Creator/BryanCranston believed that "it was a mistake" for [[spoiler:his character to die so early]].early]].
** While Creator/GarethEdwards enjoyed making the film, after watching ''Film/GodzillaMinusOne'' in Japan, he felt he should have created his film in similar context as ''Minus One''. Since that film has a very powerful context in its subject matter that became appealing to the western audiences in the US.

** Dean Devlin, the director of the [[Film/Godzilla1998 1998 film]], actually approves the Legendary version of Godzilla, since the TruerToTheText version of the character was given enough praise by fans and critics. It really speaks volumes since he lamented what he did wrong with the character, and shows his approval for this incarnation.

Creator Chosen Casting is when the casting of an adaptation is influenced by the creator of the work being adapted. If the choice was made by the adaptation's creators, it doesn't count.

* AuthorsSavingThrow:
** The biggest reason why [[Film/Godzilla1998 the last American adaptation of the franchise]] was despised by fans and Toho alike was that it took too many liberties with Godzilla’s known abilities and appearance by having the creature itself be an irradiated iguana as opposed to a dinosaur, lacks his famous atomic breath and [[AdaptationalWimp has it die by mere missiles]]. Legendary Pictures, Warner Bros. and Director Gareth Edwards make it clear that this version is true to the classic movies, as his appearance is much closer to that of the Japanese movies, and retains his invincibility and atomic breath.
** [[Film/GodzillaFinalWars The last Godzilla film made before this one]] caught heat from a sizable portion of the fanbase who felt it focused too much on high octane action that the human drama felt noticeably weak. This film gives the human story more weight to it and shows the destruction the monsters are causing and how it's affecting the world at large. [[CriticalDissonance Unfortunately, while this did earn the new movie praise by many critics, movie goers and fans alike are more divisive on the matter]].
** For a while, the home video releases had a [[DigitalDestruction poor transfer]] that made the film much darker than it's supposed to be. The 4K Blu-ray release rectifies this issue, making the visuals almost identical to the theatrical release.

* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** It was rumored that Creator/GuillermoDelToro was approached by Legendary Pictures to direct, though these rumors have since been debunked. Considering that the man has worked on a [[Film/PacificRim similar project]]... WhatCouldHaveBeen, indeed.
** The project started off in 2004, in the months before the release of ''Film/GodzillaFinalWars'', as an IMAX 3D short film remake of ''Film/GodzillaVsHedorah'' tentatively called ''Godzilla 3D to the Max'' that even had Yoshimitsu Banno as director at the time. Over the course of 2007-2009, the project eventually morphed into a feature-length film under the aegis of Creator/LegendaryPictures.
** Godzilla was originally planned to be [[HumanPopsicle found preserved in a Siberian glacier]], like in the script for ''Script/Godzilla1994''. This was changed when the film team heard that ''Film/ManOfSteel'' had a very similar scene with the discovery of the Fortress of Solitude, in a case of pre-production DerivativeDifferentiation.
** The trailer with Oppenheimer speaking featured a few scenes of destruction cut and showed a huge, multi-armed roller kaiju, apparently dead. It's not seen in the movie.
** That creature was revealed to be a placeholder. However, [[http://www.godzilla-movies.com/news/introducing-rokmutul-and-pterodactyl-unused-monster-concepts-from-godzilla-2014 these two monsters]] were revealed to have almost been the creatures Godzilla fought. The idea was a multi-limbed creature and a flier, which eventually became the MUTOS.
** The "Art of Destruction" book included concept art of a dogfight between the Male MUTO and some fighter jets.
** It also included an idea of the original script which was that the Male MUTO was presumably killed during the Hawaii fight but was actually cocooning and growing wings.
** The cinematographers originally planned for the scene with Joe Brody's interrogation and outburst at the MONARCH facility to be shot using several elaborate camera angles and cuts. Bryan Cranston did such a good job with the first rehearsal take that they decided to just use that one and scrap their previous plans.
** There were apparently several attempts to [[spoiler: keep Joe Brody alive in the [[http://www.empireonline.com/features/godzilla-secrets-gareth-edwards/p2 script.]] Bryan Cranston himself said that killing him off was a "narrative mistake".]]
** In earlier drafts, Godzilla was to fight a pair of monsters named Rockmutul and Pterodactyl. Not much is known about them, though judging by concept art, they were going to be very obvious expies of Anguirus and Rodan
** Akira Takarada was meant to have a cameo in the film as an airport customs official, but the scene was cut for an unknown reason.
** There were also plans for an extended cut of the film, which seems to have been quietly cancelled.

* MissingTrailerScene: None of the stuff in the initial teaser trailer makes it into the film (not the centipede kaiju, not the city that was demolished, no shots of people climbing on the outsides of ruined building). There's also no speech briefing the soldiers about their HALO jump, and no scene of Godzilla roaring as the shelter doors close on the subway (which is instead replaced with the initial clash between Godzilla and the flying [=MUTO=]. The HALO jump also is given a shot of Godzilla and the winged [=MUTO=] fighting, instead of Godzilla walking around the city. The "Can you kill it?" conversation also never takes place.

* FanNickname:
** "Vishnu" for the giant centipede in the teaser trailer, named after the part of the Oppenheimer quote that plays over its shot in the teaser trailer. A rumor on the internet was that Talaghan was its official name, but this was proven untrue.
** While the Mutos aren't given names in the film, fans refer to the male one as "Hokmuto" (for being discovered in Hokkaido) and refer the female one as "Femuto" (for obvious reasons) based on script rumors.
