While ''Troika'' is a famous intrumental piece, in the actual 1934 Soviet ''Lieutenant Kije'' film that Prokofiev scored, the melody is accompanied by a chorus singing the lyrics to the old Hussar drinking song that Prokofiev borrowed it from. As the English subtitles of the movie show, the lyrics have zero to do with Christmas or sleigh rides.

* ''Series/{{MASH}}'': "Suicide Is Painless" has lyrics that are used in [[Film/{{Mash}} the film]]: "SuicideIsPainless / It brings on many changes / And I can take or leave it if I please." The lyrics relate to a B-plot involving the mock funeral of unit's dentist, Captain Walter Kosciusko Waldowski ("The Painless Pole") and refer to his suicidal tendencies. Since the character was not included in the TV series, and the lyrics don't relate to the premise of the show as a whole, there was no need to use the lyrics. Ironically, Mike Altman (the lyricist, and director Creator/RobertAltman's son), actually made more money from the movie than his father did due to the song being used sans lyrics by the TV show through 11 seasons and decades of syndication. The song with lyrics even hit #1 on the UK charts in 1980.

The "I" in ''I Love Lucy'' -- plus the lyrics indicating exactly who "I" was -- allowed them to sneak Desi/Ricky into a prominent position on the title card without the execs being any the wiser.
* ''Series/StarTrekTheOriginalSeries'': "Beyond the rim of the starlight/My love is wandering in starflight..." This isn't so much "forgotten" as "never learned", being one of the more well-known examples of writing solely for royalties; Gene Roddenberry actually wrote the lyrics without composer Alexander Courage's knowledge. If you poke about on the Internet enough, you can find a recording of Nichelle "Lt. Uhura" Nichols singing his lyrics -- it's not pretty. When Courage found out, he was pissed, because it meant he made less on royalties since he had to now split it with Roddenberry. It is why he never worked on the series again. * (Unfortunately) occurs with the film version of ''Film/SweeneyToddTheDemonBarberOfFleetStreet''. You know the opening theme? Well, it has lyrics, even more theme than that, and it ''[[CrowningMusicOfAwesome kicks ass]]''.

* One of the most obscure songs by Music/TheBeachBoys is the theme from the 1964-65 sitcom ''[[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karen_(1964_TV_series) Karen]]'', which was played during both the opening and closing credits.
