* {{Dedication}}: The series finale ends with a dedication to the people of Harlan, Kentucky, The men and women of the united marshals service and to Elmore Leonard who died 2 years before the shows final season.
** "Brother's Keeper" ends with a dedication to (real-life) Deputy Marshals Derek Hotsinpiller and John Perry, both killed in the line of duty in 2011. After [[TearJerker/{{Justified}} the events of the episode]], it hits pretty hard.

Added DiffLines:

* NoisyNature: A lot of the outdoor scenes in Harlan County have a [[https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Hermit_Thrush hermit thrush]] singing in the background (or at night, occasionally a [[https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Eastern_Screech-Owl screech owl]]). Both species are common in the Appalachians, although the thrush more often comes down to Kentucky in the winter.

* ActingInTheDark: During most of season one, the audience was wondering if redneck racist Boyd Crowder had really Found the Lord and become a (fairly nutty) backwoods preacher, or was just scamming everyone. It turns out Creator/WaltonGoggins, who played Boyd, didn't know either. In this case, the writers/producers did this to force him to play it ambiguously.

* FocusGroupEnding: When the pilot was shown to focus groups, they loved the character of Boyd Crowder as portrayed by Walton Goggins and hated that he is killed at the end of the episode. Despite the fact that they tried to be very faithful to the Elmore Leonard short story the show is based on, a decision was made to reshoot the ending of the pilot and keep the character alive. The complicated relationship between the show's hero Raylan Givens and Boyd Crowder then became the keystone of the show and was responsible for much of its popularity and critical acclaim.

** While filming the pilot episode, Creator/Wal Goggins kept the various temporary racist tattoos that the character Boyd had on during the entire time he filmed the episode in order to channel the disdain he received from strangers into his performance. Timothy Olyphant was not made aware of this until filming of the pilot began, when he invited Walt out for dinner and was horrified when he saw that Walt didn't have the tattoos removed after that day's filming wrapped.

* WagTheDirector: Creator/WaltGoggins was able to score considerable creative control over his character Boyd, when the show's producers asked him if he would sign on for season one after filming the pilot. In particular, the character's transformation into a repentant Born-Again Christian was Walt's idea (along with the notion that Raylan would not believe that Boyd had reformed).

** Some of the wagging may have been on Timothy Olyphant's part, considering that according to Goggins, he himself initially turned-down the role. He only agreed to take it after Olyphant sweet-talked him into it and came up with some major revisions to the character.

--> '''Raylan:''' You see these old timers right here? Well I don't think a week goes by I don't look at them and wonder... [[{{Series/Deadwood}} Should I grow a moustache?]]
** Ethan Picker is of Greek ancestry like his actor John Kapelos.
** Creator/WilliamMapother's character Delroy was raised in a 'commune'...much like his character on ''Series/{{LOST}}''.
** Mickey Jones' charatcer Hot-Rod mentions having been a musician. Jones is a musician who has played with the likes of Bob Dylan.

Thankfully, once the series was picked up by FX, Goggins was signed up for the second half of the season and a new ending made showing that he survived, due to Raylan purposely missing Boyd's heart when he shot him in the chest. Consider how Boyd became the EnsembleDarkhorse insanely quick, [[TropesAreNotBad this is a good case of the trope]].

* HeyItsThatGuy:
** There're probably a good number of people here who can picture Arlo Givens yelling at Raylan, "[[Film/WalkHardTheDeweyCoxStory The wrong kid died!]]"
** "The Fixer" is played by Steve from SexAndTheCity. It also shows {{Series/Community}} fans just exactly how dark Dr. Rich's soul truly is - he's almost unrecognizable as Travis Travers.
** "Long in the Tooth" features [[Film/FerrisBuellersDayOff Alan]] [[SpinCity Ruck]] as a [[ItMakesSenseInContext renegade dentist]]. (Who pulls out Brandon Keener's--[[Franchise/MassEffect Garrus Valkarian's]]--teeth.)
** "The Collection" has [[Series/StarTrekVoyager Robert]] [[Series/StargateAtlantis Picardo]] as an art collector and [[Series/ArrestedDevelopment Tony]] [[Series/{{Chuck}} Hale]] as a meeky art seller.
** Judge Reardon from "The Hammer" and "Save My Love" is played by Creator/StephenRoot. If you didn't recognize him as [[Film/OfficeSpace Milton]] (see ActorAllusion above), you may have recently seen him [[Series/TwentyFour being stuffed into a CTU air vent]].
** Tommy Bucks is [[Film/PulpFiction Zed, baby. Zed's dead.]]
** Devil is [[Series/FridayNightLights Herc]]. Or [[Series/{{Undeclared}} Lucien]].
** Rachel is that woman who [[Series/{{Firefly}} accused River of being a witch]].
** Tim is the douchey best friend from Film/{{Eurotrip}}.
** Season 2's BigBad, Mags Bennett, is played by Margo Martindale, a HITG in the truest sense of the word (Camilla the record-keeper in Series/{{Dexter}}, [[Film/WalkHardTheDeweyCoxStory Ma Cox]] (across Arlo Givens above), [[Series/{{Hung}} Ray Drecker]]'s first "client," [[Series/NurseJackie Nurse Klowden]], and too many minor-but-substantial movie roles to count).
** Special note should go to all the alumni from ''Series/{{Lost}}'', mostly because they're amazing:
*** Arlo also played Ray Shephard (protagonist Jack's grandfather), in addition to his ''Film/WalkHardTheDeweyCoxStory'' role.
*** Creator/MCGainey is Bo Crowder, who played Mr. Friendly.
*** Dickie Bennett is played by Jeremy Davies, who was Daniel Faraday. Looks like he has a better relationship with his mom here.
*** Also, Dickie's brother Coover is played by Brad William Henke, who played Bram.
*** Creator/WilliamMapother, better known as Ethan, turns up as Delroy.
*** In Season 6, Zachariah is played by Jeff Fahey, who played Frank Lapidus.
** Season 3 has [[Series/{{Dexter}} Joey Quinn]] as Fletcher Nix, a quick-draw specialist, and Neal [=McDonough=], who's been in everything but most recently was seen as [[Film/CaptainAmericaTheFirstAvenger "Dum-Dum" Dugan]] and Series/TinMan.
*** Also featuring [[ForrestGump Mykelti]] [[Film/ConAir Williamson]] as Limehouse.
*** Series/{{Psych}} fans will be surprised that Detective Juliet O'Hara moonlights as an organ harvester.
*** Sarno, the Detroit enforcer is Creator/MichaelIronside.
** There has been a stunning number of guest stars formerly of Deadwood. It's practically a modern-day sequel at this point.
