptic enough.''

** Sheila gets a few blink-and-miss pantyshots during the series, while Diana ''flashes one of her breasts'' when she looks at her reflection on a magical mirror. That scene is pure FanDisservice, though.

** That's nothing: Tiamat and Uni are [[{{Transformers}} Megatron, Soundwave...half the original Transformers]], [[ScoobyDoo Freddie Jones]], [[{{Disney/Aladdin}} Abu]], [[QuestForCamelot Ayden]], [[CatsDontDance Farley Wink]]... well, you get the picture.

* AdultFear: Oh boooooy. We have Hank [[spoiler: being forced to betray his friends to keep a kidnapped Bobby alive]], Venger kidnapping children from Earth via portals, Varla's parents being unable to keep their BarrierMaiden daughter safe from Venger...

* RetCanon: Cavaliers, acrobats, and barbarians were not classes in the original ''DungeonsAndDragons'' TabletopRPG; they appeared in the show first and were added to the game shortly afterwords in ''Unearthed Arcana''.

* AdultFear: Oh boooooy. We have Hank [[spoiler: being forced to betrya his friends to keep a kidnapped Bobby alive]], Venger kidnapping children from Earth via portals, Varla's parents being unable to keep their BarrierMaiden daughter safe from Venger...

* EveryoneCallsHimBarkeep: Dungeon Master is known only by his title and, likewise, he almost always addresses the kids by their titles. (Venger does the same, but his relationship with the kids is hardly a first-name one)

* IChooseToStay: Although not shown, it's implied in the script for the last episode that instead of going home, the kids choose to stay in the Realm to fight evil.
* [[IfYouKillHimYouWillBeJustLikeHim If You Kill Him, You Will Be Just Like Him]]: The climax of "The Dragon's Graveyard".

* LonelyRichKid: Eric is hinted to have been this in the real world.
* LovableCoward: Eric's usual response to danger is to run away and hide. The one time he declared "Everbody get behind my shield!", his compatriots afterward expressed surprise that he'd actually grown a backbone for a second or two.
