When he accidently breaks the train's brake lever, he comes up with a plan B by loading the firebox with coal, then lures the three Sergeants of the Garlyle forces onto the engine. He then uncouples the rest of the train from the engine, and the sergeants are trapped because they can't stop the train (no brake lever) and the train's going too fast for them to jump off.

* This is a major issue with heavier than air aircraft; as air friction is sharply limited, a quick stop with such craft while traveling at high speeds is impossible. Worse still are airplanes; if they lack vertical takeoff and landing capabilities (as most do), they literally CANNOT stop while in the air; if they were to try, they would start falling, resulting in velocity in a different direction. Even when landing (where you ''can'' come to a complete stop, because the ground is supporting your weight, and where you have your wheelbrakes to help you slow down), it still takes a while to stop, especially if the runway is wet or icy.
