''J Stars Victory VS'' is an arena brawler akin to ''AnarchyReigns'' and ''GundamExtremeVS'' and is a spiritual successor to ''JumpSuperStars''. The game was created to celebrate the 45th anniversary of ''Weekly ShonenJump'' and originally was codenamed ''Project Versus J''. The game features 2-on-2 player combat where the player teams up with a friend or the computer to fight against an opposing team. Each team also has a third slot left for summoning a support character.

A feature unique to ''JStarsVictoryVS'' it's battle system. Each team has a three-part "WIN Gauge" that fills as you defeat opponents (defeated players will respawn after a while). Each character has finishing moves that get more powerful as the bar fills. The WIN Gauge is still shared with the team, so only one character at a time can use a finisher until the bar fills again. If the bar fills up completely, however, both characters on your team can perform an Ultimate Finisher that automatically wins you the match if it works, but it can be reversed back onto you in a clash sequence. There are also chargable power attacks and area-of-effect attacks. Also, characters have specific strengths and weaknesses. For instance, Luffy is strong against electrical attacks but grows weak in water.
