* TheBadGuyWins: Despite his best efforts, Ozpin fails to prevent Cinder from killing Amber and becoming the next Fall Maiden.

* WhamEpisode: By the end of this episode Neo is in an unknown status, Roman was eaten by a Grimm, Velvet's weapon was finale revealed, Weiss unlocks her summoning powers, Blake was stabbed by Adam, Adam cuts Yangs arm off, and Cinder kills Amber and takes her power thus becoming the Fall Maiden. On top of all this the episode ends with Ozpin preparing to fight Cinder

* BreakingSpeech: Roman tries one on a relatively defenseless Ruby. It... [[SwallowedWhole doesn't go as planned]].

** Ruby does not do any better against Neo than her sister did. After Neo leaves the scene, an unarmed Ruby gets thoroughly beaten by Torchwick.

** Yang wanted to be a Huntress not to be a hero, but for the adventure. She stated that she wants, "a life where I won't know what tomorrow will bring." [[BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor She's got it now; Vale has descended into chaos]]. Her fiery, straightforward approach to battle has cost her dearly; there was no last-minute save from her mother this time, and her fighting style will never be the same again.

* SingleStrokeBattle: How the fight between Yang and Adam plays out. Adam [[AnArmAndALeg wins]].

* AnArmAndALeg: Yang has her arm cut off by Adam.

* GoryDiscretionShot: Blake's torso isn't clearly seen after Adam stabs her there, making it ambiguous as to whether her Aura absorbed it and she was just pained, or if she was maimed like Yang was.

* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes / VillainousFriendship: The first time we ever see Roman show concern for someone other than himself is when Neo is sent flying off the airship. He also seems to become noticeably more merciless and angry after this happens.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: If you look closely at the Knight's arm Weiss summons, you can see it's actually the right arm. Now look at which arm Adam cuts off of Yang.

* LetsGetDangerous: The moment that Ozpin readies himself to fight Cinder, it's clear that he's transitioned from the wise headmaster to a veteran Huntsman who's ready to throw down.

* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: After accomplishing the goal she's been working on over the course of three whole volumes, plus however many years she spent working on it before that, and finally getting the full power of the Fall Maiden, Cinder doesn't seem very happy about it. Instead, as she confronts Ozpin and comments on his "arrogance," she actually seems...angry.

** Neo can't open her umbrella while on the outside of the ship, as the winds would drag it, and her, right into freefall. So Ruby opens it for her. The episode also uses this to demonstrate how each of Team RWBY [[CharacterDevelopment have developed over time]]:
** The episode title is a callback to Ruby's motivations in ''The Shining Beacon, Pt. 2''. She heroically launches herself up to the hijacked ship and takes on Roman and Neo herself. However, she's completely outmatched and nearly killed. Roman not only mocks her idealism, but is stopped by a Grimm, ''not'' her. At the same time, however, she's gotten smarter in her actions and she refuses to lay down, thus she's taken Qrow's words to heart.
** Weiss was originally driven by upholding her family name, overly focused on little details in combat, and was utterly self-centered. However, she was able activate her summoning Semblance by ''selflessly'' rushing in to defend another student - a Faunus, no less - and did so entirely on instinct.

** Roman gives an angry and frustrated rant to Ruby on the airship surrounded by flying Grimm. Note that Grimm are attracted to negative emotions. [[SwallowedWhole Guess what happens to Torchwick.]]
* SenselessSacrifice: Nora [[TakingTheBullet throws herself]] in front of a Atlesian Paladin for Ren, whose too distracted at the sight of her being hurt to move out of the way of the Paladin's second strike.

* WhamLine: While talking down on Ozpin, Cinder makes it unambiguously clear that she is working for another woman.
--> '''Cinder:''' This whole time. Right beneath our feet. ''She'' was right about you. Such arrogance.
* WhamShot:
** An arrow abruptly slays Autumn during the Maiden power transfer, sending it all to Cinder.
** When Adam slashes Yang, the colors fade, but just enough to show silhouettes of what happened: Yang losing her arm.

The battle for Beacon continues as Ruby, now on top of the ship that Roman Torchwick has hijacked, confronts both him and Neo. Although both of them get the upper hand at first, Ruby pulls off clever tricks that end up with Neo flying off the ship, leaving her final fate currently unknown. While Roman then fights Ruby to the point of victory, he is suddenly eaten by a Griffin and presumably killed. Ruby then defeats the Griffin and causes the ship to crash, while she uses Cresent Rose to make a safe landing. In Vale, Ironwood ends up surviving his crash and joins Qrow and Glynda on the battlefield. Meanwhile at Beacon, the remaining students struggle to take down Atlesean Paladins, until Velvet steps in and utilizes her weapon/semblance, which turns out to copy the powers and abilities of all the weapons and their wielders she takes a photo of. With the aide of Weiss - who manages to further grasp her summoning to call upon the blade of the giant Knight she fought long ago - the students gain the upper-hand against the Paladins.

* CharacterDeath:
** Roman Torchwick is eaten alive by a Griffin, which is sent crashing into the ship's deck just moments later.
** Amber is shot through the heart by Cinder's arrow, and her Maiden powers are all sent to the latter instead of Pyrrha, going in line with an earlier statement that Maiden powers are transferred according to the dying holder's last remembered person.

* CurbStompBattle: Adam makes short, brutal work of both Blake and Yang, and came within moments of killing them.

** When Adam slowly walks to pursue an injured Blake carrying an unconscious Yang, a Creep tries to jump on him, only to get sliced without Adam even bothering to look at it.

* YouCantThwartStageOne: Ruby manages to destroy the airship that was being used to control Ironwoods militia, thus deactivating all of the robots and mechs attacking the Huntsmen. Unfortunately though, Cinder is still able to complete her ultimate plan [[TheBadGuyWins and kill Amber to absorb the rest of her power]].

** Torchwick's reaction to finding out that Ruby (of all people) has boarded his hijacked cruiser.
