The movie was (mostly) critically panned by reviewers, who found issues with its thin plot and, at times, annoying characters, as well as the story as a whole being an alleged rehash of [[TheLionKing more succesful]] [[{{Pocahontas}} Disney movies]]. Overall, it was felt that the movie stood especially weak if compared to original Disney classics. Despite the critical issues, the movie was a slight commercial success and even spawned its own DirectToVideo sequel, ''Brother Bear 2''. In hindsight, however, it's gained a little bit of popularity, mainly due to the awesome soundtrack provided by PhilCollins.
