* {{Leitmotif}}: As tradition, each character comes with a theme associated with them. Unlike previous games, the music does not switch out when a fighter is defeated; it currently seems to be reserved for when an Infinity Storm is triggered. It is worth noting that while the Capcom side does retain many of the usual themes associated with them, none of the returning Marvel characters reuse any of their old themes. Each of the fights in story mode use these themes or have specific ones for certain battles, such as reusing the X vs. Zero theme from ''VideoGame/MegaManX5'' when X and Rocket fight Zero.

* StatusQuoIsGod: [[spoiler: Defied, what happens is permanent, and the worlds stay fused.]]

* DiminishingReturnsForBalance: Soul Stone's Infinity Storm works a bit differently from others - if you try activating it a second time with your partner being dead, the dead partner will be revived with [[OneHitPointWonder only 1 HP]] that can't be regenerated (except with its Infinity Surge). Also, its Infinity Storm stops the moment one of your characters dies, unlike other stones.

* FlashStep: The Time Stone allows the user to dash quickly across the screen, phasing through the opponent (and their attacks) in the process.

* HomeBase: The Avengers Tower is stated to be one for our heroes. The story trailer implied that Ultron-Sigma will eventually [[AllYourBaseAreBelongToUs invade it.]] [[spoiler:The invasion happens when the heroes are forced to split up to pursue the four remaining Infinity Stones, leaving Spencer, Hawkeye, Dr. Light and Iron Man on watch. The group is forced to release Thanos when Ultron-Sigma arrives.]]

** As per her nature as [[HornyDevils a succubus]] and [[PowerLevels a high-ranking Darkstalker]], Morrigan's total power [[PhysicalGod surpasses a vast majority of the entire Capcom Vs Whatever franchise's cast]], but [[WillfullyWeak she chooses to make herself only as strong as she needs to be]] in order to [[BloodKnight derive]] [[SexIsViolence pleasure]] from the fight.

** [[GodOfEvil Jedah]] is such a massive threat in his home series that most of the cast aren't even able to withstand a single strike for him. Here even a humble photographer can beat him down.

* PowerGlows: The teaser trailer shows Captain Marvel powering up and the Infinity Stones creating a power aura for the characters that use them.

* SealedEvilInACan: Thanos spends some time during the game's story in 2 separate cans: one in Xgard and then in Avengers Tower. He's released midway through the story [[spoiler:when Iron Man and Spencer used up all of the tower's power to deliver a crippling attack on the invading Ultron Sigma, causing Thanos' electronic cell to turn off]].
* SequelHook: [[spoiler: Ultron-Sigma is defeated and Jedah's scheme is stopped but he's far from beaten and set to try again with Lady Death. What's more with the reality gem fractured, there's no way to undo the merged damage of the now fused Marvel and Capcom world, meaning at the current it's stuck in a permanent state. If that wasn't bad enough Thanos managed to get his hands on the ''Satsui no Hadou'' and seeks revenge on Jedah and Death for playing him]].

Sigma and Ultron meet and decide that the only way to rid both of their worlds of organic life is to merge said worlds, and themselves, using the Reality and Space stones. 88 days after the convergence, Captain America and X gather their respective fighters and set off on a deadly mission, liberate Thanos and use his help to recover the remaining four stones and use them to stop Ultron Sigma for good. Of course, Thanos has his own plans, as does Jedah, and several others...

* DownloadableContent: Announced so far are 6 characters - Sigma, Black Panther, Monster Hunter, Venom, Winter Soldier, and Black Widow - and 4 alternate costumes: Evil Ryu, gladiator costumes for Thor and Hulk, and X's armor from ''VideoGame/MegaManXCommandMission''.

* FightingYourFriend: Captain America and Dante come to blows with Iron Man and Chun-Li over releasing Thanos. Later in the story, X and Rocket have to fight Zero, who was brainwashed by the Grandmaster. This is later followed by a symbiote-infected Spider-Man being forced to fight against Frank and Haggar.

* GameplayAndStorySegregation: Jedah later points out to Dante that the Soul Stone [[spoiler:can only be used by "a noble soul"]], a fact that he later exploited [[spoiler:against Ultron Sigma because they lack a soul to begin with]]. This has no bearing in the gameplay where everyone can use the Soul Stone with no ill effects.

* MythologyGag:
** Rocket quips when using his Hyper Combo attack with Groot: "[[Film/GuardiansOfTheGalaxy Ain't nothing like me, 'cept me!]]"
** The Reality Stone's Infinity Storm causes random attacks to occur out of nowhere, similar to how it acted in ''VideoGame/MarvelSuperHeroes''. For the most part, many of the Stones' effects (either normally or in a Storm) are reminiscent of how they acted as gems back in ''Marvel Super Heroes'', and to bring it further, many of the characters who had appeared in that game[[note]]Spider-Man, Captain America, Hulk, Iron Man and Thanos[[/note]] reuse the pose used when activating an Infinity Gem there for using an Infinity Storm here.
** When X uses an Infinity Storm, he exclaims "For the [[VideoGame/MarvelVsCapcom3 fate of two worlds!]]"
** In the first gameplay trailer, it's rather appropriate that Ryu, a character from the Capcom side, announces his usage of the VideoGame/PowerStone when demonstrating an Infinity Gem.
** Thor's "Warrior Thor" DLC outfit is heavily influenced by his look from ''Film/ThorRagnarok'', especially with the short hair and beard.
** Likewise, the Hulk's "Gladiator Hulk" DLC outfit is a nod to his look from ''ComicBook/PlanetHulk'' and the aforementioned ''Ragnarok'' movie.
** The Space Stone can trap enemies in a large blue box that looks a lot like the Cosmic Cube, a nod to the Space Stone and Cube being [[CompositeCharacter one and the same]] in the MCU.
** One of Thanos' pre-battle quotes is "[[Film/AvengersAgeOfUltron Fine, I'll do it myself.]]"
** One of Ryu's pre-battle quotes when fighting X has him mention X's potential to use the Hadou, a reference to the original ''VideoGame/MegaManX1'' where the Hadouken is available as a secret unlockable weapon. X's taunt also has him perform the gesture for the Hadouken[[note]]Performing the taunt with the [[SuperMode Armor of Light]] equipped will actually result in him firing a Hadouken that does 100 damage, albeit at point-blank range[[/note]].
** One of Captain America's taunt quotes is "[[Film/CaptainAmericaTheFirstAvenger I could do]] [[Film/CaptainAmericaCivilWar this all day.]]" [[note]]The only difference being that he used 'can' instead of 'could' in these two movies.[[/note]]
** One of Spider-Man's taunt quotes is "Can you [[WesternAnimation/SpiderMan1967 do whatever a spider can?]]"
** If Spider-Man is tagged in while the player is using Iron Man, he'll quip out "[[Film/CaptainAmericaCivilWar Underoos]]!"
** Spider-Man's new Level 3 super has him dodge several of Green Goblin's pumpkin bombs before using his webs to redirect them at his opponent, in reference to a similar scene from [[Film/SpiderMan the first Sam Raimi movie.]]
** Spider-Man's appearance when taken over by the symbiote resembles his look in [[Film/SpiderMan3 the third Sam Raimi movie]].
** The violins which play during the opening of his new theme call to mind his {{Leitmotif}} from, once again, the Raimi movies.
** Many of the alternate colors, especially for the Marvel heroes, are shout-outs towards various eras. These include:
*** Two of the Hulk's alternate colors make him look like the Gray Hulk/Joe Fixit and the original ComicBook/RedHulk.
*** One of Iron Man's colors is black and gold, making him look like his ComicBook/MarvelNOW look.
*** One of Captain America's colors is green and gold, ComicBook/{{HYDRA}} colors, which means players can finally knock HYDRA Cap on his ass for what he did in ''ComicBook/SecretEmpire''!
*** One of X's colors is dark blue with yellow highlights, just like "[[https://www.fightersgeneration.com/nx/chars/badboxart-megaman.jpg Bad Box Art]] [[VideoGame/MegaMan1 Mega Man]]".
** The final boss appears to be [[spoiler:Ultron fused with the remnants of the giant body Sigma used in ''[[VideoGame/MegaManX5 Mega Man X5]]'', primarily using the giant rocket-propelled hands and disembodied head.]]
** In the Sigma's Lab stage, there's a device that looks somewhat like [[Comicbook/MegaMan the Unity Engine]] - the device that Sigma uses to merge the worlds in the ''Worlds Unite'' plot.

* BadassNormal: In a roster consisting of super soldiers, mutants, demonic creatures, gods, robots, and [[FantasyKitchenSink everything else not normal]], there are four characters who stand out for fitting in this category. Chris Redfield, Frank West, and Mike Haggar on the Capcom side are respectively an international cop, a photographer who just happens to fight zombies, and a wrestler-turned-mayor. On the Marvel side, there's Hawkeye, whose "superpower" is being a damn good archer. All of them using their sheer skills and training to keep up with everyone else's more fantastical abilities. Even so, [[EmpoweredBadassNormal can use an Infinity Stone]] to help.

* BoringButPractical:
** The Soul Stone. Its effects are a lot more mundane than those of its brethren... but since it can LifeDrain your opponent and/or AutoRevive your fallen ally, "Practical" is an understatement.

** Infinity Stone-wise, the Soul Stone. It's the least elaborate and flashy among its brethren... but since it can LifeDrain your opponent and/or AutoRevive your fallen ally, "Practical" is an understatement.

* ComicBook/{{Ultron}}-[[VideoGame/MegaManX Sigma]]

** The Mind Stone generates hyper meter as long as the Infinity Storm is active.
** The Soul Stone revives your teammate and lets you control both characters for the duration of the Infinity Storm.

** When Thor is corrupted by the Sigma virus, he still wields Mjolnir when fighting him.

** Thanos, [[SuperStrength Hulk]], [[PowerOfTheStorm Thor]][[note]]in many versions, Thor [[WillfullyWeak purposefully limits himself]] to a small fraction of his power[[/note]], Dormammu, and [[AIIsACrapshoot Ultron]] normally could withstand and defeat most of the cast handily with their strength alone.

* PoweredArmor: Iron Man, of course. X gets in on this, summoning [[VideoGame/MegaManX1 the First Armor]]

** Zig-zagged with the returning Marvel characters. Some such as Captain America, Hawkeye, and Rocket Raccoon have had their models updated to resemble their appearances in the recent comics and movies. Others, such as Thor and Hulk, remain visibly unchanged.
