He has super speed, but moves in short bursts almost to the point of [[{{FlashStep}} FlashStepping]] because of difficulty stopping and turning. This causes him to run into things and is responsible for his death. Earning him the FanNickname of "Russian Burger Flash Running Into Trees". Due to his country, remuneration, power, and being TooFastToStop.

* This isn't normally a problem for Sonic in the ''SonicTheHedgehog'' series, but in his appearance in ''SuperSmashBros Brawl'', it's the major downpoint of playing as him. All of his attacks have a chance of sling shotting him right off the screen and to death, at least without some practice.
** Not true whatsoever. Other than in midair, during which, by the way, he can't move nearly as fast, the only attack he has that actually "slides" while he's running is his upsmash. And even then, it stops if it hits a ledge.
** Wearing the Bunny Hood, which makes him faster than normal, can make him run so fast he runs faster than a moving platform that just by touching almost always OHKO's you, and then will be able to run off the screen... on the side opposite that of the where 99% of the other kills occur.
*** Oh and in addition, he still skids quite a bit on his various games, if you build up enough speed first.
*** To explain that a bit - the stage in question is a side-view of an [[FZero F-Zero]] race, with the cars as slower-moving platforms the fighting takes place on. The ''road'', on the other hand, is constantly rushing past, and touching it will quickly suck you off to the left (and a quick self-kill due to moving out of bounds). Sonic with the Bunny Hood can run fast enough to outstrip the road's scroll and self-kill off the ''right'' blast line.
** Jigglypuff's Roll Out attack also has this problem, specifically when charged up to maximum in one of the smaller stages, as she tends to speed off the platform with too much momentum to recover and float back. However, if used on the ground, it's simple to reverse direction before going off the edge. In fact, if you hit the stick any time before you're in midair, it will never "skid off" the edge, instead turning on a dime on the corner.
** You're forgetting about Fox, Falco, and Wolf, I've accidentally gone off the edge with those characters so many times using their side specials.
*** Which, incidentally, is the most maddening thing about any stage during the BossRush that is off the ground. Any time you use the side+b as one of them, you are in danger of falling off and being unable to do anything. And heaven help you if you are P1 and your partner is eying you in an annoyed fashion.
** The official website for ''Brawl'' recommends against using Wario's motorcycle in Wario-Man form for exactly this reason.
*** The idea is to [[CarFu start it, jump off quick and watch it fly into your foes]].

* In any game where a "speed up" or "(insert character name here) moves faster" cheat is discovered and used via a Gameshark, Action Replay or some other cheat device, the result is [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin exactly what it says on the cheat]] and the character moves to '''incredible''' speeds more times than not. However A) some games do this a little ''too'' well, leading to the aforementioned example above of characters crashing into walls or leap off platforms to their dooms faster than you realize what the hell you're doing, B) it is kind-of-sort-of-not-really [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin exactly what it says on the cheat]] where they ''are'' faster than normal, but not enough to, say, beat [[SonicTheHedgehog Sonic]] in a footrace anytime soon, or C) it works well and you can still control the character in most cases, but ''the code caused everything else in the game to speed up'', making it harder than normal or just not worth using in the first place. [[YourMilageMayVary whether or not the code is practical tends to vary for each game that has it]]. Some games also speed up ''the rest of the game'' in addition to the character
* The 300cc and above cheat codes in MarioKart DS are exactly like this, to the point it's pretty hard to turn, and power slides actually slow you down... You also seem to take off when you hit a ramp while using it, which is never a good way to stay away from bottomless pits. There's also the Aero Glider, which has the effects of this trope not purely due to speed, but because it's stats for handling and drift are awful, so it's like driving on ice (and hitting all the walls in the process).

Removed misinformed Real Life example. Machine guns do not go into run-away firing as a result of \"cook off\".

* Modern machine guns have such ridiculous firing rates that they can cause a "cook-off" if they get too hot. Basically the ammo being fed into the chamber is so hot the gunpowder ignites of its own accord and the firearm basically fires until it runs out of ammo. The only solution is to break the chain of ammo and let the gun cool down.
