The only aspect from the first movie will be that Mario and Peach are still the main characters. However, Toad and Donkey Kong will be replaced by Luigi and Yoshi.
It’s been unanimously agreed that Luigi needed more screentime. Miyamoto and Meledandri are reading every complaint. Mario and Luigi will go on an actual adventure together as damage control. If they do get separated, it will only be briefly. In fact, the movie will focus more on Luigi, mirroring how the first movie was about Mario. It will be Luigi who finds Yoshi, a possible plot point being that they need to return Yoshi to his herd, but Luigi slowly finds himself bonding with the dinosaur.
Toad will be DemotedToExtra, opting to stay behind to look after the Mushroom Kingdom. Donkey Kong on the other hand will be PutOnABus, not appearing at all. The only reference to DK will be Mario asking if they can recruit him, only for Peach to reply that he has “his own problems”. However, it will be explained what he was doing during the events of the sequel through a spin-off movie.
