** Trying to cheat in both games especially by using any explicit tools that allows to cheat the game such as increasing the number of medals and sorties, the development team will make your account get suspended and cannot be recovered again once if you get caught doing this behavior which can be found in the rules.

** Most of the end bosses in Extra Ops from ''Attack'' (which excludes Toschka Dalanue and Big John).
* AirborneMook: Several of them. Of note is that some can only attack once (or a few times) before leaving the battlefield, but can fly over most enemy forces without being attacked. However, later updates include air units that don't leave the map after attacking, making them quite a threat.

** Both Hunter Walkers in ''Defense'' and ''Attack'' are normally grounded units, but its special ability allows it to CeilingCling and start dropping eyeball bombs in a manner similar to General Morden's Hi-Do special, though the bomb can be blocked from hitting the base if it hits a large unit. The golden version becomes this too, but instead of dropping eyeball bombs in a manner similar to the Hi-Do, it spams eyeball bombs when it's over an enemy.

* AlwaysAccurateAttack: Tetsuyuki sometimes fires a laser that hits the entire field, player base included.
** Morden's special is to summon the Hi-Do to drop bombs everywhere. The Hi-Do cannot be damaged at all, and it will drop at least one bomb on the enemy base, making it guaranteed to do damage. In Attack, this ability is nerfed somewhat.

** In Metal Slug Attack, this can get somewhat excessive once you 1) Acquire the skills that allow the main characters to keep their weapons after using them and 2) Field many of the main characters at once.

* AttackAttackAttack: All units will advance forward and exchange fire with enemies until they are killed. The Reload Support in ''Attack'' automatically reduces all units' cooldown to zero, allowing them to perform their special attacks immediately.
* AwesomeButImpractical: Zombie Marco's powerful and far-reaching blood vomit jet takes a long time to charge up, especially after being used once. Meanwhile he fights with a gun much weaker than normal Marco's and gets face-to-face with enemies despite being a gun user. And upon being hit enough to be knocked down, he takes far too long to stand up.

* BeachEpisode: The Pirates Attack event in ''Attack'', where Big Shee and a crew of pirates interrupt Eri and Fio's vacation. The girls are dressed in bikinis, and Eri and Fio use the Big versions of the Laser and Rocket Launcher respectively.
** Also, the Everlasting Summer Another Story.
* BigBad: Morden actually fights on an alien tank without being betrayed this time. The Mars People receive more focus in the last set of bonus levels. While not much of the Amadeus Syndicate is seen in the game, an expansion later added a bunch of units and some levels from the Ptolemaic Army, and later some units from the Venusians too.

* BoringButPractical: The Rebel Rifleman has a bit less HP than the basic soldier, but is still cheap at 60 AP and shoots from afar while protected by tougher units. The Bikers cost 90 AP but have 1000 HP at level 20 and move faster, while otherwise acting just like the riflemen and complementing them well.

** It is heavily implied to be this in ''Attack'', as well as requiring 2600 medals for a 10 medal mystery crank in hopes to get a better unit just to win. Pre-acquisition units can also be this, but instead of paying for it with medals, a player must pay ''$100'' for 110 parts for that particular unit (that means a total of ''$300'' to platinum ranking of said unit) as well as an exclusive gold bordered avatar that come with it. Thankfully, these pre-acquisition units will eventually become obtainable via medal crank, so if you want a powerful pre-acquisition by spending medals instead of cash, you just have to wait.
* TheBusCameBack: Enemies and characters that showed up in one game return for ''Defense'' and ''Attack''. More notable in ''Attack'', the Ptolemaic Army and Amadeus Syndicate are given more attention than what they had in their home games.

** At first, the level cap for both units and their skills in ''Attack'' is 10, then it's whatever level the player has up to Level 50.
* CatGirl: Cat/Lovely Mummies. The Pharaoh has a couple of them attending him on his War-Dias.
** Leona goes as one for Halloween.
* ChargedAttack: Most units can use a special move by spending a meter that fills over time. Oddly, few CPU characters use their special move.
** In World 3, however, CPU characters begin to use their special moves (Soldiers will toss grenades, tanks will fire salvos of three shots, etc.)

** In the Extra Ops, certain Hell missions will spam a butt-ton of units (to the point of seeing a visual streak) who immediately start using their special attacks. This commonly occurs when the enemy's base is in critical levels or a certain amount of units reached the enemy's base.

* DeathFromAbove: The Parachute Truck. It fires a bunch of bombs into the air that rain down and pierce enemies until they hit the ground. In ''Attack'', certain air units will apply a suicide attack once they've been destroyed.

* DummiedOut: Inverted. Unused animations present in the main series become used in ''Defense'' and ''Attack'', such as Abul Abbas' attacks.

* EnemyCivilWar: Ptolomaic Another Story 5 ends with roughly half the Ptolomaic characters turning on Ptolomaios.

* EverythingsDeaderWithZombies: The zombie enemies from ''Metal Slug 3'' are present. This includes Zombie Marco, who can vomit a danguerous jet of blood.

* [[EvolvingCredits Evolving Title Screen]]: Clearing World 1 makes a grieving woman appear on the title screen. Clearing World 2 makes a UFO fly by in the background. Clearing World 3 adds destroyed tanks to the lower-right side.
** The original title screen in ''Metal Slug Attack'' has replaced with the character illustrations of Yoshino, Dragunov, a Martian, Marco, General Morden, Abigail, and the Professor to mark the anniversary of the series.

** ''Attack'''s Extra Ops missions tend to have their own mini-plots, although sometimes (that is most of version 2.0's) it is nothing more than: Here's the boss, here's the pre-acquisition unit, boss is defeated, Mission Complete.
** Averted with the release of Another Story, where characters from one faction of the game's five will go through a set of story-driven battles, story being varied based on faction. [[TheBusCameBack It's also a way of being able to own past boss characters that were only available in Extra Ops.]]

* GlassCannon: The HP of the player's base isn't such an important stat to upgrade first because if a decent group of units reaches a base at all, it will most likely be done for because defending units won't have time to charge their special moves to do useful damage and can't even cover their base's hitbox.

Their standard attack is above average for an infantry unit while their special attack has a ridiculous range and deals even more damage. All of this combines into a very effective shock trooper.

** ''Metal Slug Attack'' adds two more limit breaks. The Recovery Support refills all units HP and their production reload automatically goes to zero. The Reload Support automatically changes all units' cooldown timers to zero, allowing their to use their Special Attacks without waiting.

** Instead of dying like other pilots, when the Protogunner is destroyed, Ralf dismounts it and continues the fight on foot. He's just that tough. ''Attack'' however swaps him with Tarma with the notion of avoiding a free Ralf. This trait is instead given to Dragunov.

* MsFanservice: Most of the new female units, including some of the regular female cast.

* TheNecromancer: Cat and Lovely mummies summon a trio of regular mummies, who each make one attack and dissolve into sand.

** Morden's special in ''Attack'' previously can damage enemy's base with the invincible summoned Hi-Do's. It is so popular with staller decks that the dev team removed its ability to damage bases.
* NoEnding: Beating the final mission in either Standard or Elite mode in ''Attack'' will just send you back to the map screen. The Extra Ops averts this trope, although certain events (usually the ranked ones) will not trigger the ending until the event has concluded.
* NoFairCheating: Trying to cheat in both games especially by using any explicit tools that allows to cheat the game such as increasing the number of medals and sorties, the development team will make your account get suspended and cannot be recovered again once if you get caught doing this behavior which can be found in the rules.

The Extra Ops averts this by giving out explanations as to why the event is occurring.

* OriginalGeneration:
** Eris makes her first appearance in ''Defense'' in the Relief Supplies Menu and the [=POW=] List. She hosts the Build Up section in ''Attack'' and gives her very own sprites.
** Starting with the Mummy's Event in ''Attack'', some events would include units never seen in other games such as Pharaoh's Arc (the mummys' leader) and several new commanders for all factions.
* PaletteSwap:
** Issenmantaro serves as this for Hyakutaro, but more focused on close-quarters combat. The Elite Arabian Soldier serves as this for Abul Abbas; in ''Defense'', the Elite Arabian Soldier has his special attack changed to a charging strike, while in ''Attack'' it has changed to producing shadowy clones of himself. The Jupiter King MKII serves this as well for the original with its laser attack being replaced to [[MacrossMissileMassacre missile]].
** In ''Attack'', El Dorado controls a flying Slug Armor that can shoot energy beams, and it has a similar coloration to that of Iron Man's. Slug Armors that are colored on the basis of Kyo and Iori (of the ''King of Fighters'') also appear, both having different ways of attacking.
** The Amadeus Corporal in ''Attack'', who wields a machine gun as his normal and special attack, wears purple uniforms rather than the dark blue uniforms from ''Metal Slug 4''. This was probably to avoid confusion from the Regular Soldier, who wears a blue uniform.
** A trend by the end of the first year of ''Attack's'' release, units of the Extra-Ops are new recolors of either previous bosses or units.

* RedIsViolent: Crazy Ralf is a red skinned Ralf who loses his cool (and his Flame Shot) and starts punching the hell out of everyone. It turns into a trend following the release of units such as [[ActionDuo MS-Alice (Marco)]] (Marco's only red because he [[FireBreathingDiner accidentally ingested a hot pepper]]) and Wrath versions of Rebel Soldiers that can be dropped from Attack's [[ExcusePlot Another Story Mode]].

* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: Most "Supply" characters (Sisilia, Rapid, the Aikawa sisters) will run away when their HP is depleted instead of dying. Caroline will also leave if her drone is destroyed first.

* ShadesOfGray: The "Another Story" and "Extra Ops" stories go a long way towards humanizing the enemy forces.

* SoLastSeason: Happens often especially when new and very powerful units come out, being able to counter or eclipse other units' performance. ''Attack'' balances this somewhat, with early units having skills to buff out themselves or their teammates.

* StoneWall: Units that have tons of HP but have little attack power on their own, such as the Giant Caterpillar and the Mars Mecha. They are essential for protecting your more powerful units from harm so that they can deal more damage before they get destroyed. The Ohumein-Congas and the Giant Caterpillar are notable for having a special attack that brings them directly to the front of your attack force, shielding the rest of your units from attacks. Donald Morden can also be used to stone wall (albeit a very expensive one), simply for having the highest HP among all units.

* {{Synchronization}}: Caroline controls a miniature version of a plane boss from ''Metal Slug 5'' and both her and the plane have separate HP. If Caroline dies first, then the plane will crash at the unit who killed her. If the ''plane'' dies first, then it'll crash to whoever destroyed it, and Caroline will [[ScrewThisImOuttaHere simply walk away in anger]].

The Rebel Rifleman is a more useful unit for this strategy, as explained above.

''Metal Slug Defense'' is a mobile game released rather suddenly by SNK in 2014. As made apparent by the title, it is a TowerDefense game set on the ''VideoGame/MetalSlug'' universe. Players spend a constantly filling meter on various characters and enemies from the series, which then march foward in hopes of overwhelming and destroying the opposite base. The many different human, machine and monster units have a basic attack, as well as unique charged moves which sometimes require good timing to be used correctly.
