At the very least he's from an affluent background, most likely his family owned an engineering and aerospace corporation not on Pumadyne's scale but large enoughthat Jake had a mostly privileged background; why he joined the Enforcers could be any number of reasons, to make his way, outright rebellion or the Clawsons have a history of military service, etc. Admittedly it's been used in a few fanfics and would explain why Jake never visited Chance's old neighborhood until after they were booted from the Enforcers, the two met at the Enforcers Academy and hit it off not only in spite but due to their differences with Chance respecting Jake's decision to not be a RichIdiotWithNoDayJob. * Jake was disowned either when he joined the Enforcers or Feral booted him out. Really would explain his eagerness to start the SWAT Kats in the flashback, he had little left to lose..

Feral calls them vigilantes because they aren't under his direct command, they technically answer to the Mayor's office (which means they actually report to Callie, of course, which explains her vocal support of them when being interviewed) and instead of being paid they occasionally get supplies from Megakat City like the replacement jets they get at various points in the series or to deal with the VillainOfTheWeek like the tanks of super-cooled nitrogen M.A.S.A provided to stop Dr. Viper. Callie sold Mayor Manx on the fact that the SWAT Kats provide most of their own gear and don't technically charge for their services and the fact that Manx still refers to them as vigilantes is plausible deniability on his part. Notably, Feral only really tries to arrest the SWAT Kat when he thinks they're actually committing crimes and not being their usual DestructiveSavior selves, otherwise he just bitches at them instead of detaining them because according to the Mayor's office he ''can't''. The reason Feral wants to discover their identities and Jake and Chance are concerned about that happening is that he hopes that he can nail them for other crimes like, say, [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking unauthorized use of military salvage, creation of weapons of mass destruction and flying without a valid pilot's license]]?

[[WMG: Jake is a BlueBlood to contrast Chance's blue-collar background.]]

* Jake's parents are deceased and he was an only child, or his siblings are angry with him for besmirching the family name.
* Jake was disowned either when he joined the Enforcers or Feral booted him out. Really would explain his eagerness to start the SWAT Kats in the flashback, he had little left to lose..
* Jake is on good terms with his family but is keeping his distance out of concern that Feral might turn on them instead of letting Jake work off the damage "he" caused that day. If their company is a smaller one then Jake really doesn't want Feral tossing the bill for millions of dollars of damage their way.

While Jake doesn't act sophisticated as such, he has been in the Enforcers and a SWAT KAT for several years by the time we see him in the show's present, long enough for any social graces to change to match Chance's.

Very much like [[{{Franchise/Fallout}} the Vaults]], only this one ''was'' designed to protect and train survivors from nuclear fallout in the worst case scenario while allowing the launch of fighter craft for reconnaissance and defense, probably stocked with a fair supply of jet fuel, too. As talented as Jake is, it is just not feasible that he and Chance could have built up the base entirely on their own; the Reflex Room wasn't initially as complex as it's shown in the show, it was a standard training course until Razor modified it further and the various training equipment we see was already there and Razor modified that as well. The reason it's secret is most likely bureaucratic coverups that buried the base's location and no one in the current administration actually knows it's out there or Feral wouldn't have considered it punishment for Jake and Chance, as far as he knows it really is just a a scrapyard.

[[WMG: Turmoil is from the same country that fought Megakat City in Mega-War II and may even be a descendant of the Red Lynx.]]
It's mostly the vaguely Germanic accents, but it would explain Turmoil's decision to conquer Megakat City beyond "it's Megakat City and that sort of thing just happens there," she's trying to avenge/make up for her ancestor's defeat at the Blue Manx's hands. Even if she's not a direct descendant of the Lynx, national pride would be an equally strong motive for controlling the skies of Megakat City.

[[WMG: The SWAT Kats are actually private military contractors working for Megakat City's government instead of vigilantes.]]

The nail is that they obeyed Feral and Dark Kat was stopped and exposed as a judge. Jake still invents stuff to help and Feral reluctantly overlooks the hotheadness whenever it helps since he has more respect for them than for Steele. Alternate Jake will comment that he also made a dimensional radar but was never allowed to test it with Enforcer vehicles.

Apparently Cartoon Network gave the fans a hard time by turning down on it, and the Trembly Brothers should halved sued them for that.

* Partially confirmed, insofar as the storyboards for "Enter the Madkat" prove that the nameplate spelling is an error. It ''was'' supposed to say S-T-E-E-L in the episodes, but the animators goofed.

*If so, Feral gets them from the same cloning facility that the nuclear plant in "The Wrath of Dark Kat" got their guards and Katscratch got his mobster {{Mooks}} in "The Metallikats."

* AFAIK, there were no further plans to use Steel(e) in any episodes past "Enter the Madkat." That said, we know nothing about what would've been in a potential third season, since they never even finished the first.
