* Kevin McAllister vs Jigsaw

Jigsaw

Advantages:

* has killed a crap ton of people
* regularly evades FBI and Swat Teams
* has access to a number of lethal weaponry, chemicals, devices
* more complicated traps than Kevin
* seemingly higher pain tolerance
* old enough to drive, buy beer, and own a firearm license
* has collaborators and crafts multiple BatmanGambit XanatosGambitPileup-esque schemes
* good at taking advantage of human selfishness and greed
* operates on a moral code, but isn't afraid to leave victims HoistByHisOwnPetard

Disadvantages:

* has a brain tumor
* would probably get agitated by Kevin
* only targets people he believes deserve it, or who have personally wronged him
* the police are already looking for him

Kevin

Advantages:

* is a small child that the FBI is not currently hunting
* good at making his traps undetectable until the poor bastard has walked right in it
* manipulates several hotel staff in Home Alone 2 with a loud television
* weaponizes a good amount of house and hotel supplies into an effective home defense system
* higher chance of not being prosecuted due to his age
* faster on foot
* gains an extra life if he eats a box of pizza (videogame only)
* outwits several adults in spite of his young age
* the worst thing he's ever done is defend himself from burglars
* similar level of creativity to Jigsaw with much smaller window of preparation

Disadvantages:

* bit of a spoiled brat
* not old enough to buy a gun or have any collaborators
* young and gullible enough to buy into bogus serial killer stories
* little to no access to any expensive chemicals or devices outside of his own home
* doesn't have the body count that Jigsaw does

* Kevin hasn't done anything worthy of Jigsaw's most lethal or unfair traps. Putting the kid in the reverse bear trap, or the shotgun collar, would be against Jigsaw's code of ethics.
** There always has to be an element of cruel irony to Jigsaw's traps. Kevin's trap-making has no such limitation. Kevin will flat out set a doorknob on fire, shoot you in the groin with a BB gun, or bash your skull in with a pain can no questions asked
* Kevin's fear of lesser serial killers like Old Man Marley would probably make him acutely aware of big-timers like the Jigsaw Killer - it would take him less time to know about Jigsaw than it would take for John to do any research on the McAllister household
** Jigsaw would likely target Kevin's parents before he'd target Kevin
* Jigsaw does have collaborators who would probably be less morally restrained - Hoffman in particular slaughtered a police station full of cops. But not only did Hoffman focus more on protecting himself than following Jigsaw's code, giving Jigsaw access to 3-4 helpers wouldn't be fair to Kevin.
** Restricting Young, Hoffman, and Gordon from John would severely cripple his traps - which are vastly superior to Kevin's in their scale and construction. The most we've known John to do all by himself would be the traps put together in the latest film, Jigsaw, which took place before he had Amanda Young helping him, and it's unknown to what degree Nelson was helping him. Simply put, if we exclude his helpers then John's ability to create traps is greatly stunted.
*** Kevin's traps are literally homemade, making him the better inventor.
* Kevin is more physically fit and completes his traps in a smaller timespan.

All in all, Kevin takes the victory. I guess Kramer shouldn't have been left home alone without Life Alert.

The winner is .

quoteblockIf the first game had that problem of 'choices don't matter', why would that suddenly not or be any less of a problem in a prequel? Arguably, it'd be worse/quoteblock

Well first I should correct myself in that I actually don't see it as a problem. Anybody who picks up a video game that promises "free choice" and expects 6 different, fully-animated, voiced, totally separate endings that are each equally valid is bound to be disappointed every time (cough) NoMansSky (cough). As I rarely buy into the illusion of free choice in video games I'm never really disappointed by a "lack" of it.

quoteblockNot only do we have the basic variation of the problem, we know from the outset of the original that we can't change anything./quoteblock

But you know that going into any prequel. A prequel serves to fill in gaps and thus choices will almost never matter due to the need to link up with the story that follows the prequel. The need for significant choice is practically eliminated. That doesn't mean that there shouldn't still be interesting choices or character development, but if those choices did change the story in a way that differs from the sequel then it's not really a prequel at all, it's a spin-off, a parallel universe.

If anything I'd say this might be better-received because it's honest from the get-go - if you're playing a prequel you're accepting the fact that you are playing through past events and that certain events are leading to the events of the sequel. But that doesn't have to be a negative - the little micro-choices in LIS like Max watering her plant, ordering one meal or another, kissing Chloe, none of those change the outcome, but they do change how we experience the narrative and Max's character. That's actually enough for me as a player.

If the game is telling you from the outset "this is a prequel" then any criticism about "not being able to change everything" is kind of invalid.

quoteblock I don't know how many ways you can really grip the audience in this small of a setting. Or how many plot twists or The Reveal moments you could throw at us./quoteblock

A prequel doesn't really need a TheReveal moment, but even it it did, there's a lot of things in Arcadia Bay that could be elaborated on from Chloe or Rachel's perspective.

quoteblockThe only thing I can possibly think of doing is giving Rachel the time powers and doing whatever the hell they want as continuity./quoteblock

The thing that grabbed me when I got to Episodes 4 and 5 was how everyone expected some big supernatural answer, only for TheUntwist to happen, emphasizing that the important parts of the story were Max and Chloe's relationship and Max growing as a person, etc. With that in mind I see nothing wrong with telling a simpler story without much in the way of twists. Rachel doesn't need to gain powers, the story doesn't need to change in any significant way, and given there's years between when Max left and came back, and months between Rachel disappearing and Max coming back, there's a wealth of character development to draw from.

Heck, doing a simpler story without a time travel gimmick or a litany of plot twists, just focusing on character interaction and development I'd say plays to Dontnod's strengths.

DC Wastelands – a rip-off from Marvel Zombies

A version of Earth exists: where more than two-thirds of Earth’s population has become flesh-devouring creatures, and the metahuman community fights desperately to survive.

The poor, unfortunate souls:
* Lois Lane *
* Arsenal *
* Red Hood *
* Robin (Damian) *
* Starfire *
* Stargirl *
* Solomon Grundy *

Antagonists:

* The Joker *
* Vandal Savage
* Amanda Waller
* Lex Luthor
* Lena Luthor
* Superboy (undead)
* Per Degaton

Survivors:

* Vixen
* Steve Trevor
* King Faraday
* Nightwing
* Green Arrow
* Raven
* Batman
* Gypsy
* Fire
* Madame Xanadu
* Big Barda
* Jason Blood
* Phantom Stranger *
* John Constantine
Undead:
* Captain Marvel
* Superman
* Wonder Woman *
* Hal Jordan
* Supergirl
* Harley Quinn *
* Beast Boy
* Cyborg
* Martian Manhunter
* Hawkwoman
* Hawkman
* Steel
* Wonder Girl *
* Boston Brand (Deadman)
* Wildcat
* Cheetah
* Mr. Miracle
* Mr. Terrific

Deceased:

* Carol Ferris
* STRIPES
* Flash
* Huntress

The story (chronologically) began with Superman being bitten by an infected Captain Marvel, though Batman (amputated to prevent infection) never found out exactly where it started.

Scenes:

• The first scene is Hal Jordan finding Abin Sur, his corpse zombified. The power ring goes to Hal in the nick of time, letting him retaliate when Abin Sur reanimates and tries to eat him. In the next scene, zombified Hal is still wielding his Power Ring. Though the ‘hunger’ initially prevented him from using the ring’s power, his cannibalistic power enabled him to use the Lantern’s power. He explains this to Lois Lane, while feeding on Carol Ferris, terrifying Lois. An arrow goes through Jordan’s face, allowing Lois to escape. Arsenal saves her life, taking her back to the bunker.

• Lois keeps a personal memoir: she was there when the coasts of Metropolis filled with dead animals. When Arthur Curry was bitten by Superman, Arthur immediately fled into the oceans, and soon the seas were painted red. Arthur fed on the unsuspecting aquatic populations of Earth, returning to shore only when he’d depopulated the sealife in a given area. Arthur was never confirmed KIA, so most keep away from the shore out of fear of him.

• Martian Manhunter shapeshifts, so that he can sneak into human gatherings and feed on the survivors in secret. He helps the survivors evade the other zombies to sustain himself.

• Superman, Hawkman, Hawkwoman, and Supergirl all left the Earth, aware that their powers let them endure space travel, and that they would be the only ones capable of feeding on distant planets and solar systems, while their brethren would be stuck on Earth.
• Lois has a nightmare: of the day Superman turned. She watched him pull a plane out of the sky and lower it into the streets, tearing the cabin apart, and begin eating the occupants.

• Lois wakes up in a bunker, far away from the Daily Planet building where she’d previously holed up. She was brought back by Arsenal, Roy Harper, who’s eked out a base in Metropolis with the help of Damian, Koriand’r, and Courtney.

• Jason, the Red Hood, remained in Gotham to deal with the zombies there and protect Gotham Academy.

• Roy tells her that they wanted to commandeer a helicopter, but they’ve been unable to move since Superboy prowls those eras.

• Superboy remained on Earth, due to being unable to fly like the rest of the Superman-family.

• The final scene will involve the Phantom Stranger being bitten. When he resurrects, he guides the zombies to the remaining human survivors.

Ideas (other stories, etc)

• Barda and her husband, Scott, Mister Miracle, were attacked early on in their suburban home. Defending their household proved easy enough, until a super-zombie attacked them. Barda fought bravely, but was bitten. Scott nursed her until her last breath, but as a last resort, used the Alpha Effect to revive her.

• Boston Brand (Deadman) can’t possess any of the undead.

• The Swamp Thing and The Green are untouched by the infection – they’re just trees, and they’ll have their own role to play when human survivors seek them out for sanctuary. The Green are waging their own battle for survival against The Rot.

• Alfred gave his life to save Damian, Stephanie Brown, and Time Drake.

• Lobo hunts down the undead Superman, Supergirl, Hawkwoman and Hawkman.

* Raven had a vision of the devastated Earth and believed her father, Trigon, responsible for it. She left the Earth before the zombie apocalypse started, though she visited Billy Batson beforehand, warning him that he would herald that apocalypse.

• Amanda Waller coerces an entirely new Suicide Squad to send them on the most suicidal mission yet: retake Washington DC from the dead. The unlucky members are Rick Flag Jr, Arthur Light, Calculator, Clock King,

Ideas (elements)

• As the undead bodies no longer contain living cells, Kryptonite won’t affect an undead Kryptonian.

• When the undead swarmed Gotham City, Joker threw Harley to them in a bid to escape. In her undead state, she’s refused to devour an entire human, driven by her intense desire to hunt down and eat the Joker. Rather than outright kill her victims, she carries a hacksaw so that she can take parts of them for sustenance.

• Wonder Woman, Wonder Girl, and Donna Troy capture weaker zombies and bring them to Paradise Island. Diana already infected the Amazons there, and consumed those that couldn’t be dealt with (or whenever she got hungry). With that done, the Amazons use their all-healing Purple Ray to transform the undead back into living beings, so that the army of Amazons can feed.

• Per Degaton and Phantom Stranger know what’s up, know the origins of the plague, and are each determined to create an escape method, for their own reasons.

• After Bizarro was bitten, Lex hastily convinced Bizarro that, since he was an undead, he had to do the opposite of what the other undead did. Bizarro was a ‘zombie’, and zombies didn’t eat the living, zombies protected the living from the undead. Bizarro, while undead, became Luthor’s protector, though Luthor questions whether Bizarro’s hunger can be channeled, even offering him regular meals of former LutherCorp employees and the Joker’s henchmen.

• Aware that Luthor had a champion, Joker sought one of his own – most of his henchmen were getting killed and eaten left and right, before Joker even got the chance to, too! But there were rumors about a local acquaintance, Solomon Grundy, who, already undead, was unaffected by the infection. Once in contact, Joker promised Grundy a cut of whatever cash Joker’s stooges could get their hands on. Grundy agreed; a super-powerful, indestructible mobster on his side, Joker knew he could stand up to big old Luthor any day of the week.

• Lex Luthor and the Joker, in-between surviving the apocalypse, launch attacks on each other whenever possible in order to steal resources.

• Steve Trevor, Amanda Waller, Pat Dugan, Michael Holt, Raymond Palmer, and Barbara Gordon commandeered Diana’s invisible plane, and are circling the globe while trying to coordinate teams, supervise containment, and control mass panic. But their efforts clearly aren’t doing much good, with the already undead masses reaching up at the plane flying over their outstretched, mutilated limbs.

• Black Flash killed each of the speedsters as soon as they were turned – their hunger dulled their senses, keeping them placid when true death came for them.

• Raymond Palmer shrunk himself, Luthor, Waller, and Oracle to microscopic size, so they could hide inside the city of Kandor.

• Diana and Cassandra returned to Themyscira quickly after being bitten, intent on devouring their Amazonian sisters before anyone else could. But Diana had an idea, and ate merely the weak and defenseless, turning the rest of the Amazons by choice. Finally, her mother, who would not give in to her and fought bravely. Diana wasn’t able to control the battle and Hipployta ended up consumed, all except for her head, which reanimated. Diana keeps her around out of pity, but assumes the role of the Amazon’s undead queen.

• After Atlantean scientists discovered the disease that infected her husband Arthur, that he was killing the world’s oceans and all aquatic life, Mera took a preemptive measure and moved a number of her people to Xebel, a separate dimension, to protect them. Mera waited for Arthur to return to Atlantis, and when he did, they engaged in a terrible battle. With tears in her eyes, Mera decapitated Arthur and left his severed head rotting at the bottom of the ocean, leaving for Xebel.

should correct myself in that I actually don't see it as a problem.

But that doesn't have to be a negative - the little micro-choices in LIS
like Blake. They've both severed all ties with her. Max watering her plant, ordering one meal or another, kissing Chloe, none of those change the outcome, but they do change how we experience the narrative and Max's character. That's actually enough for me as a player.

If the game is telling you from the outset "this is a prequel" then any criticism about "not being able to change everything" is kind of invalid.

quoteblock I don't know how many ways you can really grip the audience in this small of a setting. Or how many plot twists or

DC Wastelands – a rip-off
could be elaborated on from Marvel Zombies

A version of Earth exists: where more than two-thirds of Earth’s population has become flesh-devouring creatures, and the metahuman community fights desperately to survive.
Chloe or Rachel's perspective.

The poor, unfortunate souls:
* Lois Lane *
* Arsenal *
* Red Hood *
* Robin (Damian) *
* Starfire *
* Stargirl *
* Solomon Grundy *

Antagonists:

* The Joker *
* Vandal Savage
* Amanda Waller
* Lex Luthor
* Lena Luthor
* Superboy (undead)
* Per Degaton

Survivors:

* Vixen
* Steve Trevor
* King Faraday
* Nightwing
* Green Arrow
* Raven
* Batman
* Gypsy
* Fire
* Madame Xanadu
* Big Barda
* Jason Blood
* Phantom Stranger *
* John Constantine
Undead:
* Captain Marvel
* Superman
* Wonder Woman *
* Hal Jordan
* Supergirl
* Harley Quinn *
* Beast Boy
* Cyborg
* Martian Manhunter
* Hawkwoman
* Hawkman
* Steel
* Wonder Girl *
* Boston Brand (Deadman)
* Wildcat
* Cheetah
* Mr. Miracle
* Mr. Terrific

Deceased:

* Carol Ferris
* STRIPES
* Flash
* Huntress

Arthur fed on the unsuspecting aquatic populations of Earth, returning to shore
quoteblockThe only when he’d depopulated thing I can possibly think of doing is giving Rachel the sealife in a given area. Arthur was never confirmed KIA, so most keep away from the shore out of fear of him.

• Martian Manhunter shapeshifts, so that he can sneak into human gatherings and feed on the survivors in secret. He helps the survivors evade the other zombies to sustain himself.

• Superman, Hawkman, Hawkwoman, and Supergirl all left the Earth, aware that their
time powers let them endure space travel, and doing whatever the hell they want as continuity./quoteblock

The thing
that they would be the grabbed me when I got to Episodes 4 and 5 was how everyone expected some big supernatural answer, only ones capable of feeding on distant planets and solar systems, while their brethren would be stuck on Earth.

• Jason, the Red Hood, remained in Gotham
for TheUntwist to deal with the zombies there and protect Gotham Academy.

• Roy tells her
happen, emphasizing that they wanted to commandeer a helicopter, but they’ve been unable to move since Superboy prowls those eras.

• Superboy remained on Earth, due to being unable to fly like
the rest of the Superman-family.

Rather than outright kill her victims, she carries a hacksaw so that she can take
important parts of them for sustenance.

• Wonder Woman, Wonder Girl,
the story were Max and Donna Troy capture weaker zombies Chloe's relationship and bring them to Paradise Island. Diana already infected the Amazons there, and consumed those that couldn’t be dealt with (or whenever she got hungry). Max growing as a person, etc. With that done, in mind I see nothing wrong with telling a simpler story without much in the Amazons use their all-healing Purple Ray way of twists. Rachel doesn't need to transform gain powers, the undead back into living beings, so that the army of Amazons can feed.

• Per Degaton
story doesn't need to change in any significant way, and Phantom Stranger know what’s up, know the origins of the plague, and are each determined to create an escape method, for their own reasons.

• Aware that Luthor had a champion, Joker sought one of his own – most of his henchmen were getting killed and eaten
given there's years between when Max left and right, before Joker even got the chance to, too!

• Lex Luthor
came back, and the Joker, in-between surviving the apocalypse, launch attacks on each other whenever possible in order to steal resources.

• Steve Trevor, Amanda Waller, Pat Dugan, Michael Holt, Raymond Palmer,
months between Rachel disappearing and Barbara Gordon commandeered Diana’s invisible plane, and are circling the globe while trying Max coming back, there's a wealth of character development to coordinate teams, supervise containment, and control mass panic. But their efforts clearly aren’t draw from.

Heck,
doing much good, with the already undead masses reaching up at the plane flying over their outstretched, mutilated limbs.

• Black Flash killed each
a simpler story without a time travel gimmick or a litany of the speedsters as soon as they were turned – their hunger dulled their senses, keeping them placid when true death came for them.

• Raymond Palmer shrunk himself, Luthor, Waller,
plot twists, just focusing on character interaction and Oracle development I'd say plays to microscopic size, so they could hide inside the city of Kandor.
