They stay in this room for a certain amount of time alone (at least 8 minutes) because before they were married, in the Orthodox Jewish faith, a man and a woman are not allowed to be alone together unless they are married. During this time the bride and groom exchange and open gifts, break their fast together, and whatever else takes their fancy as a newly married couple.
