** In the Plus update for the mod, [[spoiler:you can unlock costumes for Boyfriend, Girlfriend and the other girls to use during the post-prologue songs, such as ones based around the Festival covers, and even extending to variations and alternate versions of Boyfriend such as [[VideoGame/FridayNightFunkinMinus the Minus Boyfriend trio]], [[VideoGame/FridayNightFunkinSoft Benjamin]] and [[VideoGame/HoloFunk Aloe]].]] A full list can be seen under the [[UnlockableContent/DokiDokiTakeover Unlockable Content page of this article]]. [[spoiler:The protagonist originally lacked a Festival costume due to the opponent of the original version of "Titular" being a literal stick figure with no visible clothing. However, the Final Farewell update manages to get around this by adding an outfit ''based'' on Henry instead of a direct cosplay.]]

* AdaptationalBadass: Natsuki in ''Doki Doki Takeover!'', and by extension ''Doki Doki Literature Club!'', has never had any powers nor any fighting capability. In "My Streets", she looks to be no stranger to a scrap and even has new [[PlayingWithFire fire powers]] to boot.

** The mod as a whole also has a much broader change relating to VisualNovel/DokiDokiLiteratureClub's metafictional elements: in ''Takeover!'', ''Doki Doki Literature Club!'' is a FictionalVideoGame within the VideoGame/FridayNightFunkin universe much like ''Hating Simulator''. At first, the only effect this really has is that [[FourthWallObserver Monika]] never [[AddressingThePlayer speaks to you directly]] like in her original game, as the "player" she longs for is instead an unseen character InUniverse; [[spoiler:a similar case occurs with Sayori, who remarks on how Boyfriend and Girlfriend "broke through to the digital world from the real world"]]. However, it becomes much more relevant later in the mod, as the fantastical nature of the ''Friday Night Funkin''' world means that [[spoiler:Boyfriend and Girlfriend are actually able to bring the Literature Club members out of the game, giving them a much happier ending compared to the original ''Doki Doki Literature Club!'']].

* BreakTheCutie: In the Bad Ending, Boyfriend has to face off against Sayori, Yuri, and Natsuki at their worst as reality breaks down around them, [[OOCIsSeriousBusiness clearly struggling and not looking very confident doing so]]. [[spoiler:Seeing his beloved drop dead halfway through "HOME" causing him to go absolutely ''mental'', and he dies after the song's conclusion futilely holding Girlfriend.]]

** The Plus update, however, [[spoiler:introduces "Libitina" as the mod's true final song, unlocked after completing every other song aside from "Epiphany" and its "WITH LYRICS" variation. While there are no Eyes of Markov this time around, every note in the song is on the player's side of the screen, akin to the likes of [[VideoGame/FridayNightFunkinChaosNightmare "Phantasm"]], and the song is really fast-paced until the climax, meaning the player must be on their toes to get through this final hurdle to OneHundredPercentCompletion of the mod.]]

* HeelRealization: [[spoiler:After losing to Boyfriend in "Your Demise", Monika realizes that [[HistoryRepeats once again]], she's interfering with someone else's love life, and promptly restores ''Hating Simulator'' to the way it was before, along with bringing back Girlfriend, before leaving.]]

* IgnoredEpiphany: Monika seemingly [[spoiler:[[AesopAmnesia learned nothing]] from the events of her original game and once again tries to erase the protagonist’s love interest, along with any other obstacles preventing her from having him all to herself.]] However, she [[HeelRealization quickly realizes what she's doing]] and [[spoiler:restores everything back to the way it was.]]

* OddFriendship: Sayori is canonically friends with Zipper, which is shown through the Side Story song from the Plus update "Constricted". One is a mysterious CartoonCreature in a straitjacket who can only communicate through screams, the other is a cheerful schoolgirl, and yet they managed to bond to the point where Zipper had been happily following Sayori around, leading her to introduce him to the rest of the literature club.

* OOCIsSeriousBusiness:
** When Monika [[spoiler:deletes everything in ''Hating Simulator'' to keep singing with Boyfriend, including Girlfriend,]] Boyfriend gets ''pissed'' and possesses angry sprites for "Your Demise".
** In the Bad Ending mod, Boyfriend is struggling to sing and looks genuinely worried and distraught, with [[HiddenEyes a light shadow over his eyes that gets worse in his down pose]].

* PlayingWithFire: In the D-Sides one-shot mod, Natsuki has this in spades with her attacks, utilising special notes that boost each side's HP by a good amount.

* SanitySlippage: Halfway through "Obsession", [[spoiler:the music [[LettingTheAirOutOfTheBand slows to a crawl]] and the screen has a FadeToBlack. When it fades back in, Yuri is grabbing her chest and staring down at Boyfriend with a malicious SlasherSmile while breathing heavily.]]

* TearsOfJoy: [[spoiler:Monika, after BF and GF managed to bring her and her friends to their world, can only cry with overwhelmed emotions as she hugs them.]]
* TheUnfought: Although MC appears in the Festival Week to ask Boyfriend for his help, he never sings a single song, at least not in the original update. The Plus update subverts this by giving him his own songs to sing.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom:
** As the ending reveals, Boyfriend [[spoiler:stole Senpai's mic so Monika could sing.]] He had no idea it would lead to [[spoiler:all of ''Hating Simulator'', plus Girlfriend, getting erased by Monika.]]
** Senpai didn't know it at the time, but [[spoiler:he shouldn't have been [[MuggingAMonster so on-the-nose about wanting to get his microphone back]],]] since he's part of the catalyst [[spoiler:that leads to almost everything getting erased.]]
** This gets flipped on its head in [[spoiler:the Side Story "Wilted", taking place after the main story. Monika inadvertently taught Senpai how to access the code of his world when she escaped back to hers, letting him break free of Hating Simulator and [[SealedInsideAPersonShapedCan separate Spirit from his being]]. [[NiceJobBreakingItHero And with Boyfriend and Girlfriend creating a way for the Literature Club to enter the real world]], [[SequelHook Spirit seemingly has plans to get his revenge on the Dearests...]]]]
* {{Tsundere}}: Natsuki, just as she was in her home game. She even claims to be the best at subverting expectations.
* TheVoiceless: Girlfriend never speaks, only giving out "happy gestures".

* YouCantGoHomeAgain: The game's events are set in motion because Monika is trapped in ''Hating Simulator'' with no way back to ''Doki Doki Literature Club!'' (and no real desire to return after what she did). [[spoiler:Or so she thinks. She is very much able to go back; she just had no reason to ''try'' until Boyfriend and Girlfriend needed rescuing. Played straight in the Bad Ending, where Monika is legitimately unable to find a way back into the game.]]
