* "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi" depicts India as a place where deadly snakes can be ''anywhere'' and the simplest of actions can put you in deadly danger. Most explicitly, the boy in the story stoops to offer Rikki a peanut and Karait, a deadly dust brown snakeling, appears out of the dirt right before him to threaten him. Even Rikki is afraid at this, until he realises he is a mongoose, a furry protector born to confront such threats.

** The short scene with Karait is made all the more nerve-wracking, because the story warns the reader that despite his smaller size, Karait's venom is as potent as Nag's, and Karait's speed and reflexes are much greater than the bigger cobra's. Thus, if the over-confident Rikki fails to kill Karait with his first bite, he ''will'' be killed by Karait's deadly retaliatory bite into Rikki's lip -- or [[EyeScream eye]].

!!Chuck Jones Animated Films
* In general, the animation style and the background music add a ''lot'' of intensity to the already tense scenes from the novels, working wonders to heighten the viewer's mood.
* The introduction to ''Mowgli's Brothers'' includes a sequence of Shere Khan stalking that is both beautiful and terrifying, with the tiger literally nothing but a silhouette made up of his stripes against a solidly colored background, even as the camera gets right up into his face and then [[EatTheCamera dives down his roaring throat]] into total blackness.
* Mowgli using a stolen shirt to pretend to be a ghost and scare Tabaqui is genuinely creepy looking.
* The choice of Creator/OrsonWelles as narrator for the AnimatedAdaptation of ''Rikki-Tikki-Tavi'' also does wonders for turning up the creep factor, particularly in the scenes where Karait makes his appearance or when Chuchundra warns Rikki to listen to the sounds of the house late at night, when Nag or Nagaina may be sneaking in.

** Nag and Nagaina take the fear UpToEleven, they are plotting sneak into the house of Rikki's adopted family and kill them.
** After Nag is killed, his vengeful mate Nagaina abandons stealth and simply walks in on the family when they are having breakfast intent on killing all of them right there. Believing the father killed Nag, she aimed to start by killing the man's son right in front of him.

** And the fact that he spends the entire play eying up Mowgli's ankle-bone (which Shere Khan promised to him when he finally kills him) and basically sees him as a walking talking meal doesn't put anyone at ease...

!! 1967 film
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jungle_book_disneyscreencapscom_7820.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:350:"Everyone runs from Shere Khan."]]
* [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ToG3Q9e7zWE&feature=related Kaa hypnotizing Mowgli]] to be nearly eaten by him, especially with the voice of [[Disney/TheManyAdventuresOfWinnieThePooh Winnie the Pooh]].
** Doubly so in a meta sense when you realize Mowgli's voice actor (Bruce Reitherman) also voiced Christopher Robin. So, if you close your eyes, it sounds like Winnie WANTS TO EAT Christopher Robin.
** Both scenes really show how helpless Mowgli is against Kaa. Even when Mowgli ''knows'' what he's trying to do, [[MoreThanMindControl Kaa manages to get him to relax his guard with just a few words.]] If Bagheera and Shere Khan hadn't been there, Mowgli would have been dead for sure.
** What really turns it scary is when Kaa shakes himself off from the whack Bagheera has given to him, turns to the panther, and tells him what a serious mistake he's just made. If you never thought that voice could be cold and threatening, you were wrong. Not to mention, the implication that he's capable of killing and/or eating ''a panther''.
** Pythons that size ''are'' capable of that. Leopards (any color) are a standard, albeit rare, part of their diet.
* Shere Khan, period. [[KnightOfCerebus Whenever he's around, the comedy ends and you run for your life.]]
** His NoHoldsBarredBeatdown of Baloo during the finale. Even without blood, it's still horrifying to see.
-->'''Shere Khan:''' "I'll kill you for this!"
** Baloo is a little unsettled when Bagheera explains this as another reason he can't keep Mowgli. When jolly old Papa Bear starts getting serious, that's a sign that the cat is ''bad news.''
-->'''Bagheera:''' Sooner or later, Mowgli will meet Shere Khan.\\
'''Baloo:''' [suddenly looks concerned] The tiger? What's he got against the kid?\\
'''Bagheera:''' He hates man with a vengeance, you know that! Because he fears [[HumansAreTheRealMonsters man's gun and man's fire]].\\
'''Baloo:''' But little Mowgli don't have those things!\\
'''Bagheera:''' Shere Khan ''won't'' wait until he does! He'll get Mowgli while he's [[WouldHurtAChild young and helpless]]! Just ''one'' SWIPE!
** In the book, the reason Khan hunts Mowgli is because humans happen to be one of the few preys he can catch because of his bad leg, which in turn makes him a pariah among the animals because killing humans will just make all the other humans go apeshit and attack indiscriminately. In the movie however, Khan is perfectly healthy, he's just a sadistic fuck who hates humans, and on top of that, is an apex predator everyone else is scared shitless of.
