Ash and friends continue on their journey through the Orange Islands. While admiring his Badges a trainer named Tad finds Ash. He heard about him from Rudy and would like to challenge him after hearing about his offensive style. Ever eager Ash accepts and the battle begins. Ash starts with Pikachu to Tad's Poliwrath. Despite the type advantage Pikachu loses and Ash believes shear power can win and sends out Charizard. Charizard still won't listen and fights without Ash. Tad's Poliwrath freezes Charizard and he says he'll accept a rematch if he wants one. Ash, Misty, Pikachu and Tracey spend the night thawing and warming up Charizard. While being cared for Charizard remembers all that they have gone through. In the morning Ash wakes up to see Charizard fully recovered. While celebrating Team Rocket attacks and captures Pikachu. Ash gives chase and to his surprise Charizard helps to save Pikachu. Tad arrives and sees that Charizard is loyal to Ash and agrees to a rematch. Now working together Ash and Charizard defeat Tad and Poliwrath. After saying goodbye to Tad the heroes continue on their journey.

* OutOfOrder: This episode aired before "[[Recap/PokemonS2E23MistyMeetsHerMatch Misty Meets Her Match]]" in the US. Ash has three badges in this episode, but the US viewers didn't see him win the third one until that episode aired.
