* BittersweetEnding: Although the raft project has experienced a major setback and Jin and Sun's relationship seems to have fallen apart, Sun is free from Jin's overprotective attitude, Jin and Michael bury the hatchet and work together on a new raft, and Shannon, deciding to grow up, happily pursues a romance with Sayid.

* CallBack: Locke brings up the Others' acts of [[Recap/LostS01E11AllTheBestCowboysHaveDaddyIssues abduction]] and [[Recap/LostS01E15Homecoming murder]] while blaming them for the burning of the raft.

-->'''Jin:''' ''[in Korean]'' I just saved your life.

* ObliviouslyEvil: Jin is initially totally in the dark about his father-in-law's grim reputation; he's very confused about why Byung Han is so relieved and apologetic to receive a verbal warning instead of a beating. It isn't until Jin is an assassin to Byung Han's house that he realizes exactly what kind of man he's working for and what is expected of him.

* TheAtoner:
** Walt volunteers to help Michael rebuild the raft to try and make up for having burned the first one.
** Jin steps up to help Michael build a new raft to make up for their past antagonism.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: Downplayed; Sun's father is introduced as a stern and intimidating man who, nevertheless, seems to have his daughter's best interests in mind. The longer Jin works for him, however, the more it becomes clear that Mr. Paik is a ruthless criminal who has no qualms about using his daughter's beloved husband as a thug, no matter what damage it does to their marriage.

* CharacterDevelopment: With some encouragement from Locke, Shannon opts to grow up a bit and stop caring about what Boone thinks of her, leading her to pursue her romance with Sayid.
-->'''Shannon:''' [[MeaningfulEcho Everyone gets a new life on this Island.]] I'd like to start now.

* DramaticIrony: Sun had intended to leave Jin because of his work for her father; unknown to her, Jin intended for the watch delivering errand to be the last job he did for Mr. Paik and planned to run away with her to America.

* {{Foreshadowing}}: Walt asks Locke if he has a dad, which he deflects by saying "Everyone's got a dad." He also says he's "not cool."

to:

* {{Fanservice}}: Sun in a bikini.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: Walt asks Locke if he has a dad, which he deflects by saying "Everyone's "[[MathematiciansAnswer Everyone's got a dad.dad]]." He also says he's "not cool."" Walt, seeing Locke's discomfort, doesn't ask any further.

Added DiffLines:

* {{Irony}}: Michael's main motive in building the raft is to get Walt off the Island; Walt burns the first raft because, having moved so much in his life, he feels at home on the Island and doesn't ''want'' to leave.

Added DiffLines:

* MyGodWhatHaveIDone:
** Seeing Michael's rage when he believes Jin burned the raft, Walt starts trying to put the blaze out himself to make up for having started the fire, and he's clearly feeling guilty for the rest of episode.
** Jin is clearly disgusted with himself after beating Byung Han in front of his family; after getting home and arguing with Sun, he breaks down in front of a mirror.
* NecessarilyEvil: Jin beats Byung Han in front of his wife and daughter, but the alternative was to allow an assassin to murder the man, and Jin is sick with himself over the whole thing.
* NotHelpingYourCase: When Sun, the one person to whom he could actually communicate his innocence, asks if he burned the raft, Jin, rather than (honestly) proclaim his innocence, storms off jealously because she mentioned Michael. He then runs off into the jungle, making himself look even ''more'' guilty.
* NotWhatItLooksLike: After the raft burns, Sun finds Jin nursing a burn on his hand and believes that he did start the fire. As it turns out, Jin got the burn trying to ''extinguish'' the blaze.
* OhCrap:
** Byung Han, the man Jin is supposed to threaten, is visibly terrified when Jin mentions that he works for Mr. Paik, and remains so until Jin simply delivers a verbal message. The terror returns when Jin comes back to his house, this time ''to'' beat him.
** When Jin sees the man in a white suit putting a silencer on a gun, he finally realizes exactly what kind of message Mr. Paik wanted him to deliver.

Added DiffLines:

* OneLastJob: Jin intended the errand to deliver the watches to be his final job for Mr. Paik, planning to take Sun and run away to America after it was done.
* OutDamnedSpot: Jin furiously scrubs Byung Han's blood from his hands after beating the man, breaking down over what he has done.
* PersonalHateBeforeCommonGoals: Subverted; Michael believes that Jin burned the raft to spite him for interfering in his and Sun's marital spat, but it later becomes clear that Jin didn't burn the raft; he was, in fact, the first one to notice the blaze and tried to put it out, and while calming things down, Locke points out how unreasonable it is that Jin would take a personal grievance out on the survivors' main chance of getting off the Island. It was actually Walt who burned the raft, not wanting to leave the Island.
* PetTheDog: Despite his antagonism with Michael, Jin tried to extinguish the burning raft. Him stepping up to help Michael build a new raft marks the end of their animosity and the beginning of their friendship.
* RewatchBonus: Walt starts trying to extinguish the fire when he sees how angry Michael is about it; on a rewatch, it becomes clear that guilt over destroying his father's work just hit the kid.
* TheScapegoat: Locke breaks up Michael's attack on Jin by presenting the Others as a much more reasonable guilty party, as at least one of them has infiltrated and attacked the survivors before. Locke later makes it clear that he knows Walt burned the raft.
* ShoutOut: Sawyer mentions ''Literature/LordOfTheFlies'' while threatening Jin.
* SpeakOfTheDevil: When Jack asks who took the third of four available seats on Michael's raft, Sawyer turns up as if on cue.
* StunnedSilence: ''Everyone'' stops and stares when Sun shouts [[InternalReveal in English]] for Michael to stop beating Jin.
* WhamLine: "Why did you burn the raft, Walt?"

In flashbacks, Jin gets a job working for Mr. Paik, Sun's father. Mr. Paik promotes him to "special assistant", and orders him to go to the house of an important Korean government official and tell him that he is displeased with his decision to close one of his factories. Jin does so, but Mr. Paik is furious when the official does not change his mind, and sends Jin back with a hitman who will show Jin how to "deliver a message". To prevent the hitman killing the official, Jin savagely beats him in front of his family. He returns home, dodging Sun's questions about what he has done, and cries in front of the bathroom mirror.

Jin's right eye scans the beach, looking for his wife. He sees her swimming in a bikini and rushes to cover her with a towel. They begin arguing loudly in Korean. Several survivors look on uncomfortably, wondering if they should intervene. Michael tries to defend Sun, but she slaps him for his effort, shocking even Jin. Alone, Jin asks Sun if there is anything going on between her and Michael. Sun denies this, but Jin seems unconvinced.

----
Sun and Jin are married. In a private moment before their reception, the happy couple talk together. Sun says she wishes Jin's father could have seen this day. Jin, again, hestitates before responding. Before their honeymoon, Jin must devote six months to "management training." Sun is wary of this duty to her father, but Jin places a white flower in her hair and promises her the honeymoon she's always dreamed of.

----
Sun approaches Michael while he at work on his raft. She apologizes for slapping him. She tries to explain that the slap was meant to protect Michael from Jin's jealousy, but Michael will not listen. At the golf course, Jin takes his anger out on some rocks. Hurley offers to go fishing with Jin, but he ignores him. Shannon suggests to Sayid that they spend an evening away from the other survivors. At the beach, Sayid is impressed with Shannon's knot-tying skills as she helps out on the raft. She attributes this to having dated guys who liked sailing. The two flirt for a minute, and Shannon suggests that they spend a night alone together. Walt helps Michael with the raft, and Michael tells him about all the things he's going to show him when they get to New York. Walt seems ambivalent about this, and runs off with Vincent. Jack is impressed with Michael's progress, and tells him that there's a lot of talk going around about who will be joining him and Walt on the raft. Michael informs him that there's only four spots available in total, and one of them's already been taken, by Sawyer, of all people.

At night, Sun discusses Jin with Kate, who wonders how Jin could have changed from the tender husband Sun describes. They are distracted by the survivors running toward Michael's raft, which is on fire. Everyone tries to put out the flames, except for Locke, who watches with a neutral expression. Michael, furious, blames Jin, who is nowhere to be seen. Michael rounds on Sun and demands to know where he is. Jack and Kate try to calm Michael down, but he is far from alone in suspecting Jin. Sun finds Jin up at the caves, with burns on his hands. She is shocked and berates him for ruining Michael's attempts to get them off the Island, but Jin grows angry and storms off at the mention of Michael's name.

----
Jin is called to Mr. Paik's office. He begins to apologize for a recent mistake, but to his surprise, Mr. Paik does not intend to reprimand him. Instead, he promotes him to "special assistant," and Mr. Paik personally gives him the task of communicating his displeasure to Byung Han, the Korean Secretary for Environmental Safety, over a recent factory closing by the agency. Han is terrified by Jin's appearance. When Jin simply tells him of Paik's displeasure and begins to leave, the man is overjoyed. Jin is very confused by the man's extreme reactions. He takes a Shar Pei puppy from his daughter and forces it on Jin, asking him to tell Mr. Paik he is sorry.

----
At the beach, Sayid comes to Boone to say he and Shannon may become more than friends. Boone is belligerent and sarcastic. When Boone becomes aggressive, and Sayid says he was not asking Boone's permission. Boone then tells Sayid that she has a thing for "guys who can take care of her" and will leave him wants she gets she wants from him. Sayid seems unnerved by his words.

In the jungle, Jin wakes up after sleeping against a tree. He goes to soothe his hand in the river. He is attacked by Sawyer, who thinks he is responsible for burning the raft. At the beach, Shannon is at work building herself a shelter, and asks for Sayid's help. Sayid is aloof, and Shannon instantly realizes he's been talking to Boone. Shannon angrily goes to confront him. She finds Locke dissecting a tree frog, and asks where Boone is. Locke doesn't know, and he resists her attempts to draw him into the conflict. He challenges Shannon to do as she likes without worrying about Boone's reaction. He tells her that all Boone wants is her attention, and she shouldn't rise to his bait. Sawyer marches a bound Jin through the jungle, threatening him.

----
Sun prepares a fancy dinner for Jin, but Mr. Paik interrupts. Jin turns off his phone, but their house phone rings moments later. Mr. Paik orders Jin to drive a man to Byung Han's house, where Jin will "be shown how to deliver a message." Jin sees that the man plans to kill the secretary, and on arrival at Han's house, he rushes in ahead of the hitman. He beats Han in front of his family while the hitman looks on. Jin tells Han to open the factory the next day, but whispers to him that he just saved his life. He then walks out, telling the hitman Han "got the message." He arrives home, and immediately rushes in to clean the blood off his hands, while Sun watches on, concerned. Sun questions him pointedly and slaps him. He tells her that he does whatever he father tells him, and he does it for both of them. She leaves and Jin tries to continue his cleaning but stops and begins to weep as he stares in the mirror at himself.

----
Sawyer dumps Jin on the beach. The survivors gather around while Michael begins to interrogate Jin, and Jack tries to calm him down. Jin begins speaking Korean, and Michael demands that Sun translate. Sun is silent, and Michael attacks Jin and starts punching him over and over, while Sayid and Sawyer prevent Jack from getting involved. Finally, Sun screams out in English for Michael to stop and leave Jin alone, because he didn't burn the raft. Everyone, including Jin, is stunned to realize Sun can speak English. Sun explains that the raft was already on fire, and Jin burned his hands trying to put it out. Locke speaks up for Jin, saying that he has no motive to stop the survivors from getting home, and blames the Others for the raft's destruction. Jin angrily walks away, leaving Sun alone at the beach.

The raft is a total loss. Michael begins to succumb to despair, but he sees Walt's reaction and stops. He promises Walt that they will build a better raft, and Walt promises to help his father. Meanwhile, Jin and Sun argue as Jin packs to move to the beach away from Sun. She tries to talk to him in Korean in an attempt to talk their growing problems out. She tries to ask why he didn't tell her he didn't burn the raft. Jin ignores everything she says, until she calls out, in English, that she was going to leave him, and that he changed her mind. She says she wants to start over.

----
Jin goes to visit his father, a simple fisherman, who is very much alive and overjoyed to see him. Jin confesses to having been ashamed of him, and begs his forgiveness, but his father embraces his long-estranged son. He then tells his father of his marital problems and that he can't explain what her father is making him do because he doesn't want Sun to hate her father. Jin's father advises him to make his next project for Mr. Paik (delivering watches to Paik associates in Sydney and Los Angeles) his last. "Go to America," says the old man. "Save your marriage."

----
Jin, remembering his father's words, tells Sun that it's too late, and leaves. Sun cries, and Jin suppresses a sob as he walks away. At the beach, a teary Shannon approaches Sayid by the fire and kisses him. He asks her what that was for, and she echoes Locke's words to her that everyone gets a new life here on the island. At the caves, Locke approaches Walt for a game of TabletopGame/{{Backgammon}}. Walt brags to Locke about Hurley owing him $83,000. Locke brings up the subject of fathers. He says that his own is "not cool." He then asks Walt [[WhamLine why he burned the raft]], promising that he won't tell anyone. Walt confesses that he didn't want to move anymore; he likes the Island. Locke says that he likes it there too. The next morning, on the beach, Jin approaches Michael, who is salvaging what he can from the wreck. He has bamboo. He says a single English word to Michael: "Boat." Michael nods in appreciation. Sayid and Shannon, share some fruit together. Meanwhile, Sun, finally free from her husband, removes her towel to reveal a bikini. Charlie and Claire sit on the beach together, while Hurley listens to his CD player, until it loses battery power. Disappointed, he says, "Son of a bitch" and throws the device into the sand.

!!'''Tropes'''
* AesopAmnesia: Considering his aggressive reaction to Sayid mentioning that he and Shannon may become a couple, it seems the lesson Boone learned about getting over his obsession with her in "[[{{Recap/LostS01E13HeartsAndMinds}} Hearts And Minds]]" didn't take.
* BookEnds: The episode starts and ends with Sun walking into the water in a bikini. The first time, Jin rushes to cover her up, while the second, she marches proudly into the ocean, free of his oversight.
* TheDogWasTheMastermind: It turns out that Walt was the one responsible for burning the raft. It's safe to say nobody except Locke would have seen that coming.
* FreezeFrameBonus: Hurley appears on the news on the TV in the background during Jin's first visit to Han's house, foreshadowing his backstory as revealed in the next episode.
* GoodParents: Jin's father is the first example of a good father we've seen in any of the main characters' flashbacks so far, warmly embracing his son even after Jin admits to being ashamed of him and giving him some sound advice on how to save his marriage.
* InternalReveal: The rest of the survivors find out that Sun speaks English.
* OnceMoreWithClarity: The flashback of Jin washing blood off his hands and refusing to answer Sun's questions about the nature of his work for her father from "[[{{Recap/LostS01E06HouseofTheRisingSun}} House of the Rising Sun]]" is shown again, this time with the context of what Jin had been doing before this and including a brief scene of Jin breaking down after Sun leaves the room, horrified by what he has done.
