** If you pay close enough attention to the band members, you may notice that the [[AllDrummersAreAnimals bongo player]] is [[WesternAnimation/TweetyAndSylvester Tweety]], in mutated form, from the WesternAnimation/LooneyTunes short ''Hyde and Go Tweet''.

* In [[Film/TomorrowNeverDies "Tamale Never Dies"]], while talking about the contributions ancient civilizations made to corn, Deb Duchon says "Without the Aztecs, we wouldn't have the ''Franchise/AlienVsPredator'' films, now would we?" It's a reference to the film's ancient Predators using ships that looked like Aztec and Egyptian pyramids to reach Earth.

* "Behind the Bird" is filmed in a manner reminiscent of ''Film/TheBlairWitchProject''.

* *Alton holds up a pizza peel* "This is my favorite peel, [[Series/TheAvengers Emma]]."

* The pomegranate episode is called [[Film/PlanNineFromOuterSpace "Fruit 10 from Outer Space"]].

* In "True Brew: Amber Waves", Austin dresses as Film/AustinPowers when describing the flavor profiles of ale.

* After [[http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/peanut-brittle-recipe.html making peanut brittle]] he references the [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6rHeD5x2tI Tootsie Pop commercials]] by taking three licks and then biting to reach the "center". * In the peanut episode, George Washington Carver's ghost gets revenge on Alton for ignoring peanuts by filling his bed with them. [[Film/TheGodfather When Alton wakes up in the morning, he throws back his gold silk sheets to discover he's covered in peanuts, prompting him to scream in terror]].

* The Sugarplum Fairy in the hour-long Christmas special seems to owe most of her characterization to the Ghost of Christmas Present from ''Film/{{Scrooged}}''.

* "Pantry Raid V" contains multiple references to ''Film/AnimalHouse'', as the introduction to ramen takes place in, appropriately enough, a dorm.

* In the pomegranate episode they bring the fake doctor bit back and Alton cheerfully describes a gelatin dish he made as "a dessert that even [[Literature/OneFlewOverTheCuckoosNest Nurse Ratched]] could love!"
* In the Power Bar episode, Alton has questions about the ingredients in a protein bar being marketed as health food. (These UnfortunateIngredients included high-fructose corn syrup, large amounts of sodium, and palm kernel oil.) He consults with Coco Carl, who is in a maximum security prison à la [[Literature/TheSilenceOfTheLambs Hannibal Lecter]].

* The Stuffing episode made heavy references to ''Series/TheTonightShow'' with Johnny Carson. The point was that all the parts of a stuffing (whether it's for a roast turkey or an acorn squash) all fit together, just as all the parts of this particular VarietyShow did.

* The end of "My Shakshuka" has guest Alex Guanaschelli sampling Alton's shakshuka dish. As she does so, she starts going on a lengthy critique of his dish, much like she does on Creator/FoodNetwork sister show ''Series/{{Chopped}}''.

* From the episode about pomegranates--in the segment about grenadine syrup's use in cocktails, Alton demonstrates by making a [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tequila_Sunrise_(song) Tequila Sunrise]]. When he's done, he proudly presents it with the comment "There you are--an Music/{{Eagles}} concert in a glass!"
* The series about alcohol is named [[{{Music/Madonna}} "True Brew"]].

* In the episode on bread pudding, he yells out that [[Music/PinkFloyd "you can't get your pudding if you don't eat your meat!"]]

* His character of "The Waffler" in "The Waffle Truth" was clearly inspired by the same named recruitment-reject character in ''Film/MysteryMen''... except without the burnt parts. His outfit seems closer to Crow T. Robot's Willy the Waffle Sprite costume from ''Series/MysteryScienceTheater3000''. He's even got a W cut out from a waffle on his head. Plus he has a little puppet theater called the Mystery Food Science Theater complete with little opening doors.

* The animations featured in later-season episodes are done in a pastiche of Creator/TerryGilliam's style. They even used the [[PublicDomainSoundtrack "Liberty Bell March"]] as BGM on more than one occasion.[[note]]In "Raising the Bar", the classic cocktails episode, and in the one-hour Thanksgiving special [[Film/RomancingTheStone "Romancing the Bird"]], wherein Brown makes cornbread pudding while blindfolded.[[/note]]

** An X-ray machine shows little Pac-Men representing pacreatic enzymes--sound effects from the video games included--in "Creole in a Bowl".

* "My Shakshuka" is filmed in the style of ''Film/{{Casablanca}}'', which happens to be Alton's--and SpecialGuest [[Series/{{Chopped}} Alex]] [[Series/IronChef Guarnaschelli]]'s--favorite film[[note]]tied with ''Film/{{Jaws}}'', as [[https://youtu.be/Zjsp9RSQkW4 mentioned here]][[/note]].

* References are made to Music/SimonAndGarfunkel's "Scarborough Fair" whenever Alton brings up any of the song's herbal medley of parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme. If a recipe only called for three items from this quartet, Alton would deem it necessary to apologize to the duo's fans.

* When presenting different types of cutting boards, he expresses a particular dislike of glass boards (glass is actually exceptionally hard, making it rough on knives), calling it "[[Franchise/StarWars Dark Lord of the Sith]]" bad.
* "Down and Out in Paradise" (various tropical foods) references both ''Series/GilligansIsland'' and ''Film/CastAway''.

* [[WesternAnimation/BugsBunny "What's Up, Duck?"]] features numerous cartoon [=shoutout=]s as Alton conducts thermodynamic experiment on duck-shaped ice blocks named [[WesternAnimation/DaffyDuck Daffy]], [[WesternAnimation/DarkwingDuck Darkwing]], [[WesternAnimation/DonaldDuck Donald]], WesternAnimation/{{Duckman}}, and [[Comicbook/HowardTheDuck Howard]].
