Origin: Magikarp Jump
Probability: Highly unlikely
This is one of the most silly suggestions on the list, but I'm basically just throwing ideas around, so... Anyone remembers Magikarp Jump? That *other* Pokémon mobile game? One of the features of said game was that there was a wide variety of Magikarp patterns you could fish. Plain, calico, striped, masked, patched, orange, pink, white, purple, blue, and so on. And frankly, why not add some of them in Pokémon GO; we already have 20 different Spinda forms, might as well have 20 different Magikarp if the goal is to cater to degenerate compulsive collectors (like me). Heck, re-run the Magikarp Festival, except the pattern pool for wild Magikarp rotates every day. Oh, and give them Bounce as their Charged Attack, just to fit with their game of origin.

Pink Butterfree

to:

\nPink Butterfree\nOrigin: Super Smash Bros.
Probability: Highly unlikely
Is this more silly than the Magikarp patterns? I'm not sure, but I still feel there was a missed opportunity for a cross-promotion with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate back when it was released. At this point, Jigglypuff is more of a Smash character than a Pokémon character; not that it's a bad thing, it keeps her more relevant than other minor Pokémon species. Some of her costumes from the Smash series are among the most fondly-remembered of the series, such as the crown, ribbon and straw hat, whereas others are neat references to the series, such as Leaf's cap, Serena's hat, and the nurse hat. Niantic is not going to stop giving hats to Pokémon anytime soon, might as well put them on something *other* than Pikachu.

Origin: Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness
Probability: Very likely
Had you asked me last year if Shadow Lugia, the ultimate and most menacing threat of Pokémon XD, the supposedly "unpurifiable" Legendary, could make it into Pokémon GO, I would have said that while it would be amazing, but very unlikely given that it only ever appeared in a single spin-off title back in 2005. I would've also said that considering it never made it to Pokémon Shuffle, a game that *also* loved introducing dozens of alternate forms and was made by the *same* developers as Pokémon XD, then there was little chance for Pokéon GO. Since then however, Shadow Pokémon have made an unexpected return, in Pokémon GO itself no less, and suddenly I had to change my expectation from "unlikely" to "probably just a matter of time". Unless there's some sort of copyright tauroscrap regarding this specific form of Lugia, it's safe to say that the whole Rocket storyline is leading to it. I only hope that purifying it will let it keep its unique model and color scheme, because that was always the biggest letdown of Pokémon XD.

to:

Origin: Pokémon Mystery Dungeon? Anime?
Probability: Possible
Some of you might be confused, so let me clarify: this is not a Shiny Kecleon. Shiny Kecleon is still green, but with a blue stripe. Purple Kecleon, however, is a weird case, in that it's even hard to say where it came from. It appeared in both the anime and the Mystery Dungeon games, very early in Generation III promotion at that, yet never appeared in the main games proper. Perhaps Kecleon were supposed to come in multiple colors, but the idea was scrapped and Purple Kecleon is a remnant of that? Nevertheless, it's still iconic to many, especially fans of the Mystery Dungeon series, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was introduced in Pokémon GO. Maybe it could be an occasion to introduce even more Kecleon colour variants. You know, whenever regular Kecleon finally makes it. ~~Unless it's been here this whole time, just invisible.~~

to:

Origin: Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time/Darkness/Sky
Probability: Very unlikely
Either you're familiar with Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, or you're wondering why a vaguely different Dialga would be added to Pokémon GO. As a matter of fact, it's unlikely to make it, given it only appeared as the final boss of a niche spin-off from a decade ago. Still, it's probably the second most notorious example of a "corrupted" Legendary Pokémon, so I feel it deserves a mention. I'm not saying it's definitely out, as Niantic is always looking for incentives to make us raid more, but it certainly lacks a bit of the coolness factor of Armored mewtwo or Shadow Lugia. Plus, its English names gets kind of confusing in regards to Primal Kyogre and Primal Groudon.

to:

Origin: Pokkén Tournament
Probability: Possible
I said earlier that Shadow Pokémon made their grand return in Pokémon GO, but the truth is that they had been alluded to with the final boss of Pokkén Tournament, albeit its backstory had nothing to do with an evil team brainwashing Pokémon to corrupt them. While Shadow Lugia is definitely the most likely Shadow Legendary to make it into Pokémon GO, I would *defintiely* be in favour of Shadow Mewtwo as well. It looks amazing, it ties into the ongoing Shadow Pokémon storyline, and despite being from yet another niche spin-off, that one is at least fresh on most minds, having been re-released for the Switch in 2017. Again, please let it stay awesome-looking once purified.

Origin: Pokémon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire
Probability: Possible
This is probably the worst way to open this list, as I assume most people would rather not have yet another Pikachu costume introduced, let alone *five* of them. Still, those costumes are way more interesting to look at than just a mere hat, and they do come directly from a main series game, so I'd say we'd all rather have those than Sailor Hat Pikachu or whatever. While ORAS released all the way back in 2014, the Pikachu Libre costume did show up since in both Pokkén and Smash Bros, so it does still hold a little relevancy. Each costume also came with an exclusive move, which would also make them a bit more unique. One last remark is that Cosplay Pikachu could not evolve or breed in ORAS, and it'd probably be true in Pokémon GO as well... but I would absolutely love to be able to get a Rock Star Raichu or a PhD Pichu.

Eternal Floette

to:

\nOrigin: Pokémon HeartGold & SoulSilver
Probability: Unlikely
I promise this list isn't made up of Pikachu costumes. Still, when it comes to unique alternate forms, the event-exclusive Spiky-eared Pichu from HGSS comes to mind, and I wouldn't mind seeing her again. However, it's been a decade since her last appearance (aside from a Smash Bros costume), so while it's *possible* it'll happen, it is quite unlikely. This is also another one that cannot evolve, which I suppose would annoy some players. But whenever another Johto event hits, it'd be neat to have her as the focus of a short Special Research; possibly one that would also award a Shiny Pichu, since one specific Shiny Pichu was necessary to obtain Spiky-eared Pichu in HGSS, and was featured in artwork with her.

Eternal Flower Floette
Origin: Pokémon X & Y
Probability: Plausible
While Generation VI is still a far cry away from being added to Pokémon GO, I feel Eternal Flower Floette deserves a mention nonetheless. For those unaware, the Floette family comes in five different colors (red, orange, yellow, blue, white), but this specific Floette has a unique coloration and much higher stats than usual, as it is part of the backstory of Pokémon X & Y; it died in a war 3000 years ago, and was brought back to life by its Trainer, but disappeared after discovering its resurrection had cost hundreds of innocent lives. Yes, this is an actual plot point. But despite being present in the code of the Gen VI and Gen VII games, and even having a unique signature move *and* a unique Pokédex entry, it was *never* distributed, and remains unavailable *to this very day*. I'd say it's about time we can get our hands on it, and with such a backstory, it's a great candidate for a Special Research.

Original Color Magearna
Origin: Pokémon Sun & Moon
Probability: Plausible
I'll keep that one short, because it's basically the same as Eternal Floette: it is present in the code of the Gen VII games and has a unique Dex entry, but was never made available (although unlike Eternal Floette, it is virtually identical to its regular counterpart, and was irrelevant to the games plot). Its only official appearance was in its dedicated movie. It also seems likely for it to make it into Pokémon GO, perhaps even more than Eternal Floette due to Magearna being a Mythical, although it'd feel more at home in Raids than in a Special Research.

to:

Origin: Pokémon GO
Probability: Likely
I assume if you've made it this far into the list, it was to make sure this little dude was present. It's so weird and yet so great that some random Wurmple from a New Year's *loading screen* of all places would get such attention from the community. And honestly, that's why I was surprised not to see it introduced the very next year; Sunglasses Squirtle was a heavily-requested addition, and it *did* get added eventually. Sure, many felt cheated that it recycled Pikachu's sunglasses rather than using the anime ones, but I find it likely that it was either this or nothing; it's at least proof that Niantic *does* have some insight on what kind of variant Pokémon the community would like to see, and *can* deliver on that. And guess what, they already *have* a party hat that they can recycle, so it's not like they need new assets for this. Who knows, maybe every issue the game had in the past two years is because half their staff is focused on figuring out how to not make the party hat look weird on Dustox and Beautifly. Joking aside, call me hopelessly optimistic, but I am adamant that Party hat Wurmple is bound to happen eventually.

* HintSystem: During the last days [[folder:PAGE]]
The first half
of the run, fifth generation of ''Franchise/{{Pokemon}}''. In this installment, Creator/GameFreak shakes up a number of series traditions: the plushies seen when opening player characters are older, the QR scanner held resident Professor (Juniper) is a 3DS screen, which would display an area where some yet uncaught woman, Pokémon Centers and Pokémon Marts have been merged into one building, there are ''no'' Generation I-IV Pokémon in the regional Pokédex, [=TMs=] can be used an infinite amount of times, there's no Game Corner or Safari Zone present, and the new Unova region isn't based on a region of Japan but on UsefulNotes/NewYorkCity (and a little UsefulNotes/NewJersey as well, with the sequels adding more New Jersey).

The games were released on September 18, 2010 in Japan; March 4, 2011 in Europe; March 6, 2011 in the U.S.; and March 10, 2011 in Australia and New Zealand. In another shake-up, these games were also the first to not receive an UpdatedRerelease (à la ''Crystal'' from [[VideoGame/PokemonGoldAndSilver Generation II]] or ''Emerald'' from [[VideoGame/PokemonRubyAndSapphire Generation III]]), instead receiving direct sequels in ''VideoGame/PokemonBlack2AndWhite2'' in 2012.

The ''Iwata Asks'' interview for the games can be read [[http://iwataasks.nintendo.com/interviews/#/ds/pokemon-black-white/0/0 here]].

Not to be confused with ''[[VideoGame/PokemonRedAndBlue Red and Blue]]'', which were ''in'' black and white since they were for the original UsefulNotes/GameBoy. Also not to be confused with the simulation game ''VideoGame/BlackAndWhite''. The English dub of the AnimatedAdaptation known as ''[[Anime/{{Pokemon}} Pocket Monsters: Best Wishes]]'' in Japan also shares the same name as these games.

There was also an online Japanese release of ''Pokémon Battle Chess: BW Version'', a "[[TabletopGame/{{chess}} chess]] and [[TabletopGame/{{shogi}} shogi]]"-hybrid board game themed after ''Pokémon Black and White'', [[http://www.pokemon-bc.com/battle/ available here]] ([[http://web.archive.org/web/20160304184105/http://www.pokemon-bc.com/document/images/PBC_bw_manual_eng.pdf online gameplay instruction manual]]; [[http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Pokémon_Battle_Chess supplementary information]].

!!Schémas présents dans ''Pokémon Noir et Blanc'' :

* BossInMookClothing:
** After beating the Elite Four, you can find Dragonite, Tyranitar, and Metagross in the certain areas of the wild.
** In the post-game, you gain access to a location known as the Challenger's Cave. Aside from a few items, some higher leveled Pokémon from non-Unovan regions, and a few trainers, the place is nothing special on the surface. However, while going through the cave, you can encounter the trainer Veteran Shaun. He has a party of six, powerful Pokémon, including Gyarados, Excadrill, Gigalith, Druddigon, Crobat, and even Snorlax. All of which are probably about fifteen to twenty levels above your current party, assuming you dive right into the cave after beating the main story.
* {{Bowdlerise}}: The original Japanese dialogue for the various "ferris wheel dates" is laced with ''very'' suggestive double entendre - in context, it sounds like some of them are outright trying to seduce you. This was largely removed from the English translation.
* CatchPhrase: "I'm a heartbreaker. My name... Charles."
* TheComputerIsACheatingBastard:
** As usual, some of the Gym Leaders and Elite Four have fully-evolved Pokémon at lower levels than what is required to actually ''get'' those evolutions in the first place.
** [[spoiler:Ghetsis has a Hydreigon at level 54 (Zweilous evolves at level 64).]]
* ConsoleCameo: The player has a Wii in their bedroom. After the first battle with Cheren and Bianca destroys their room, the Wii appears unharmed.
* DarkerAndEdgier: The story for these games deal with more complex social/emotional issues than previous entries in the series, like animal abuse, some GrayAndGrayMorality, and a bit of {{Deconstruction}} of a couple of the franchise's staples like ToBeAMaster.
* EasterEgg: In Nacrene City, the first house you can enter holds a Generation I/II Gym statue, though you can't interact with it.
* ElementalRockPaperScissors: There's a kid NPC early on who challenges you to a game of ''literal'' Elemental Rock-Paper-Scissors. It teaches series newcomers about elemental relations in the process.
* {{Fanservice}}: While it's nothing new, several young trainers wear very revealing outfits...
* GameplayAndStorySegregation:
** Magikarp's Pokédex entry states that, while it can [[InASingleBound leap up a mountain]] with Splash if it lives for many years, "the move remains useless" in combat.
** Scrafty's Pokédex entry states that it gangs up on and beats opponents that enter their territory, as well as being able to spit acid. However, it does not learn Beat Up or Acid Bomb/Acid/Gastro Acid.
** Part of Ferroseed's animation clearly shows it spinning rapidly, but it does not learn Rapid Spin (although it does get Gyro Ball).
** It's perfectly possible to play through the game as the sort of trainer N despises: Regardless of your Pokémons' actual happiness values, N still says that they like you. This is mainly an artifact of the game's happiness mechanics -- trying to get a Mon upset is actually [[BeingEvilSucks pretty hard to do]], since the only ways to really decrease their happiness is to routinely let them be knocked out in combat, or spend a fortune on feeding them the bitter herbal medicines. Just about anything else you can do increases their happiness value -- in fact, even mundane activities like LevelGrinding and just ''walking around'' will slowly put them in a better mood. The player may as well be a [[FriendtoAllLivingThings Friend To All Pokémon]].
** In the story, N [[CurbStompBattle curb-stomps]] the League Champion with the help of [[spoiler:Reshiram or Zekrom]]. Later, if you go back to [[BonusBoss challenge him yourself]], his Pokémon are a good +20 levels stronger than before. It's explained that he was largely out of practice (due to retirement) which is why he was defeated by N; by the the time you face him, he's got his team back up to speed.
* GottaCatchEmAll: In addition to [[TropeNamer the obvious]], after the main quest ends, you get to go find the remaining Plasma Sages with the help of Looker.
* KickTheDog: To make sure the player realizes Team Plasma is criminal after their initial appearance, their subsequent appearances have them literally kicking (or some form of striking anyways) a Munna, then stealing someone's Pokémon.
* {{Leitmotif}}: Cheren, Bianca, Ghetsis, N, Professor Juniper, Papa Juniper (though his is just a remix of his daughter's), Alder, Looker, and [[spoiler:Cynthia]] all get one, as well as the usual generic trainer themes. N even gets an OminousMusicBoxTune remix of his.
* NintendoHard: With only new Pokémon to choose from, some of the bigger battles can be difficult to find appropriate counters against. Additionally, some of the trainers are unusually high leveled and pack strong Pokémon to fight you with, even before the first Gym.
* RunningGag: There is always a fisherman with a team full of Magikarp. ''Always''. However he doesn't show up until the post-game, so this version of him comes at you with a team of L60+ Magikarp.
* ShoutOut:
** Golurk, the massive haunted golem, learns Fly, has huge biceps and has ankle and wrist bracelets and has a "Gao" esque roar. [[Manga/GiantRobo For absolutely]] [[GiantMecha no reason.]]
*** Also, it looks like a suspicious [[Manga/FullmetalAlchemist suit of armor with a soul]] attached to it.
** Purrloin is this to the villainess from ''Anime/{{Yatterman}}''. Its head greatly resembles Doronjo's mask, and when it stands on its hind legs, the markings on its body resemble the rest of her outfit, right down to the long gloves.
** Hydreigon resembles [[Franchise/{{Godzilla}} King Ghidorah]]. Its Japanese name is Sazan''dora''.
*** On the topic of ''Franchise/{{Godzilla}}'' shout-outs, Volcarona looks suspiciously like Mothra.
*** And in the same vein, Scolipede looks quite a bit like Battra's larval form
** Reshiram and Zekrom are incredibly rare dragons, considered to be counterparts of each other. One is white with blue eyes, and the other is black with red eyes. [[Anime/YuGiOh Hmm...]]
*** [[http://danbooru.donmai.us/post/show/732793/blue_eyes_white_dragon-crossover-lowres-no_humans- Some noticed]]. (NSFW ads on the far side of that link)
*** Zekrom also looks like it stole its legs and shoulder pads from fellow black-colored character [[StarWars Darth Vader]]. Not helped by the fact that the lightning it uses glows ''neon blue'' rather than yellow or white, just like Palpatine, Starkiller or any other given Sith Lord (but not Vader himself).
** Krookodile (and Krokorok)
could be found.
At
one point, VRG even ended up fighting to the Kremlings from the ''VideoGame/DonkeyKongCountry'' series. Remember that they are crocodiles whose names start with a Double [[XtremeKoolLetterz "k" instead of a "c"]].
** There is a rock type move called smackdown: [[Wrestling/DwayneJohnson "Do you smell it?"]]
** Zoroark and by extension Zorua look uncannily similar to Oki from ''VideoGame/{{Okami}}''
** Four of the legendaries (Cobalion, Terrakion, Virizion, and Keldeo) are based on ''Literature/TheThreeMusketeers''. (If you're wondering why there are ''four'' guys based on a ''trio'', read the book. Or at least the trope page.)
** The animated portraits that appear in some conversations bear more than a passing resemblance to cutscenes in Game Freak's obscure Super Nintendo game, ''Bushi Seiryuden''.
** Like the previous games, there are a few shout outs to the ''VideoGame/{{MOTHER}}'' series, but this gen there an exceptional amount of ''VideoGame/MOTHER3'' references in particular, like the Dark/Dragon type line, the theme of Nature vs. Technology, an overall DarkerAndEdgier atmosphere, and the [[spoiler:N's Farewell]] theme at the end of the game having fragments of ''VideoGame/{{MOTHER 3}}'''s Love Theme in it.
*** The "Waitress" trainer class strongly resembles Tessie, an NPC from ''Mother 3''.
*** To top it all off, some of the new 'mons visibly resemble ''MOTHER 3'''s chimeras...
*** The "Round" move is reminiscent of the first ''VideoGame/{{MOTHER|1}}''. (Which makes sense, since Creatures, Inc. worked on it.)
** Shauntal of the Elite Four may be a shout out to Velma of Scooby Doo fame, due to her similar appearances, fascination with ghosts, and intellectual disposition.
** Listen closely to [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZuLLVO8S5XE&t=03m33s the sound for Thrash]], it's the start to the ''SuperMarioBros'' theme.
** An office worker in Castelia City states that he is woken with a [[Film/FightClub slap each morning, looks like a wreck, but doesn't care]].
** A shoutout to the days of Red and Blue, the Magikarp Salesman returns, still selling Magikarp for $500... only this time, it's not a scam as it's the only way to legitimately obtain a Magikarp in Black and White without trade or transfer.
** Two of the trainers in the Ground-type Gym are named [[VideoGame/GoldenSun Isaac and Felix]], who, in their source games, are [[DishingOutDirt Venus Adepts]].
** At the Route 9 Mall, there is a [[Videogame/DinerDash waitress named Flo]].
** The scientist who runs the Transfer Machine -- i.e. sending your Pokémon through time and space -- makes use of the words [[Series/DoctorWho "allons-y" and "molto bene."]] And just in case that doesn't convince you it's a reference, he says "fantastic" no less than ''three'' times.
** In the Japanese version, White Forest's only trainers, who Triple
Battle against ''two you, are Nursery Aide [[Manga/AzumangaDaioh Yukari]] and School Kid [[Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion Shinji]], standing next to each other.
*** One that's actually kept in the English version -- in the Nacrene Gym, you fight [[Manga/MahouSenseiNegima Scientist Satomi]].
** In Nimbasa City's larger Sports Dome, one
of them''.the soccer players tells you to join the training of their team, [[VideoGame/InazumaEleven Pokémon Eleven]]. In addition, Nimbasa City was named Raimon City in the Japanese version, so this ''had'' to be intentional. Likewise, some of the basketball players are named [[UsefulNotes/NationalBasketballAssociation LaMarcus and Derrick]].
** Just before he battles you, a Youngster on the Royal Unova will declare that he's [[VideoGame/PokemonRedAndBlue "not just some kid]] [[MemeticMutation who wears shorts."]]
** There's a kid with extremely wealthy parents in Undella City who is named Riches' [[Literature/HarryPotter Draco]].
** One of the battlers in the Battle Subway introduces herself with [[Film/RockyIV "I must break you".]]
** Cheren mentions seeking a [[VideoGame/MortalKombat flawless victory]] at one point.
** [[Series/RoyalPains Doctor Hank]] can be found in Twist Mountain.
** The Grunts screaming [[SayMyName "Plasmaaaaaa!"]] after being defeated may be a reference to [[Franchise/GIJoe Cobra Commander]].
** Whimsicott, the cotton-based Pokémon, can learn Tailwind. Why? [[Film/GoneWithTheWind No reason...]]
** Seven sages, with one having slightly more plot importance, led by a young, green-loving hero... [[VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaOcarinaOfTime hm...]]
** A mistranslated ShoutOut goes to the popular (especially in Japan) ''VideoGame/DragonQuest'' series, where one of the Team Plasma members says, "my stress level has maxed out! The more hyper I am, the faster you'll go down!" In the original Japanese, this was a proper reference to tension levels in ''VideoGame/DragonQuestVIII'' and beyond.
* TechnoBabble: The people at Poké Transfer don't even ''bother'' trying to make an explanation that makes sense; either that, or it's implied the snippets of what the player does hear comes in between them dozing off.
* VariableMix:
** Some routes have additional percussion in the background music when you're walking around.
** In Accumula Town, entering one of the houses and talking to pianist and drummer [=NPCs=] will add piano and percussion tracks to the background music.
** Several cities will add another instrument to the background track depending on your proximity to a street performer.
** On the Battle Subway, new instruments are added for each car you enter.
** When you go to get your first badge for the Pokémon League approved at the first gate, there is silence. Then, when you enter the next room to get the next badge approved, drumming is heard in the background. More instruments are added as you get badges approved until the full instrumentals for the Victory Road theme are playing.
** On the Village Bridge, you can turn the vocals, beatboxing, and guitar on or off by talking to particular people.
** In several areas with basement floors, the music goes into a lower key the further down you go.
* VideoGameCrueltyPotential: Battling Audino is an excellent way to gather large amounts of experience fast, but they often use a move called Heal Pulse that will actually heal your Pokémon, so you might feel a bit bad about beating the crap out of it and thirty of its cousins.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: N and Team Plasma seem to believe that humans and Pokémon should be separated to make the world more [[TitleDrop black and white]], and want to free Pokémon from humans. Although, since it's been proven time and time again that Pokémon enjoy human company, the intentions aren't as well as they might seem at first glance.

\nIt's no secret by now that Pokémon GO loves to throw variants of existing Pokémon at us; that's to be expected of a mobile game that relies on regular new content, really. On top of Shiny, Shadow and Purified Pokémon, we also have species-specific variant, from the recent Costumed starters, to the long-awaited Sunglasses Squirtle, to the unexpected Armored Mewtwo, to the dozen existing Hat Pikachu. So I've decided to try my hand at brainstorming some potential new Pokémon variants inspired by existing forms, spin-offs, and side media. This is mostly just for fun, and some are obviously less likely than others, but I hope you'll enjoy it nonetheless.
