If the stones were radioactive and enveloped in a fluorescent substance, the effect could be quite close to what was seen in the movie - when you get more of it close together, the rate of radioactive decay gets up, which in turn means more heat and more light from the fluorescence. Of course, it probably weren't awfully healthy to keep them near yourself and touching them.
**** The rate of decay would actually remain the same (Unless there was neutron-induced fission going on). However, placing a few of them together would increase the temperature, and expose the fluorescent material on the surface of each to radiation from its neighbour.
*** Of course, you still have to explain why they glow brighter and with more intensity when people chant at them.
