While he vows ''not'' to use the Irish accent Holmes recommended, he finds himself slipping into it anyway. His attempt to interview the parish priest is interrupted by a local vagrant seeking shelter from the cold. While the priest goes to get soup and blankets, the vagrant asks Watson if he's from Scotland, and when Watson insists upon being Irish, says he travelled all across Ireland in his youth and never heard an accent like that. (Going along with the suggestion of being Scottish probably wouldn't have helped much; when the priest returns with the soup, he says it's a Scotch Broth recipe he learned from his Aberdonian father.)
