* Gofer suggests otherwise in Gradius IV. However, because this is his first chronological assault on Gradius (Gradius II wouldn't occur until many generations later), it's possible he didn't realize or anticipate the behavior of his own cell structure.

[[WMG: Dr. Venom is the original creator of the Bacterions]]

In a version of events where the Northern Cross War did not occur, Dr. Venom was arbitrarily attempting to play God and create some form of lab-grown life, only to scrap it when he assumed it to be a failure. When it eventually [[GoneHorriblyRight attacked Gradius]], he realized its true nature, and used this to his advantage during the events of MSX Gradius 2 and beyond, essentially making him TheManBehindTheMan all the way up to Gradius V, set conveniently at the end of the series timeline, before the Bacterion threat is officially declared over. In the Northern Cross War timeline created during Gofer No Yabou Episode II, The Bacterion will themselves into existence, and still respond to Dr. Venom when his coup fails.

[[WMG: The scattered remnants of Bacterion generals/hive minds are cannibalistic]]

Every time a leader is defeated, it's scattered pieces seek each other out in order to battle and consume each other, escalating in power and intelligence from simple "prey-or-predator" nature to off-screen cosmic battles to build strength and establish dominance. The one that comes out on top has already assimilated the others, and become a dominant intelligence which will go on to assault Gradius. For this reason, it is unlikely that two or more Bacterion leaders will emerge at the same time, unless a remnant comes into contact with some other powerful or intelligent life-form (possibly leading to the events of Salamander), which more or less assimilates the ''bacterions''.

This also explains its tiny hitbox in some games - damage to the ship's wings can be safely ignored because the recombinator can simply restore peripheral systems and hull plating on the fly, and only hits straight to the main reactor/cockpit will have any permanent effect.

[[WMG:The in-universe reason why there's been no new ''Gradius'' game since 2009 is because the Bacterians took over the universe.]]
Quoting Gofer in ''Gradius IV'': "My body will be broken into pieces and spread across the universe! But with every piece, I will be reborn! Then you will regret having destroyed me!"

Simply put, this repeated blowing up of Bacterian commanders ultimately led to the Bacterians growing to uncontainable levels. [[DownerEnding As a result they took over the universe and with their sheer numbers, any and all resistance efforts have been destroyed.]]

The entire ''Parodius'' series is just a ploy to get Penta into the ''Gradius'' universe so he can destroy the Bacterian by running really fast through them.

[[WMG: The Vic Viper is equipped with a matter replicator]]
The Vic Viper is already a pretty badass starfighter in its own right, but its chief technological innovation is a prototype matter recombinator that allows it to collect debris, break it down into atoms, and rebuild it into usable materials. All the bullets and missiles you fire over the course of the game without ever worrying about depleting ammunition are made from interstellar hydrogen and minor debris from destroyed enemies, and the Viper's upgrades are constructed from more specialised materials that cannot easily be synthesised, which come in the form of the power-up capsules and represent the enemy's internal systems that the Viper can rebuild to suit its own needs.

This also explains its tiny hitbox in some games - damage to the ship's wings can be safely ignored because the recombinator can simply restore peripheral systems and hull plating on the fly, and only hits straight to the main reactor/cockpit will have any permanent effect.

[[WMG: How the Bacterian got defeated permanently]]
Someone in the Gradius universe found out they were a video game with at least some installments available on the Konami MSX Antiques collection, which also happens to host two games starring Pentarou the Penguin... and anyone who watches WeirdVideoGames knows how insane powerful Penta is.

The entire ''Parodius'' series is just a ploy to get Penta into the ''Gradius'' universe so he can destroy the Bacterian by running really fast through them.

In the plot of Gofer No Yabou Episode II/Nemesis III, the Bacterians travel back in time about 15 years before the events of the original game. Because the player travels back after them and destroys Gofer II in the past, pieces of him spread throughout the universe. While it's unclear where the Bacterians truly originated, this loop ends up resulting in the events of the first game and beyond.

''Gradius III'' is subtitled "From Legend to Myth." Consider the steep rise in difficulty.

Bacterions are dark, "demonic" creatures, Red Falcon is "Emperor Demon Gyaba" in Japanese, Black Viper presumably has a similar title like in English, and Galamoth (see WMG.{{Castlevania}}) is obviously an alien. Galamoth didn't appear till 1796 (7807 Gradius year) and Red Falcon didn't appear till 2633 (8644) and Black Viper two years later, both well after ''Gradius IV'', where Gofer broke himself into pieces. Some of the pieces could have landed on Earth as Galamoth and later Red Falcon and Black Viper.

The pilots possess exceptional reflexes in order to survive their treks, the Options are the Bit/Funnel equivalent for the ships, and the original Vic Viper pilot, James Burton, and its designer, Dr. Venom, possessed ESP (similar to Newtypes); thus giving them a method to use the Options the way they do. This carried on to James' descendent, David, who also possessed ESP, survived his mission, and did crazy stuff with his ship's Options. Any other pilot would have had to been enhanced, akin to creating Cyber-Newtypes; hence, how Lord British and the rest of the pilots can use their Options and have lightning-quick reflexes.

The ''[[meaningfulname temporal space fighter]]'' is simply equipped with some sort of proximity-triggered failsafe that warps it away to a previous safe spot before it is destroyed or serious damage is done, the trade-off being a high energy cost (lives and power-ups). This would explain the Vic viper's memetically fragile nature, as well as why the explosion looks like the ship zapped out of existence.

For one, ''Gaiden'' was released in August 1997, five months after the Heaven's Gate mass suicide. Also, if you read up on HG's beliefs, its members believe that the mass suicide that they would eventually commit would take them onboard a spaceship. So when you reach the last boss battle of stage (>1)-8, the boss you fight is the very spaceship that the members suicided their way onto, hence its name "Heaven's Gate."
