Jessica arrives to testify at a plagiarism trial, and quickly ends up with pain in the neck when she lands in the hospital with a fractured foot. Before the cast on her leg has a chance to harden, she's embroiled in the unhealthier aspects of the hospital, such as the bitter rivalry between two doctors, Kenyon and Ellison. The situation intensifies when the head of the hospital turns up dead on his estate and the officer on the case turns to Jessica for help.
!!This episode includes examples of the following tropes:
* AmoralAttorney: For all his pretty talk, the lawyer in whose case Jessica arrives to testify doesn't really seem to care about principles so much as money. He pushes Jessica to sue when she gets knocked over and injured in the airport, ignoring her statements that it was an accident and not worth mentioning. He doesn't want to defend Nurse Wells until the hospital agrees to foot the bills; he mentions getting Dr. Sam off on four malpractice suits and he tells Jessica at the end he intends to defend the killers she exposed while in the hospital.
* DecemberDecemberRomance: Barney and Sadie, two of the older patients at the hospital, strike up a romance during Jessica's visit. Jessica asks Nurse Wells to tell her how they're doing.
* {{Hypochondriac}}:
** Barney Ogden, one of the patients, seems to bother the doctors regularly. Nurse Wells admits there's nothing wrong with him that would turn up on an exam.
** Melanie Barker, an elder SouthernBelle, irritates her son Billy Don with her visits to Dr. Sam. She retorts that the money comes out of her holdings, so he shouldn't care.
* ImADoctorNotAPlaceholder: When Jessica asks Dr. Kenyon if he thinks Dr. Ellison is the killer, Kenyon says he's a doctor, not a police officer. Of course, it rings a little hollow given that he's been slinging mud at him.
* INeverSaidItWasPoison: Jessica only gets the knowledge to nab Dr. Kenyon thanks to him telling Sadie she can't have any more coffee. Dr. Sam left that instruction on an answering machine message to Nurse Horton, who didn't listen to it until the afternoon of the day the police announced Dr. Sam's murder. A logical other way he could have heard it was if he had been in the house ready to shoot Dr. Sam while he was recording it.
* UptightLovesWild: Sadie, a wheelchair-bound older woman who shares the hospital with Jessica, [[DrinkOrder loves coffee]], offers to race her up and down the halls, and generally loves life. Barney is a gloomy hypochrondriac who Sadie compares to her dead worrywart husband. They end up in a romantic relationship.
