** [[spoiler:The worst part is how it's clearly gaining more and more control over Vimes in hindsight, even though he doesn't seem to realize it. By the time he reaches Ardent and the other grags, he's barely seconds away from killing them, and if not for his inner Watchman, he would have.]]
* And InUniverse, Vimes [[spoiler: possessed by the Summoning Dark]] rapidly becomes this to the dark dwarfs at the end. At this point Sam Vimes is lost in the dark just as 6:00 pm rolls around and is having a HeroicBSOD at not being able to read to Young Sam. They find him lurching out of the dark and roaring "WHERE IS MY COW" at the top of his lungs. This abomination as far as they're concerned starts killing their heavily armed and armoured bodyguards, all the while screaming what is to them complete nonsense. Eventually it has killed everyone but the unarmed Grags, is covered in blood, and only stops from killing them through sheer willpower. It is then tackled by a werewolf.

* The case of Methodia Rascal, who alternately believed he was being pursued by a giant chicken or that he ''was'' a giant chicken. Given the fuzzy state of reality on the Disc, both were equally valid. His condition was not helped by finding the Device, and when he died his mouth was found to be full of feathers, while there was a note only proclaiming "it comes!"

* Helmclever's death, if only for how quickly and quietly it happens. One second, he's alive, and then Vimes accidentally knocks over the candles. A few seconds of darkness later, he's dead, and the Thud pieces on the board have formed the shape of the Summoning Dark. All because Vimes lost his temper at Colon. And while he certainly didn't touch Helmclever, he didn't touch the dwarf that went after Sam, either...

Added DiffLines:

** The sheer horror of what unleashed the Summoning Dark; the fact that one of the dwarves who was so cruelly betrayed managed to get to the door and the chance of escape -- only to find it barred, and wore himself out clawing at it. Then he drew a curse in his own blood and sat down to wait for death, with the vurms slowly approaching. Meanwhile Helmclever was on the other side of the door, too afraid to open it and wishing the other dwarf would die quicker.

The incident mentioned was brought up in the Fifth Elephant, not Thud.

* It's only a brief anecdote, and mentioned in passing, but apparently one case that Vimes will never, ''ever'' talk about with Sybil involved people who did... ''[[AdultFear something]]'' to a little girl. Something that ended with them taking a shoe as a "trophy". The vagueness invites so many horrific contemplations... especially when we're told that Commander Vimes, notorious for his refusal to kill even the worst criminal if he can avoid it because that's murder rather than justice, went berserk and almost slaughtered them upon finally catching them. If Detritus hadn't been there to stop him, he'd have broken his code without thinking to kill them all. So just ''what did they do?!''
** Ah, the power of [[NothingIsScarier imagination]]...
