* A BodyHorror example is the "[[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vanishing_twin Vanishing Twin Syndrome]]" or "Fetal Resorption", in which one of the twins is condemned to death...in the mother's womb, being assimilated by the survivor twin. The most fitted (and [[NightmareFuel horrible]]) example in fiction is Creator/StephenKing's ''Literature/TheDarkHalf''.

* ''Webcomic/{{Muted}}'': It's odd that Avaline is an only child despite the fact that her family is legendary for producing twin daughters. [[spoiler: Her mother sacrificed the firstborn twin to the demon she sent to kill Abrielle and her children.]]

Part of TwinTropes and FamilyTwistsIndex. Compare DontSplitUsUp and TwinDesynch. See also SeparatedAtBirth, in which neither twin has to die but they must be [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin separated]]. Not to be confused with CloningBlues or [[OurClonesAreIdentical any tropes related]]. Contrast SiblingMurder where one sibling kills the other.

* The story of the birth of Ram and Rem in ''LightNovel/ReZero'' refers to the belief from Japanese folklore, as their oni's people must symbolize medieval Japan and Japanese demons in particular. And so, in the people of these girls it was customary to kill the born twins, as it was considered a bad omen, and because very often the twins shared horns for two, because of what they had more weaker abilities than their other tribesmen. However, [[TeenGenius Ram is a very powerful mage]], so powerful that she is considered incredibly talented, so the girls manage to survive.. And ironically, all their people are killed after 10 years.

* {{Played With}} in ''VideoGame/FireEmblemEngage''. Fell Dragons are always born as twins, since only one of them is expected to live to adulthood. The Fell Xenolouge’s main characters, Nel and Nil, are said to be an exception. However, [[spoiler:it turns out that Nil really ''did'' die at a young age, and that the "Nil" that we’ve been following this whole time is actually a guy named Rafal, who was said to bare an uncanny resemblance to the real Nil. After he died, Nil asked Rafal to [[DeadPersonImpersonation take on his identity]], so that Nel wouldn’t have to deal with losing him. She knew right away, but played along to not upset Rafal. It turns out Rafal’s twin died as well, which is part of why he grew close to Nel and Nil.]]

* An unintentional case in ''VideoGame/ClockTowerIITheStruggleWithin'': [[HereditaryCurse the Maxwell family has a curse that affects twin girls]], and after the birth of twins to the family in 1982, [[BuriedAlive they proceed to immediately bury the twins under a tree]]. During this, two of George Maxwell's enemies, Allen Hale and Phillip Tate, conspire to save the twins in hopes of causing his ruin, however, they only manage to save one, Alyssa. In some irony, Maxwell didn't realise he had fraternal twins, and the twin who died, Bates, was actually a boy, [[TwoSiblingsInOne but his spirit proceeds to enter his sister's body]], [[SelfFulfillingProphecy and as such technically ends up being female anyway]]. While it's ambiguous whether the curse is real or not, Alyssa and Bates [[ArchnemesisDad do end up opposing Maxwell]], [[LaserGuidedKarma and eventually end up playing a part in his demise]].

* Played with Bridget from ''Videogame/GuiltyGear'' games, appearing since ''X2''. In the series, the [[WholesomeCrossdresser androgynous character]] was born male with a twin brother in a village where the birth of same-gender twins is considered bad luck; therefore, her family named and raised her as a girl to protect her. When Bridget grows up, she decides to prove herself as a bounty hunter to show people that she was not cursed, and succeeds in lifting the superstition - not that it helped her from developing some rather severe gender identity issues by ''VideoGame/GuiltyGearStrive''. Ultimately, she concludes that, if proving herself as a man didn't do anything to make her feel better, then some part of her ''wants'' to be a girl - and so she comes out as transgender.
