Added DiffLines:

* PoorCommunicationKills: Narrowly averted; the Doctor didn't tell the Brigadier that he genuinely intended to set off a nuclear meltdown to force the Silurians back into cryostasis, and the Brigadier and Liz in turn didn't get the chance to tell the Doctor that the Silurians disabled the lifts to the surface, trapping them with a reactor that's about to explode. Fortunately, the Doctor is able to figure out a way to stop the nuclear reaction without blowing the whole place up.

Added DiffLines:

** In addition to the story still lacking the musical "sting" that leads into the end credits, it's the only Third Doctor story that employs a fade-out on the end credits music (as was done in the First and Second Doctor eras), rather than letting the music come to an end, which had been accomplished on the previous story by shortening and cross-fading the music. The following story saw the debut of both the "sting" and a shortened version of the end credits music.

Added DiffLines:

* NoPlansNoPrototypeNoBackup: Subverted; the Doctor did write down the formula for his successful plague cure... along with those for his ''un''successful attempts at a cure, forcing Liz to work out which is the one they need to mass-produce after the Silurians kidnap him.

Added DiffLines:

* UncertainDoom: Miss Dawson is mentioned as being an early victim of the Silurian plague, but it's never stated whether or not the Doctor found the cure in time to save her.

** Despite most fans who started watching ''Doctor Who'' pre-2005 likely remembering them as such, the Silurians' depiction counts as this, with inhuman faces, guttural, modulated voices, very animated mannerisms, and the ability to project a heat ray that can either subdue or kill others from their third eye. "[[Recap/DoctorWhoS21E1WarriorsOfTheDeep Warriors of the Deep]]" depicted them with a mostly similar design, but instead gave them high-pitched voices, slower and more lumbering movements, and got rid of their heat ray, with the third eye instead being used to indicate which of them was speaking. The Eleventh Doctor's first season would give the Silurians a ''major'' overhaul, with human-like faces, voices, and mannerisms, which has stuck in the years since.

Added DiffLines:

* GodzillaThreshold: The threat of the Silurians rendering Earth uninhabitable is enough for the Doctor to have Liz set off an overload of the nuclear reactor, and he confirms afterwards to the Brigadier that he wasn't bluffing and that the reactor really is going to explode. Unfortunately, no-one had the opportunity to tell the Doctor that the Silurians had disabled the lifts to the surface, forcing him to figure out a way to shut down the reactor.
* GoingCritical: Downplayed; while the Doctor talks about the reactor potentially turning into a "massive nuclear bomb" early in the story, when he deliberately sets up a meltdown in the climax the characters talk as if the explosion will kill anyone in the immediate vicinity, but won't be powerful enough to cause any real damage to the nearby Silurian base, which the Brigadier later blows up with conventional explosives.

* EarlyInstallmentWeirdness:
** The rest of the UNIT regulars beyond the Brigadier and Liz still aren't present at this stage, resulting in Captain Hawkins filling the role that Benton or Yates would occupy in other Third Doctor stories.

Added DiffLines:

* SacrificialLion: Captain Hawkins fills the same kind of role that you might see Benton or Yates take on in later Third Doctor stories, which can make it quite the shock when one of the Silurians kills him midway through the final episode.

The only Doctor Who TV story to be officially titled "Doctor Who and...", discounting brief references to the character as "Doctor Who" in an episode of [[Recap/DoctorWhoS2E8TheChase "The Chase"]] (specifically the title of part 5, "The Death of Doctor Who") and the next episode preview for [[Recap/DoctorWhoS3E9TheSavages "The Savages"]]. Legend has it this was due to an error by the first-time director in having the script prefix added to the onscreen titles (the title format stuck for the Target Literature/DoctorWhoNovelisations, and was parodied by Creator/BigFinish Productions a few times). While [[IAmNotShazam "Doctor Who" isn't his name]] (not that anyone told [[Recap/DoctorWhoS3E10TheWarMachines WOTAN]]), the actor was credited as playing "Dr. Who" until 1970 and "Doctor Who" until 1981 (and again in 2005), and the character is frequently referred to in outside media as "Doctor Who" even to this day (likely to avoid confusion with other fictional doctors), so the WordOfGod on the subject is clearly a bit suspect. On another point of trivia, this was also the very last ''Doctor Who'' serial to be filmed in TheSixties; location filming began in November of 1969. [[Recap/DoctorWhoS7E3TheAmbassadorsOfDeath The next serial]] would be the first to actually be taped in the same decade it was aired, starting location filming in January of 1970.
