** In ''Film/OnHerMajestysSecretService'', the villain sets off an avalanche which buries Bond and Tracy under a heap of snow. Tracy manages to raise her hand from under the snow, upon which a rescue squad come to her aid.
** ''Film/TheSpyWhoLovedMe''. James Bond is fighting TheDragon Jaws under a wooden scaffolding that holds large stone blocks. Jaws swings a board and hits the scaffolding, causing it to collapse and bury him, apparently killing him. Bond leaves him for dead, but the audience sees Jaws's hand emerging from the pile of debris, showing he's alive.

* ''Film/WeWereSoldiers'': Lt. Herrick's Lost Platoon spends much of the film pinned by NVA troops, calling down artillery strikes so close to their own position that they end up buried in dirt, foliage, and other debris. When a fellow platoon finally manages to get to their position, SGT Savage reveals himself to them by slowly raising his hand.

* How Linda emerges from her grave in ''Film/EvilDead2''.

* An example without a grave or rubble occurs in ''Literature/PeterPan'': Wendy lies apparently dead, having been mistaken for a bird and shot out of the sky with an arrow by one of the Lost Boys, but is revealed to be alive when she raises her arm to stop Peter from executing the boy who shot her.

* At the end of the ''Series/MythBusters'' Halloween special, Jamie and Adam walk away from the "grave" where they just buried a simulaid (in a spandex body suit to protect it) ... and a hand clad in the same spandex pushes up out of the dirt.
* On ''Series/MelrosePlace'', after Jane and Sydney kill Jane's rapist, Richard, they drive out to the woods and bury the body. Sure enough, not two seconds after they drove off, Richard's hand came up out of the grave.

At the time the player would have no idea who or what this is: Metroid Prime reviving as Dark Samus, Samus Aran's nemesis throughout ''[[VideoGame/MetroidPrime2Echoes Prime 2]]'' and ''[[VideoGame/MetroidPrime3Corruption 3]]''.
* If you beat ''VideoGame/CastlevaniaIISimonsQuest'' quickly enough, the ending you receive will show what happens to Simon, then the screen goes dark except for Dracula's tombstone and a hand reaches through the ground.

* The Halloween update for ''VideoGame/{{Overwatch}}'' adds emotes for all the characters in open graves with their items around them, and some of them are doing this. There are a few variations: for example, Hanzo [[DeathSeeker isn't doing anything to get out]], D.Va is making a peace sign with her raised hand, and Widowmaker has raised ''legs'' of survival.

* In an early episode of ''WesternAnimation/TheSimpsons'' motorcycling daredevil Lance Murdock jumps over a pool filled with sharks, lions, gorillas, etc. He manages to jump it successfully but then falls in afterwards. As he's being stretchered out he weakly gives a thumbs up. The announcer cheerfully tells the audience "He's OK, folks!"
* In ''WesternAnimation/HeManAndTheMastersOfTheUniverse2002'', Skeletor is apparently slain by King Hiss when the latter throws him into a pit and seals it up, burying him alive within Snake Mountain. The moment King Hiss is defeated by Zodak in his debut (temporarily at least) and his power over Snake Mountain fades, Skeletor blasts his way out of the ground, with the first thing we see being his outstretched arm.
* In the first episode of ''WesternAnimation/{{Cyberchase}}'' titled "Lost My Marbles", Hacker is buried under a pile of rocks along with his henchmen. However, once the main characters make their escape, Hacker's hand rises out of the rocks before cutting to the next scene.

* Subverted in ''Film/TheQuickAndTheDead''. Cort manages to shoot Spotted Horse, known for his resilience, for the second time and he falls to the ground. He rises his arm, everyone gasps, anticipating another comeback, but his arm then falls back down as he is now dead for good.

* ''Manga/BlackCat''. A wall crumbles down on Train, and his arm shoots up out of the rubble before the rest of him follows.

* In ''Anime/CarnivalPhantasm'', after [[TheyKilledKennyAgain getting killed in every episode]], Lancer finally subverts it in episode 11 with his hand bursting from his grave.

* In ''ComicBook/StarfiresRevenge'', the titular queenpin is believed dead after falling off a window and into a moat as fleeing from ComicBook/{{Supergirl}}. As the main characters are leaving the place, though, her hand breaks the water's surface.

* ''Anime/DragonBallZKai''
** Episode 58. While Vegeta is training at 300 times gravity in preparation for the fight with the androids, he inadvertently makes his training pod explode. When Bulma runs over to see if he's still alive, his hand thrusts out of the pile of rubble to make it clear he's alive.
** Episode 77. When Cell is [[PunchedAcrossTheRoom knocked backwards a huge distance]] by Vegeta, he ends up underwater. A few seconds later his hand raises up out of the water, showing that he survived the attack.

* ''ComicBook/RedRobin'': After Tim blows up the underground League of Assassins base the Council of Spiders was infiltrating, the Wanderer's hand can be seen reaching from the rubble, and an unfortunate rescue worker touches it when trying to help dig out survivors. He dies instantly, and she and the rest of the Council dig themselves out.

* Played with in the climax of the 2019 ''Film/KimPossible'' LiveActionAdaptation: [[spoiler:After Drakken's lair explodes with Athena (revealed as a [[RidiculouslyHumanRobots cybernetic humanoid]]) inside, Rufus spots a hand emerging from the ground. Kim grasps it, and pulls up a severed robot hand. Athena's head then calls out [[LiteralMetaphor "I could use a hand."]] The closing scene reveals that she was recovered and rebuilt, sans Drakken's "evil programming".]]
