* MerryInMinorKey: In ''Figment 2: Creed Valley:''
** Double subverted with "[[https://youtu.be/cBTgCJvvsQA?si=kjdy7AvSlNCnzJh3 Dance Like an Idiot]]," the Jester's song, which they sing snippets of throughout the game. It's in A Minor, and the lyrics are all about letting go of logic and giving in to craziness. Since the Jester initially seems to be evil, the minor key definitely helps their song sound like a VillainSong. However, [[spoiler:they're GoodAllAlong, and they just want to restore a sense of childish innocence and fun to the Mind]].
** Zig-zagged in "[[https://youtu.be/baa8ujB9bzM?si=qjlvmAVo4Y6nfZCc The Dance-off, Pt. 4]]," which is sung near the end after [[spoiler:Dusty finally befriends and makes peace with the Jester]]. The verses are in a major key, but the chorus is reprised from "Dance Like an Idiot," except in B Minor and with slightly altered lyrics.

** The Jester sings one called [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zjl2-MSmbsE&list=PLPiEEwtre2ap6L5R-jEnW2wdr5Vg7Ms2X&index=6 "Dance Like an Idiot"]] about how he wants to "liberate" the mind, by [[ChaosIsEvil throwing it all into chaos]]. This version is more overtly sinister because [[spoiler:they're going through a case of ThenLetMeBeEvil]].

Moved character tropes to the Characters page.

* ArtifactMook: Fear-Of-Loss invokes Mooks from the previous bosses.

** The sequel has the [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8u5qJuhxuq4&list=PLPiEEwtre2ap6L5R-jEnW2wdr5Vg7Ms2X&index=7 Discarded Opinions Song]], as before it is justified by the singers being wrong opinions.
* BigBadEnsemble: The three nightmares in the first game are all trying to overrun the Mind with fear, but none are working together. The Thief is the overarching threat though.

opinions.

* ColorMotif: Each of the nightmares in the first game is primarily [[DarkIsEvil black]] along with another color. Each nightmare's color combination fits their personality:
** The Plague: Black and {{Red|AndBlackAndEvilAllOver}}. This fits his violent, temperamental personality.
** The Spider Queen: Black and [[GrayscaleOfEvil White]]. This fits her calmer, more menacing personality.
** The Fear-Of-Loss: Black and {{Purple|IsPowerful}}. This is fitting for how he's the most dangerous nightmare.
* CreepyHighPitchedVoice: The Plague has a screechy, sickly high-pitched voice.
* DanceBattler: Downplayed with The Plague who tapdances while singing his villain song and [[MadBomber throwing beakers of poison at you.]] The Jester in the sequel also dances during combat.

* EvilCannotComprehendGood: Fear-Of-Loss again; being what he is, he can't imagine anyone coping with losing something or someone they care about, such as Piper appreciating things while they last. His attempt at a SadisticChoice [[spoiler:after you win the final showdown]] fails because he doesn't expect Dusty to [[spoiler:willingly sacrifice his [[MacGuffin scrapbook]]]].

* FrenchJerk: The Spider Queen has a French accent.

* KillItWithWater: How the Plague dies.
* LaughablyEvil: The Plague is the most humorous of the evil nightmares, between his [[NoIndoorVoice over-the-top voice acting]], constant anger, dancing to his own VillainSong, and more. He's also the source of the game's only ToiletHumor moments, if you're into that too.
* LeaningOnTheFourthWall: One of the lines in the Discarded Opinions Song is [[TakeThat "videogames can't be musicals"]]
* MadBomber: The Plague fights by throwing vials of disease everywhere.
* MalevolentMaskedMan: Each nightmare in the first game has a masklike face. When the Plague and the Spider Queen die, their masks are left behind, but the Fear-Of-Loss disappears entirely.

musicals"]]

* MultipleHeadCase: The Jester has two heads that act like a comedy duo.

* NoIndoorVoice: The Plague never speaks below a shrill scream.
* NoSongForTheWicked: Inverted. Dusty, the protagonist, is the only major character who does not sing. [[spoiler: He finally gets a chance to shine in the sequel, and he's pretty good.]]
* PlagueDoctor: Invoked. The Plague, a nightmare representing the fear of disease, has a face resembling a plague doctor mask.

* ResurrectiveImmortality: The Jester can come back even after being destroyed, Piper notes that it shouldn't be possible. [[spoiler: This is because he's a part of the mind, like Dusty, and can't simply be destroyed.]]
* RottenRockAndRoll: Fear-Of-Loss's VillainSong uses this genre, late in the game he uses the front bumper and signal lights from the crashed car in the BlackBugRoom as a stage and special effects lightshow respectively and during the last part of his boss fight he [[MetalScream metal screams instead of talking.]]
* ScrapHeapHero: Dusty at the start of the first game, he's been out of work for so long he's out of shape and is fairly cynical, he gets better later.

* StrawNihilist: The Fear-Of-Loss is a cackling maniac who believes that nothing in life matters and tries to get the protagonist, Dusty to give in to despair. Justified because the Fear-of-Loss is a nightmare in a man's MentalWorld, representing the fear and despair that the man feels from [[spoiler:falling into a coma due to a car crash]].
* SubvertedRhymeEveryOccasion: The Plague does this in his song to avoid saying "shit".
-->Your blood is boiling and your headache split\\
You'll lose your lunch and smell like... eh, something nasty!

* TrrrillingRrrs: The Plague trills his Rs a few times, fitting for how comically sinister he is:
-->''Drrrrenched in sweat, and with a scream / you wake up frrrom my fever dream!''

* UnusualEuphemism: Done via a {{pun}}. At one point, the Plague says "What the health?!" It's a pun on "hell", and the word choice is fitting as something the embodiment of disease would hate.

* WithFriendsLikeThese: Twice during the sequel Dusty manages to get on the Jesters good side, unfortunately the Jesters idea of having fun with Dusty still involves summoning enemies and [[BulletHell shooting fireworks everywhere]] regardless, Dusty even lampshades it during the finale.
--> ''The way you celebrate is kinda killing me.''
