When making cartoonish shows, appearance reflects a lot a character's personality. So when portraying a [[GirlyGirl feminine character]] the most obvious thing to do is to draw her girly looking and give her a girly voice, but when this trope is on effect, a girly girl can look big, scary, ugly and even masculine.

The gonky femme is a woman that looks far manlier than she really is, as she tends to be a very sweet, girly character. They enjoy make up, boys bands, [[AllGirlsLikePonies ponies]], [[PinkMeansFeminine wear pink dresses]], etc, making them more like "girly girl with a tomboyish streak" rather than [[TomboyWithAGirlyStreak the inversion]]. Their femininity can be [[InvokedTrope invoked]] by the character to compensate her scary looks or just for the comedic aspect.

She may be to bulky and mannish, or very tall and hideous, but no matter how is her design, is decidedly unfeminine in some kind, specially when contrasted with other female characters. More often than not she look mannish, has a muscular build or [[FatGirl excess of fat]] (Sometimes combined) and her face breaks the standard female design with masculine or even non-human features. In some cartoonier shows she can be so ugly that [[{{Gonk}} breaks the media's art style]] or directly being a monster of some kind.

Their femininity can take many forms. She can be motherly and nurturing, with mostly [[HouseWife domestic skills and interests]], or a [[FemmeFatale seductive and charming woman]], or [[FragileFlower weak and susceptible]], [[VanityIsFeminine vain and superficial]], [[GenkiGirl energetic and bubbling]], etc. As long as she acts feminine but looks not, she is this trope. Some of these characters, however, can be physically strong and even aggressive [[BerserkButton when annoyed]], but tend to act girly most of the time.

Because of their masculine appearance, their gender is mostly evident by TertiarySexualCharacteristics. It also may raise some ViewerGenderConfusion.

If the girl is tall -And she usually is- may overlap with HugeSchoolGirl or GentleGiant. See also LadyLooksLikeADude when the character definitely looks like a man. Compare with ButterFace where only the face is "scary, ugly and even masculine" but the body is feminine. Contrast against BrawnHilda, where a girl does not only look mannish, but acts just like that.
