** Not all countries in RealLife actually have long range AM radio. For example, Russia discontinued its AM radio broadcasting in 2010s and only uses FM radio, which has a very short range. So Russia may be alive and kicking, its climate (which is infamously even colder than the Nordic countries) protecting it from the worst of the apocalypse, but they simply don't broadcast any long range radio because they don't have the equipment and don't feel the need to acquire it, the country being infamously at odds with a lot of Western countries.
