* SeparateBirthdayTwins: Louie was born at 11:58 pm, Beast was born at 12:03 am. This causes a schism between them when Harley gets frustrated with Louie's unrealistic demands for a compensation party and encourages Beast to think for himself. They reconcile at the end of the episode.

* DaddyIssues: Aidan is often because his father keeps canceling on him. Harley later helps them learn to communicate better in "... Perfect Gift."

** ''Dancing With My Dad'' - dancing competition show featuring fathers dancing with their daughters. The Diazes eventually become contestants in "Stuck Dancing with My Dad", parody of ''Dance Moms.''
** ''Dance Dads'' - show about dads whose daughters dance.

* ShowWithinAShow: There are several, with the most recurring ones being ''Dancing With My Dad'', ''Dumpster Jack'' and ''Shouty Housewives of New England.'' In "Stuck Dancing with My Dad," the Diazes even become contestants in their favorite show, ''Dancing With My Dad.''

* MyBelovedSmother: Mrs. Peterson with regards to her only daughter, Ellie.

* VagueAge: The show can't seem to decide if Ethan is older than Georgie or younger; different episodes seem to change the order. Georgie is explicitly fifteen now, but sometimes Ethan is older than Georgie and sometimes younger. Additionally, the twins are somewhere between Daphne's age of "sinister six" and Harley's thirteen. Given that, in season 2, the twins are not at the same school as the older kids, it seems likely that the twins are under the age of eleven, and it is later revealed that they are eight.

* ElmuhFuddSyndwome: Daphne seems to have difficulty pronouncing her R's. This is a trait that might disappear as she grows older and is probably a case of RealLifeWritesThePlot, as the young actress probably speaks the same way as her character.

* CrankyNeighbor: Bethany Peters, who loathes Suzy and Tom's parenting style, very different from her own.

* [[CoolBigSis Cool Older Siblings]]: Georgie, Ethan, and even Harley spend a fair amount of time interacting with all of their younger siblings. Also, although Rachel initially seems like an [[AloofBigBrother Aloof Big Sister]], she later starts to interact with the younger children as well as the older ones.

* TownGirls: Rachel and Daphne are Feeme, Georgie is Butch, and Harley is Neither.
