* As Peter Parker inherited his powers from his parents in ''Fanfic/BornOfHellsKitchen'' instead of gaining them through spider bite, he certainly can't be called a mutate in this iteration. He would be more akin to a mutant, but there's no indication of others mutants existing in the continuity so it stays ambiguous.

* Jinx in the DC comics is a bald Indian woman. Jinx from the 2003 ''WesternAnimation/TeenTitans'' cartoon (and works that reuse that design, such as ''WesternAnimation/TeenTitansGo'' and ''WebAnimation/DCSuperHeroGirls'') is [[YouDontLookLikeYou completely different looking]]. She has pale ''[[AmazingTechnicolorPopulation grey]]'' skin and pink AnimeHair. She isn't clearly identifiable as any ethnicity.

* ''ComicStrip/{{Dilbert}} has the character of Asok, the naive young work experience intern who isn't even getting paid for what he does. Asok was originally intended to be an East Asian character to lampshade his ethnicity, its reputation for diligent conscientious hard work, and how this eventually becomes corrupted by contact with Americans like Wally and the corrosive effect of working at a succession of nonsensical non-jobs for the PointyHairedBoss. Unfortunately, the monochrome nature of newspaper publication meant this subtle point was lost (Asok's face and hands do become darker in the colour reprints) and the character was taken to be a white man with an odd name.

* In ''RWBY'', the {{mukokuseki}} {{animesque}} art-style and ConstructedWorld makes it impossible to pin most characters as one ethnicity or another. ''Fanfic/RWBYScars'' goes for a FantasyCounterpartCulture approach, to a degree. For example, everything about Blake, from her character design to her real name ([[spoiler:"Hozuki Blake"]]), imply she's at minimum the equivalent of half-Japanese.

* [[Characters/GenerationX Monet St. Croix]] is the most controversial example in [[Creator/MarvelComics Marvel]]. When she first appeared in Phalanx Covenant / Generation Next, she was black, ranging from [[https://i.imgur.com/uA6XcwE.jpg light brown]] to [[https://imgur.com/oGctnLR caramel & darker brown]]. When she went to ''ComicBook/GenerationX'', she [[https://i.imgur.com/y6gMcNS.jpg started off more ambiguous for the first 9 chapters]], and ping-ponged ever since. She was usually depicted as [[https://i.imgur.com/TKWt6i8.jpg black]], sharing the skin tone range with Synch. But she did have instances of going back to [[https://ic.pics.livejournal.com/silverfang2/29185537/1258678/1258678_900.png lighter & more ambiguous appearances]], which may be case of ButNotTooBlack. In the 2006 ''ComicBook/XFactor'' series, she was officially changed to [[https://ic.pics.livejournal.com/silverfang2/29185537/1227809/1227809_900.png more white]], and remained that way for most of the series. Toward the end, she was depicted with darker complexion that ranged from light tan to darker tan & brown. During this period, she could appear [[https://i.imgur.com/jFYorjU.png black]] or more [[https://i.imgur.com/tALGauk.jpg European]], depending on your interpretation & how artists depict her facial features. WordOfGod said many fans complained early on, asking why Monet was white all of a sudden when she wasn't in Generation X, and PAD had her darkened later in the series as a result, though not still without complaints. In 2015 ''ComicBook/UncannyXMen2015'' & ''ComicBook/GenerationX2017'', she went back to [[https://i.imgur.com/XhjFOBa.png being]] [[https://i.imgur.com/HlRGzWr.png black]] in the respective runs. But the flip-flopping started again in Pak's ''ComicBook/WeaponX2017''. Many times, she was depicted as [[https://i.imgur.com/dbObZql.png black]] with a noticeable brown complexion that contrasted the other characters. But just as often, she was depicted looking [[https://i.imgur.com/JjdFLhG.png white]] with little to no difference between her and Sabretooth or Deathstrike. Whether this is a race-change, or the colorist lightening her skin as a result of light source is questionable. Post-Weapon X she had two cameo appearances in ''ComicBook/UncannyXMen2018'' and ''X-Men Black: Mojo'' where she is [[https://i.imgur.com/8LRpb99.png darker than she's been depicted since Generation X.]] Her next major appearance will be in ''ComicBook/JonathanHickmansXMen''. She's been shown on two covers for '''House of X'''. The [[https://ic.pics.livejournal.com/silverfang2/29185537/1276927/1276927_900.jpg first cover she appeared]] has a yellow light shining over the cast, so a read on her complexion is difficult. However, [[https://ic.pics.livejournal.com/silverfang2/29185537/1282158/1282158_900.jpg the following issue's cover]] shows her with a clear brown complexion that contrasts her white teammates. The Cover artist & colorist will also be doing the book's interiors. Thus far, it appears she isn't white this time around, but whether it will stay consistent from here out remains to be seen. Hickman has plans for the X-Franchise that he says will last some years to come. He also listed Monet as one of his top five favorite mutants, being a fan of her since her Generation X days. As a result, he may demand that her coloring stay brown like it started, or it could continue to fluctuate.
** To top things off, Monet's father has race-changed a couple of times, which adds to the confusion. He was introduce & consistently depicted as black in major appearances, but had two cameo showings in the X-Men volumes where he was white. Even Marvel officials on the same book have contradicted one another. David Yardin, who did many of the X-Factor covers, would always depict her as black. In 2018, he made a [[https://twitter.com/davidyardin/status/1037524266017669120 twitter statement that he intentionally did so because she had gotten shades lighter than what she originally was, even calling out Sunspot's whitewashing]].
*** Even her family names change. Her mother's name has been Mere & Jamila.
* Monet’s erstwhile teammate [[Characters/GenerationX Jubilee]] has also been through this - canonically Chinese-American but often drawn by artists who didn't get the memo. Since about the mid-nineties she has been more consistently depicted as firmly Chinese in appearance.

She was usually depicted as [[https://i.imgur.com/z45Emeo.jpg black]]. But she did have instances of going back to [[https://i.imgur.com/lHNSLjI.jpg more ambiguous appearances]], which may be cases of ButNotTooBlack. In 2006's ''ComicBook/XFactor'', she was changed to [[https://i.imgur.com/kUIXgsJ.png more white, or tan European]]. WordOfGod said many fans complained, asking why Monet was white all of a sudden. She stayed mostly in that range from 2006 - early 2015. Since ''ComicBook/UncannyXMen2015'', she's gone back to [[https://i.imgur.com/XhjFOBa.png appearing]] [[https://i.imgur.com/HlRGzWr.png black]]. If she'll stay black this time, or get changed again remains to be seen. The confusion likely from her mother being from Algeria, which, while in Africa, has a majority Arab native population, and a significant white French minority from its days as a French colony. Her father has also race-changed a couple of times. He was introduced as black, and was consistently depicted as such in all major appearances. But two cameo showings in the X-Men volumes had him as white, further confusing the racial issue of the family.
