Picking up from Episode 5, Eleven's psychic conversation with Terry reveals that Eleven wasn't always alone in the Hawkins lab - there was another little girl like her. Becky gives Eleven the files that Terry kept on missing children cases that were potentially linked to Eleven's, and Eleven recognizes the face of an Indian girl in a newspaper clipping.

Eleven uses her powers to track the girl in the photograph to Chicago. She searches for her in a rundown industrial neighborhood and confronts the gang of thieves from the first episode. Their leader is Kali - the girl from the newspaper clipping, who has 008 tattooed on her wrist. Kali introduces Eleven to her gang of misfits and makes a display of her own abilities, which include creating powerful illusions and visual hallucinations. After instructing Eleven on how to channel her powers [[ThePowerOfHate with rage]], she invites Eleven to go on a mission with her gang.

The mission consists of tracking down one of the employees of Hawkins lab, a man who tormented Kali as a child and played a part in erasing Terry Ives' mind. Eleven uses her powers to track him to an apartment complex in a nearby town. The man does not recognize them until Kali uses her powers to make him see them as little girls. He begs for mercy, claiming that he was only [[JustFollowingOrders following Dr. Brenner's orders]] and that he can take tell the girls where Dr. Brenner is, confusing Eleven, who believed Brenner to be dead. Kali encourages Eleven to kill the man, but Eleven can't go through with it after finding out that the man's children are in the next room over. Kali then decides to kill the man herself, but Eleven tears the gun out of her hand. Axel finds out the man's children have already called the police, who arrive and force Kali's gang to flee to their hideout. In the van, Kali angrily tells Eleven that if ''she'' doesn't want to kill someone from the Lab, that's her choice; but not to interfere with Kali doing the same.

Of course, the one time she ''isn't'' paying attention (when she gets into a short argument with Dottie about not joining the poker game) is when she misses the SWAT team moving toward the building right under her vantage point.

Eleven has a vision of Mike and Hopper at the lab as the demodogs spring their trap. Police arrive at the hideout, forcing the gang to try and make a break for it. Kali holds off the police with a massive illusion, but when Eleven refuses to escape with them Kali's powers begin to falter. Eleven and the gang go their separate ways, with Eleven returning to Hawkins to save her friends.

* CrashingDreams: Eleven has a dream wherein somebody touches her shoulder from behind. She wakes and see that it was Kali's touch that filtered into the dream.

* EmotionalPowers: Kali teaches Eleven how to use her emotions, anger in this case, to strengthen her powers on demand in a TimeToUnlockMoreTruePotential session during some downtime.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: El realizes this when she sees a picture of her potential victim's children, making her unwilling to kill him.
* EvilMakeover: Kali's gang give Eleven a makeover to look like them, complete with ExcessiveEvilEyeshadow.

* JustFollowingOrders: A man who used to watch over Kali and Eleven begs for mercy and claims that the reason he hurt Kali so much was because he was just following orders.

* TheQuincyPunk: Most notably, Kali and Axel (right down to the ridiculous Mohawk). Lampshaded later when Hopper sees El's new look.

* MeaningfulName: Kali is a dark and violent goddess in Hindu mythology, who is often to blame for encouraging Shiva's destructive and antisocial tendencies. At the same time, she's also considered to be a liberator.

* TattooedCrook: Most of Kali's gang are heavily inked.

* ADayInTheLimelight: For Eleven, and for Kali to a lesser extent.
* AFriendInNeed: Eleven decides to go back to her friends when she realizes they're in danger.

* ChekhovsArmy: While this episode provides some CharacterDevelopment for El, most of its plot (such as the introduction of Kali's crew and their mission, and TheReveal that Dr. Brenner may not be dead after all) has little to with the events of this season, serving as a setup for future seasons.
