** [[OnceMoreWithClarity Watching the entire scene in episode 33]] showed that it was Wei Wuxian who deliberately let go of Lan Wanji after Jiang Cheng stabbed at the rock. Wei Wuxian's last action was to prevent Lan Wanji from possibly falling and dying with him and to prevent an already devastated Jiang Cheng from committing fraticide. Even in the face of death, Wei Wuxian was trying to protect and save the people he loved.

At first, the reunion is sweet since they act casual with each other and eat soup like they used to in the past. But then the bitter seeps in when it gradually becomes clear to Wei Wuxian that they're not just visiting, but also attempting to convince him to return to Lotus Pier. While Wei Wuxian wants to be with them again, he refuses to leave the Wens alone and defenseless, even if it means he would have to keep his distance for a long time.

The scene gets more heart-wrenching as Wei Wuxian continues to stare into open space and Wen Ning gently asks him what he was doing.
