It mainly revolves around three high school [[GyaruGirl "kogals"]]: [[GenkiGirl Ran Kotobuki]], [[DarkAndTroubledPast Miyu Yamazaki]] and [[NiceGirl Aya Hoshino]], and their "adventures" around Shibuya, Japan.

For the series' 20th anniversary, a one-shot chapter where the girls are transported to Shibuya in TheNewTens was made. Later in 2020 the series announced a sequel from the perspective of the now adult aged gals.

* AbusiveParent: Miyu's mother blames Miyu for her divorce and barely [[ParentalNeglect acknowledges Miyu's presence]]. She gives Miyu enough to live on until the second series where she outright [[ParentalAbandonment abandons Miyu]].

* AlmostKiss: [[spoiler: Between Rei and Aya in a late manga chapter.]]

* TheNotLoveInterest: Otohata and Ran. They met each other in what looks like MeetCute moment, and they've crossed paths since then. Otohata is the only one who can cool Ran down when she gets too wild, and Ran's [[ManicPixieDreamGirl enthusiasm]] all but [[DefrostingIceQueen defrosted him]]. Ran has also opened up emotionally to Otohata more than she has with other people. But in the end, Ran chose to date Tatsuki, and while Otohata briefly had a crush on Ran, he eventually ends up with Aya.

''Super Gals'' (2001-2002) is a 52-episode shoujo anime series, based on the manga ''Gals!'' (1999-2002) by Mihona Fuji, serialzed in ''Ribbon'' magazine that eventually collected into 10 ''tankoubon'' volumes.

* AllegedLookalikes: When the group visits Taiwan for a study tour, Ran was frequently mistaken by the locals for artist Vivian Lin. However, due to their different hairstyle and perpetual expressions, they look [[OnlySixFaces no more alike than the rest of the main cast]].

* GyaruGirl: The main focus of this series is how the three girls enjoy engaging in Gyaru lifestyles.

* SurpriseVirgin: Gals are notoriously known for their promiscuity, but Ran proudly declares herself as a virgin, to the amusement of her rivals.

* EducationMama: Aya's parents. This eventually causes a HeroicBSOD when she is pressured to give up her friends in favor of more studying.

* WeWantOurJerkBack: In volume 3's omake, Ran gets hit on the head and becomes a demure, hardworking, nice girl. Sayo, who believed that Ran was alien possessed, spent the whole episode trying to bring her back to normal, crying about how her rude, wild and HotBlooded self was the sister she loves best. In a subversion though, Sayo seemed to be the only one who is not happy with Ran's change. Everyone else either welcomes it or is indifferent to it.

* BrainyBrunette: Aya, who has brown hair, is the smartest of the gang, being an honour student, and is trying to get into Tokyo University.
* BrilliantButLazy: Ran is noted to have an excellent memory, and ''could'' do well in school if she tries. Problem is, she ''hates'' studying and would rather get stuck in a grade rather than having to learn anything from school.
* BrokenBird: Miyu was this in her gang years, a tough trouble maker due to her parent's divorce and her mom's [[AbusiveParent lack of affection]] to her.

** Yuya is madly in love with Ran and would do everything he can to please her: e.g. helping her with homework or buying her expensive gifts. Unfortunately, Ran is ObliviousToLove, and thought that he was just being nice. Instead, she almost immediately agreed to date Tatsuki when the latter confessed to her after they went to a few parties together.
** Likewise Aya, for Otohata. She spends a lot of time pining after him and trying to get him open up to her. Otohata, being the insensitive type, usually regards her affections with indifference or annoyance. He gets especially impatient with her when she cries, which she does often.

* HiddenDepths:
** Although Tatsuki, at first glance, appears to be just as wild and carefree as Ran, he is very insecure about being "worthy" for her. Especially since Ran hangs out with other guys a lot, and seems to trust Otohata with her feelings more than she does with him.
** The series itself seem to be a comedy/slice-of-life about the ko-gal subculture of Japan, but it also delves into heavy issues like crime, broken families, gang violence and sexual harassment in the workplace.

* LoveEpiphany: Inverted with Yuya. After spending the better part of the series with massive crush on Ran, he finally realizes that he's no longer likes her romantically after seeing her fool around with Tatsuki and did not feel jealous about it.

* RetiredOutlaw: [[spoiler: Miyu]] used to be a violent gang leader, whose behaviour is far worse than Ran's. Now, she's one of the nicest, most modest, and hardworking of the main characters.

* SecondLove: Yuya fell for Ran at first sight but [[spoiler: he ends up with Mami in season two]].
