* OddlySmallOrganization: The supposedly last line of defense against the aliens command 20 - 30 troops at most. There are various explanations of this state, mostly revolving around some political plot.plot[[note]]The US and Soviet Union (and to a limited extent, China) don't trust each other, given how the game takes place in the Cold War. While the fate of the world ''is'' at stake, the countries of the world also have a vested interest in maintaining the status quo as much as possible: the last thing they want is an organization powerful enough to challenge that status quo. As a result, the Xenonauts are intentionally kept small, to be a specialized strike force. Even when the invasion ramps up to nearly catastrophic levels, the Xenonauts are at that point better equipped to remain an elite strike force rather than taking over the militaries of the world for a more unified defense, especially once it becomes obvious that the aliens are a KeystoneArmy[[/note]]. More justified in this game thanks to the presence of police, soldiers, militias, farmers with shotguns, etc., as well as nations having limited capability to shoot down [=UFOs=] on their own.

* SadisticChoice: The game starts with you setting up Xenonauts headquarters, and prominently showing your radar coverage from that base. ''Immediately'' after you select your starting location, you will receive reports of alien activity ''everywhere else'' in the world, outside your coverage. You can either expand as quickly as possible and hope to keep the activity as low as possible to prevent the funding nations from getting upset at your inability to deal with their incidents, or you can save the money and hope that you'll be able to expand before the funding nation gets so upset as to withdraw entirely. Both options are terrible, and reflect the fact that you literally can't be everywhere at once, at least not at first.
