* JustFrameBonus: The combat in some of these games on the surface appears to be a button masher, however, the game encourages players to time their attacks accordingly to perform "Cool Combo" attacks, which rewards players with harder hitting attacks than a standard combo and a flashy flourish when an appropriately timed attack is executed. The window in which a Cool Combo strike between certain attacks can be made easier to pull off by increasing the Skill stat. Some combo attacks can branch off based on the timing of certain attacks.

** The series itself owed to ''Dynasty Warriors'' and ''Devil May Cry'', while appealing more to the former early on. By the time of the Z series, the combat and stages became more [=DMC=][=/=]VideoGame/{{Bayonetta}}esque, had smaller arenas,[[note]]Still has a lot of enemies, though not as much from older titles.[[/note]] and allowed you to juggle enemies or do air combos.
** The old entries have no ranking system. They did have a gameplay grading when doing combos similar to [=DMC=], but those did not amount to much. Later games do away with that style of gameplay grading and just go for a standard combo counter and kill combos.
** With the exception of some bosses, all of the cannon fodder you fight are mainly zombies. It is not until the Z games that the player fights werewolves, vampires, and other supernatural creatures.

It really is bordering on fetishistic, such that the soundtrack album cover is of the two characters holding hands on [[http://dengekionline.com/elem/000/000/460/460415/c20120217_anezkaguracd_01_cs1w1_1908x1876.jpg a thoroughly bloodied floor]].
* CanonImmigrant: [=NoNoNo=], from the hostess club series ''[[VideoGame/DreamCClub Dream Club ZERO is joining ZERO]]'' joins the UpdatedRerelease of Onechanbara Z. ''Onechanbara Z''. The Japanese cover art hilariously lampshades this by making the featured duo looking apprehensively at the new character character, whose head [[http://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/2013/34/1377100642-onechanbara-z-ps3-jp-box-art.jpg pokes into the camera view]].
* CastFromHitpoints: Vamp Skills in Z ''Z'' are skills that you obtain from draining the blood of bosses that decreases hitpoints when used. Fortunately, they do not decrease the maximum recoverable HP, so using Blood Recovery to regain lost HP is simple, if time-consuming.

* DeadlyUpgrade: The "Baneful Blood" curse induces a [[UnstoppableRage rage-like state]] when they come in contact with zombie blood. It greatly increases their strength and agility, but slowly burns away at their life force until they die. Under certain conditions, a second, more powerful rage state can be induced.

* ExcusePlot: Scantily clad young women slice up thousands of zombies, spilling gallons of blood and LudicrousGibs in the process. What did you expect? If you answer "a deep plot with complex characters", you will definitely get that, although that certainly isn't the main drawing point...

* InfoDump: Quite unfortunately, most games often dump text as plot rather than integrating it to the gameplay. It isn't until Z that they tried something different and they still did ended up doing a text dump in the middle of the game. To be fair, with the exception of Z, Onechanbara games really were budget games, and so most resources went into the gameplay and not plot. [=VorteX=] and Revolution can really be adequately summed up as an interactive novel interspersed with bikinis, zombies, and hack and slash to break the boredom.
* InterfaceScrew: In ''Zombie Slayers'', blood is splattered across the screen (and will "realistically" drip downwards) every time you hack zombies into bits. Kill multiple enemies in a single attack and almost the ''entire'' screen will be blood-field, but all these effects will last for a few seconds.

* LimitBreak[=/=]SuperMode: In ''Chaos'', both the Baneful Blood and Vampire Sisters get an upgrade from their enraged state. Aya and Saki get Xtatic, and Kagura and Saaya gain access to Dare Drive. Their transformations work similar to [[VideoGame/DevilMayCry Devil Trigger]], though you still lose some health or are more susceptible to damage just like the enraged state. The girls can recover health by killing zombies and getting random drops of blood crystal from them. Also, the girls become more stripperific due to their transformations with the exception of Saaya.
* LongRangeFighter: Annna & Reiko specializes in this with their guns;especially the latter.
* MadeOfIron: Both the Baneful Blood and Vampire sisters are shown to have far greater strength than an ordinary human. Case in point, when Kagura's parachute fails her and she crashes so hard it makes a crater, she simply uses her Blood Recovery and she got off none the worse. Kagura's more concerned about dying from blood loss instead of internal organ failure or broken bones, and this is all PlayedForLaughs.
* MiniGameCredits: Taking a page out of ''Devil May Cry'', the ending of Onechanbara Z has Kagura and Saaya face off Aya and Saki for the last time. This time however, you are invulnerable while they aren't, to [[NintendoHard give you a chance]].
