* ArchivePanic: Has an absolutely enormous discography. From his solo work and soundtracks to his work with YMO and collaborations with other artists, he's never stopped working since the 70s.
* BigLippedAlligatorMoment: Sakamoto's early work is generally quite experimental and unmelodic, yet his second release, "Summer Nerves" is a pure party record with funk, disco and reggae influences.

* BreakupBreakout: Outside Japan at least, he is much better known than YMO are, due to his extensive soundtrack work and collaborations with Western artists.

* NoExportForYou: Being a Japanese artist, a lot of his releases were exclusive to Japan, unless he decided to release them elsewhere. Even when he did release albums overseas, tracks were often replaced by others, thus making the original tracklistings exclusive to Japan.
* RemadeForTheExport: Done several times:
** "B-2 Unit" had "Participation Mystique" replaced by "War Head" in the UK.
** "Left Handed Dream" had the four tracks from the Arrangement EP replacing four from the original album (although three of these were simply Japanese versions of the Robin Scott tracks - the ones that weren't being "Living In The Dark" and "The Arrangement" respectively).
** "Ongaku Zukan" was given the English name "Illustrated Musical Encyclopedia" and was substantially altered - it featured only 5 tracks in common with the original (which had 9), plus one from its bonus single (which itself had two other tracks that weren't used). Two Japanese singles recorded months after the album, "Field Work" and "Steppin' Into Asia" were added. The former, featuring Thomas Dolby and sung in English, was the only single from the album and was moderately successful.
** "Beauty" had "Sayonara [Japanese Version]" and "Adagio" replaced by "Sayonara [English Version]" and a single "You Do Me".
** "Heartbeat" had "High Tide [Japanese Version]" replaced by "High Tide [Japanese Version]". In addition, "Tainai Kaiki" was replaced with "Heartbeat (Tainai Kaiki II)" and "Cloud #9", both of which featured David Sylvian and Ingrid Chavez.
** "Sweet Revenge" had remixing and translations done to several tracks, and the tracks "Anna" and "Psychedelic Afternoon" were kept exclusive to the Japanese version.

!!''Tropes featured in Sakamoto's work'':

* AllThereInTheManual: Even though the Japanese title appears on the cover, the Japanese release of Left Handed Dream features the English title on the inner gatefold.

* BreakupBreakout: Outside Japan at least, he is much better known than YMO are, due to his extensive soundtrack work and collaborations with Western artists.
* GenreMashup: "Paradise Lost" combines Japanese traditional music and reggae, made on a Fairlight synth computer, and even featuring steel drums.
* GenreRoulette: He frequently did albums in different genres, but in terms of an album where that is the case, he really went for it on "Heartbeat", as its theme is that it features musical genres from around the world in multiple languages.
* LighterAndSofter: His soundtrack to "The Adventures Of Chatran" is incredibly relaxing, as suits the mood of the movie it was made for.
* LiveAlbum: Several, with "Media Bahn Live" being his first.
* MachineMonotone / CreepyMonotone: Sakamoto used an early text to speech voice on the Futurista track "Milan 1909", which certainly has this effect. It is paired with disconcertingly uncomfortable music, which goes on for over a minute before the voice comes in. This was over a decade before Radiohead were noted for doing the same thing on "Fitter Happier".
* MarketBasedTitle: The movie "Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence" was renamed "Furyo" in some territories, resulting in Sakamoto's soundtrack being renamed that too.
* NoExportForYou: Being a Japanese artist, a lot of his releases were exclusive to Japan, unless he decided to release them elsewhere. Even when he did release albums overseas, tracks were often replaced by others, thus making the original tracklistings exclusive to Japan.

* UpdatedRerelease: The 1990 CD of "The Arrangement" added the a and b sides of two singles released shortly before the album, these being "War Head"/"Lexington Queen" and "Front Line"/"Happy End". With the exception of "Happy End" (a YMO track which was slightly remixed), these three songs all feature Robin Scott's vocals in some capacity, like the ones on the EP.

He has pursued a diverse range of styles both solo and, famously, as a member of Music/YellowMagicOrchestra.
