* AfterTheEnd: The Inland is what's left of the old society, iplied to have fallen to war and pollution, while The Offshore is an island designed to salvage nature and technology. Sason two reveals [[spoiler: the Offshore founders intentionally made the end even worse in order to protect their island.]]

* BecomingTheMask: The Cause is wary of this happening to it's moles. It turns out that the fear is justified, since the first ole betrayed them and became a prominent Offshore citizen.

* BlueBlood: Marco comes from the Alvarez family, famous because all of them pass The Process and even have a maid, although he still lives in an dirty old house and has little food, and he as to pass The Process on his own if he wants to join his family. [[spoiler: It turns out the system is intentionally set to avoid this, so nobody can get wealth and power just from being born in a wealthy and powerful family.]]

* BrokenPedestal: Michele falls victim of this each time a season comes to a close, in the first one she finds out her mentor lied to her and [[spoiler: her brother's alive]], in the second she finds out [[spoiler: not only is her brother guilty of murder, he did it to hide that the Offshore intentionally screwed over the Inland]].

There's also a prominent poliamorous relationship that all seem to find normal.
