** In "Forks," Ritchie and Terry are bonding over their fathers when Terry starts a story about her late father's journals and the way he signed each of them off with a specific phrase, which she doesn't get the chance to tell Ritchie. The editing implies it's her kitchen motto "Every Second Counts." [[spoiler:Appears twice in later episodes: Once, as Ritchie later frames Mikey's last note to Carmy ("I love you dude. Let it rip.") to hang in the kitchen as similar motivation. Also as Luca mails Marcus the same "Every Second Counts" sign to hang near his station (Luca also having trained with Chef Terry) as a reminder of their time together.]]

Added DiffLines:

* SecretTestOfCharacter: When Ritchie and Natalie are interviewing servers, Ritchie intentionally leaves a napkin out of place at their table, rejecting a candidate who fails to notice this as lacking the attention to detail he picked up during his time with Chef Terry.

* SlobsVersusSnobs: A major point of conflict in the first half of the season is Carmy's ''haute cuisine'' background clashing with his staffs more humble line cook origins. In an interesting turn for the trope, the narrative leans towards Carmen's side of the argument, with the kitchen becoming much smoother and the chefs starting to flourish in their respective roles once he implements a brigade system. Season 2 expands on this, with Richie finally coming to respect fine dining.

** In "Fishes," Carmy is asked about his time in Copenhagen, to which he mentions sleeping on a house boat and "feeding an invisible cat." In "Honeydew," Marcus ends up sleeping on the same house boat, feeding the same cat (that still never appears), and relates these to his ill mother when he calls home.

** Early in Season 1, Ritchie finds a letter from Mikey to Carmy, and as he is furious at Carmy at the time, he hides it behind the employee lockers. Notably his face isn't in the frame when Carmy hears the words, unlike all the other insults when he is clearly shown saying them. * LoanShark: Cicero's position isn't made clear, but implied to be this. Unlike most loan sharks, he's rather friendly and doesn't seem to be in any hurry -- at worst, using it as pressure to get Carmy to sell him the property to make it square. [[spoiler: He loaned Mikey over $300,000, but it doesn't seem like a dime of it was poured into the business. Given Mikey was an addict...the ending leaves some unanswered questions, however, as to exactly what he was up to.]]

* TheTeamBenefactor: Cicero is the one providing the funding that allows the Beef to survive and for Carmy to transform it into the Bear. However, he's also intent on getting his money back and won't hesitate to seize the property and sell it off if necessary.
