* DecoyProtagonist: The first chapter follows Cannon, leader of a military team of Space Force cadets sent to investigate an alien planet. He and his crew are abandoned by Captain Bagures and killed off in the first chapter, and the rest of the story follows Gai C, an Initial defending a Space Force ship, the Pendragon cruiser, from the Dargona aliens and the mad ambitions of Bagures.

* IAmLegion: Deronga, which assimilates DNA and memories from all the creatures it infects and kills.
* LukeIAmYourFather: [[spoiler:Gai C's father is Cannon, the DecoyProtagonist who died on the planet Deronga Five Alpha and was absorbed into the Deronga aliens, and his mother is BigBad Camilla Baruges.]]

* StarfishAliens: The Deronga aliens are strange, giant bug-like creatures that have the capability to infect humans via the light from its eyes, which turns them into Deronga as well.

* ActuallyADoombot: [[spoiler:It turns out that the Camilla that was acting for most of the story was actually a robot copy with the original's personality while the real Baruges was hidden in a pod.]]

* BigBad: [[MadScientist Captain/Brigadier General Camilla Bagures]] kicks off the plot by abandoning Cannon and his platoon to die on Deronga Five Alpha, then lures the Deronga virus onto the Space Force ships to have them kill people as a twisted experiment.
* DirtyCoward: In chapter 4, Victor abandons the crew to die at the hands of the aliens while he flees in an escape pod.

* FaceHeelTurn: Victor initially starts out as an ally of the Space Force and the main characters. Then he decides to save himself from the Deronga and abandon the others to die, killing Somaru in the process.

* GravityMaster: Baruges, thanks to a tiny black hole implanted in her womb, can generate a gravity field around herself. She first uses it to utterly destroy a Dergona.
* HumansAreTheRealMonsters: The Deronga aliens killing the Space Force crew are simply predators despite all the people they kill, and [[spoiler:just want a refuge from their dead planet]]. The real villain is Brigadier General Camilla Bagures, a leader of the Space Force who abandoned an entire military team to die on the Deronga planet back when she was a captain, and is the one who implanted the aliens there as part of the titular experiment, making her responsible for all the death and destruction that happens.

* {{Jerkass}}: Victor looks down on the initials, seeing them as just cannon fodder, and badmouths the initials he is working with. He also proves willing to abandon them to save himself.

* WeHaveReserves: Viktor shoots down Somaru, one of his own soldiers, for tying to stop him from abandoning Eluuria, then dismisses her as just another easily replaceable “initial”.
-->My point was that these “initials” are the military’s simple “consumable goods”! They don’t have parents or siblings, and even if they die, no one will complain! To top it all, they don’t even have to be paid! Hahaha!!

''Kodoku Experiment'' is a sci-fi manga written and illustrated by Yukinobu Hoshino, of [[Manga/TwoThousandOneNights 2001 Nights]] fame.

Deronga Five Alpha is a dying unstable planet which, according to studies, used to be a very lush planet with all kinds of different species. The current state of the planet is a horrifying place where vicious carnivorous creatures fight in the “survival of the fittest.” Captain Camilla Bagures, the leader of the research spacecraft, is a cold and cruel woman who, despite the warnings, unnecessarily sends a military team down to the planet for research. The end result was a catastrophe with the team being slaughtered by the creatures on the planet. The leader of the team, Cannon, vows vengeance on Bagures before seemingly dying.

Jump to 20 years later, a spaceship comes near Deronga Five Alpha to see the end of the planet. As the planet explodes, a foreign object attaches itself onto the spaceship. As nothing can survive a planetary explosion, the crew investigates the object only to find out it is one of the creatures from the planet Deronga. As the story progresses, the creature goes into a rage after seeing Bagures, now an extremely important person in the military, on the monitor screen. Could this creature be Cannon? And how do you stop something that can withstand a planetary explosion?
