* BidDamnReunion: Michele and André finally reunite in season 2. [[spoiler: They don't stick together for very long, though.]]

* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: Ezequiel's MoralityPet Augusto [[spoiler:the son of his late wife]] is mysteriously absent in season 2 and is only mentioned in a flashback.

* BiTheWay: Joana makes out with a male candidate during The Process, and later becomes an OfficialCouple with [[spoiler: Natalia]]

In the future, people are divided between those living in poverty and strife in [[CrapsackWorld the Inland]] and those living in luxury and comfort in [[CityOnTheWater the Offshore]]. Every year, 20 year olds get the chance to participate in "The Process", a series of test with the purpose of identifying those from the Inland deserving to join the elite in the Offshore. The Process tests the candidates' mental capacities, motivation, social skills and much more, ruthlessly weeding out all of those less than ideal until only the top 3% remain.

* AirVentPassageway: Joana climbs through a more or less realistically proportioned (but oddly placed) one in Season 2's penultimate episode, barely even traversible diagonally for the slender woman.

* {{Polyamory}}: In season 2, it's revealed that [[spoiler:the founding couple were initially a founding trio of one man and two women in a relationship with each others]].

* RightForTheWrongReasons: Offshore propaganda claims that The Cause are just people resenful for not being good enough to pass The Process. This is clearly a lie, since at least 3 Cause agents have made it through. However, in season 3 we learn that the founder of The Cause really was motivated by their failure in The Process, and wouldn't have thought twice about its unfairness if she had passed.

* ShootTheDog: The Founding Couple are forced to send their dughter to The Inland and make her take The Process in order to mantain the Offshore philosophy, it's particularly heat wrenching when [[spoiler: she fails The Process and they send her back to The Inland.]]

* SuddenSequelDeathSyndrome: [[spoiler: Fernando]] dies offscreen between seasons 2 and 3.

* WellIntentionedExtremist: Some members of The Cause have shades of this, but Silas takes the crown. He was not only willing to detonate a bomb inside the Process building (which would kill several innocent candidates), as he also [[spoiler: ratted out Joana to Gerson's militia in order to get fertiliser to make a second bomb, after Michele handed the first one to the offshore]].

* {{Foreshadowing}}:

* AdamAndEvePlot: Downplayed, while they brought more people, the Offshore was founded by a couple. [[spoiler: This ends up being completely averted when we find out that 1) Nobody in the Offshore can reproduce and 2) The founders were originally ''a trio'', not a couple.]]

* MassiveNumberedSiblings: Rafael grew up with six siblings, and when his mother is shown she is heavily pregnant. Rafael specifically says his mother kept having kids in an attempt to get over failing the Process.

* CreateYourOwnHero: Season 3 reveals that [[spoiler: The Cause has founded by the children of the first inhabitants of the Offshore, who were exiled in the Inland after the law forbidding heredity was created, with the daughter of the Fouding Couple as their first leader. In other words, the Offshore indirectly created The Cause.]]

* SuddenSequelDeathSydrome: [[spoiler: Fernando]] dies offscreen between seasons 2 and 3.

* {{Transsexual}}: Ariel in season 2 is a MTF transsexual.

* HazyFeelTurn: Pretty much every time Michele switched sides (and she switches sides ''a lot'') she does it with a somewhat understandable motivation, while still leaving the viewer not quite unable to blame her.

* RedemptionEqualsDeath: In Episode 5 of Season 2, [[spoiler:Ezequiel]] reveals himself to be a triple agent for The Cause, and that all his actions to that point were meant to help them end the Process. He ends up getting killed at the end of the episode.

* TheUntwist: André is accused of murder, but Michele is convinced he's incapabe of something like that. He never confessed nor denied to have done it and has been confined to the RTC, with his memories of the incidente wiped out. [[spoiler: It turns out he did commit the murder to keep the secret of the Founding Trio hidden, and Marcela wiped his memory as an extra precaution.]]

** In episode 4 of the first season, Joana escapes from the test area to the lavish office of Ezequiel but, after a conversation with him, she goes back and leads the candidates to overthrow Marco's authoritarian group. At the end of the season, she is on the verge of passong the process and finally escaping to the Offshore when, after a conversation with Ezequiel, decides to go back to the Inland and ends up becoming [[spoiler: the leader of The Cause.]]

** When someone is eliminated, the Process employees usually deliver a pattern speech about the elimination, saying that "the joy of having children" is the best way to cope with the elimination trauma. In the end of season 1, [[spoiler: it's revealed that the candidates approved are turned sterile before going to The Offshore, as heredity is banned in their society and the only way to become a citizen is through merit (that is, being approved in The Process). In other words, they need to encourage the people in The Inland to reproduce in order to avoid human extinction.]]

** However, if the opening montage showing a submarine going to The Offshore is any indication, it looks like [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pará Pará]] coast.

* TheRevolutionWillNotBeVilified: This is Joana's main goal in season 2.

* TheStoic: Cassia hardly ever shows any emotion. [[spoiler: The most emotional she gets is expressing frustration for Michele resisting the memory erasing procedure.]]
* SuicideIsShameful: [[spoiler:Ezequiel's wife]] is denied a proper funeral because she betrayed the laws of the Offshore by committing suicide.

* WantedPoster: Joana rips off a "wanted" poster of herself in the first episode of Season 2.

* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: In Season 2, [[spoiler: Fernando delivers two of those, both against the process and his father's process-based religion. The first one results in him being beaten up by some of his father's followers and the second one (through the radio and with the intention to reveal about the Offshore inhabitants being turned sterile) ends with his father giving him up to the Offshore soldiers.]]

* MeaningfulEcho: Joanna disses Ezequiel with the same words that his wife used. This echo breaks him, and he's last seen in Season 1 in the bathroom he wrecks from his meltdown.

* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: Ezequiel's MoralityPet Augusto [[spoiler:the so of his late wife]] is mysteriously absent in season 2 and is only mentionned in a flashback.

* TheHeart: Fernando is the only one who doesn't cheat, lie, backstab or otherwise play ''very'' dirty in order to accomplish his goals, the others learn to value his moral compass. Interestingly, he's also the brains of the group.

* {{Unperson}}: There were three original founders of the Offshore, two women and a man, but nobody seems to have memory of the second woman as of 104 years later.
