A VacationEpisode wherein the cast packs up and travels to UsefulNotes/{{Hawaii}}, land of HulaAndLuaus and (of course) {{Hawaiian Shirted Tourist}}s.[[note]]Not to be confused with an episode set in Aloha (pronounced uh-low-uh), Oregon.[[/note]]

Often a thinly veiled excuse for a BeachEpisode, if not outright inexplicable considering how expensive traveling there can be for mainlanders. Expect to see a huge number of native Hawaiians, even though they make up less than a quarter of the population, and a majority of Hawaiians are Asian or part-Asian. Hawaii-themed episodes seemed to reach the peak of their popularity back in the [[TheSeventies 1970s]] and [[TheEighties '80s]], when shows like ''Series/HawaiiFiveO'', ''Series/FantasyIsland'', and ''Series/MagnumPI'' were on the air and going strong.

A subtrope of TropicalIslandAdventure.

!!Examples of one-shot Hawaii-themed episodes:
[[foldercontrol]]

[[folder: Anime and Manga]]
* ''Manga/UruseiYatsura'', complete with GratuitousEnglish.
* Minako was hoping to have one of these in one chapter of ''Manga/CodenameSailorV'', but the plane ended up going to Greece instead.
* ''Manga/SazaeSan'' has a TV special where the family goes to Hawaii.
* ''Anime/OceanWaves'' features a class trip to Hawaii, where Rikako convinces Taku to give her a large amount of cash (supposedly to replace lost traveler's checks.)
* ''Anime/HappinessChargePrettyCure'': The team visits Hawaii, and teams up with the Hawaiian Precures, Cure Sunset and Cure Wave.
* Similar like in the games, the ''Anime/{{Pokemon}}'' anime has Ash and his mother travel to the Alola region, which is based on Hawaii. After their vacation there, Ash stays in Alola to go the Pokémon Trainer School.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Film]]
* ''Film/FiftyFirstDates'' is also set in Hawaii.
* ''Film/ForgettingSarahMarshall'' has the protagonist go to Hawaii to escape his love troubles.
* ''Film/TheDescendants'' is set in Hawaii and the various cultures and internal politics of Hawaii are pivotal to the plot.
* Lampooned in ''Film/AVeryBradySequel'', which features a scene where the bad guy gets a flat running over a tiki idol. [[note]]A tiki idol has a prominent role in the TV episode(s).[[/note]]
* ''Film/{{Gidget}} Goes Hawaiian''
* ''Film/FromHereToEternity'' is set on a Hawaiian army base just before the attack on Pearl Harbor, and while we do see the nice beaches, and all the army men wear Hawaiian shirts while they're out on the town, in general the movie is pretty dark, and we only see a few native Hawaiians around.
* ''Film/SoulSurfer''
* The [[WhatCouldHaveBeen rejected]] movie ''Film/{{Beetlejuice}} Goes Hawaiian''. To which [[Creator/KevinSmith one particular person]] who was offered to do a rewrite answered "Didn't we really say all we needed to say with the first one, or must we go tropical?"
* ''Film/BuffaloSoldiers'': At the end of the movie the main character, a drug-dealing private stationed in late Cold War West Germany, is reassigned to a base in Hawaii after getting away with all his crimes.
* ''Film/FlirtationWalk'' opens on Oahu, as an American soldier there is falling in love with a rich girl. They take a drive along the coast, and they just happen to run into a luau! Where several dozen native Hawaiians are singing and dancing with careful choreography!
* A part of TheFilmOfTheBook adaption of ''Film/EverythingEverything'' is set there for a while.
* ''Film/MikeAndDaveNeedWeddingDates'' is also set there because the movie's main plot, which is the wedding of the Stangle brothers' younger sister, happens there, including the ATV tour of the part of the island where ''Film/JurassicPark'' was filmed.
* Donnie and Marie in ''Film/GoinCoconuts''!
* ''Film/Seven1979'' is set in Hawaii and trailing the mob bosses involves the heroes checking out a lot of the tourist hotspots. Beaches, tropical jungles and hula dancers abound.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Literature]]
* Towards the end, the main character of ''Clone Republic'' takes a vacation to Hawaii with a friend.
* The ''Series/{{Monk}}'' novel ''Mr. Monk Goes to Hawaii'' has Adrian Monk and Natalie Teeger travel to the Hawaiian island of Kauai. Natalie goes to be a bridesmaid at a friend's wedding, while Monk tags along because he can't function without Natalie. Then the duo stumbles upon a rash of criminal activity going on around the place.
** This does happen in-series, in a way, in "Mr. Monk and the Bad Girlfriend". Stottlemeyer is planning to take his girlfriend Linda Fusco to Hawaii, supposedly to propose to her, but then Monk and Natalie expose Linda as having killed her ex-business partner. So after Linda is arrested, we see Stottlemeyer has taken Randy along with him instead. He then tosses away the ring he apparently intended to use to propose to Linda.
* ''Literature/DaysOfInfamy'' by Creator/HarryTurtledove explores the (global) consequences of how UsefulNotes/WW2 would have panned out if the Japanese had followed through Pearl Harbor with a full-scale invasion and occupation of Hawaii. As well as altering the course of the wider war, occupation would not have been fun for American citizens of all ethnicities.
* Eli and his family take a vacation to Gram's house in Hawaii at the end of ''Literature/TheCompound''.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Live-Action TV]]
* The [[JumpingtheShark infamous]] episode of ''Series/HappyDays''.

* ''Series/TheBradyBunch'' - Season 4 started with a three-part family trip to Hawaii, where the kids toured the local beaches, got involved with a cursed tiki, and ran into Don Ho and Vincent Price.
* ''Series/SanfordAndSon''
* ''Series/MyWifeAndKids''
* ''Series/CharliesAngels''
* ''Series/TheFallGuy''
* ''Series/TheRockfordFiles''
* ''Series/SabrinaTheTeenageWitch''
* A two-part crossover story started on ''Series/MagnumPI'' with "Ki'I's Don't Lie" and and ended with the ''Simon And Simon'' episode "Emeralds are Not a Girl's Best Friend". The shows were broadcast back to back on CBS for several years, making this a good ploy to retain viewers for two solid hours.
** Magnum later did the same thing with Series/MurderSheWrote.
** The reboot of ''Series/HawaiiFive0'' did a similar crossover with Series/NCISLosAngeles.
* ''Series/FullHouse''
* ''Series/GreenAcres'': The penultimate episode, "Hawaii Honeymoon", has Lisa and Oliver take a fifth honeymoon in Hawaii. Most of the episode deals with the shenanigans of the hotel owner's daughter. This was a pilot for a spinoff, ''Pam'', that wasn't picked up.

* The first part of "The Doorway", the Season 6 opener on ''Series/MadMen'', contains a storyline of Don's trip to Hawaii with Megan. It's a bit of a {{deconstruction}} of this trope, as the fakeness of the whole '60s Hawaiian vacation is clear and Don's alienation really comes out there.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Music]]
* Music/ElvisPresley did several projects in Hawaii, largely under the influence of his manager, Colonel Tom Parker, who'd been stationed there in the Army. This includes a 1961 benefit concert for the ''USS Arizona'' Memorial, three movies (''Film/BlueHawaii''; ''Girls, Girls, Girls''; and ''Paradise Hawaiian Style''), and the 1973 TV special ''Aloha From Hawaii''.
* Music/TheStrokes made a song about [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MthQSZGH-k8 Hawaii]].
* [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAOiBftC6n0 "Holiday in Waikiki"]] by Music/TheKinks satirizes this trope, complaining about how commercialized and cultureless Hawai'i has become. (For the uninitiated, Honolulu's Waikiki neighborhood has had O'ahu's largest concentration of hotels, tourist traps, and shops for years and years, and is often derided as tacky tourist central. The tourist industry is a bone of contention for some native Hawaiians.)
* Music/BritneySpears has her Live And More special DVD take place on Hawaii, with the usual touristy things and a concert on the beach.

* Music/RoxyMusic had "Hula Kula" as the BSide to "Street Life." Arguably a case of ShownTheirWork as Phil Manzanera spent part of his childhood in Hawai'i.
* "Hello Goodbye" by Music/TheBeatles ends with a repeated "hey la hey aloha" chant, and in the promo film they're joined by hula dancers for this.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Professional Wrestling]]
* In 2006, Wrestling/DramaticDreamTeam found themselves with four Japanese men dressed as Hawaiians after an apparent trip to the area calling themselves the aloha World order.

[[/folder]]

* In ''VideoGame/KingdomHeartsII'', if [[WesternAnimation/LiloAndStitch Stitch]] is summoned, Sora will be warped to Hawaii to be greeted by the little alien before returning to the world he was in before. This is quite amusing if triggered in a world with form change, as it will result in Sora standing in Hawaii in vampire garb or in grey armor with cyan TronLines.
* ''VideoGame/Persona5'' features a school trip to Hawaii for its main cast mid-way into the game. Interestingly, the characters complain about how mundane they find the whole experience, basically doing nothing out of their ordinary routines.
* ''VideoGame/FateGrandOrder'': The "Servant Summer Festival" event takes place on a week-long Hawaii vacation where time mysteriously keeps looping. Funnily enough, the guts of the event were more about making {{doujinshi}} for the local FanConvention that was running at the same time than about the fact that it was in Hawaii (though it might have been due to the fact that [[RealLifeWritesThePlot Comiket was happening when the event came around]]).
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Webcomics]]
%%* ''[[http://aliceotter.com/index.html Alice Otter]]''

It took a while, but when Slinkman finally did believe that lie, the bean scouts also caught on the act (thinking of it more of a fun game). The bean scouts played along so well that, when Lumpus decided to tell the truth, he instead ended believing he was in Hawaii.
* Buster and Babs go to Hawaii in the ''WesternAnimation/TinyToonAdventures'' episode, "[[Recap/TinyToonAdventuresS2E8BusterAndBabsGoHawaiian Buster and Babs Go Hawaiian]]". This episode is notable for [[OfficialFanSubmittedContent being written by Renee Carter, Sarah Creef, and Amy Crosby, three then-eighth grade girls]].

[[folder: Real Life]]
* A popular honeymoon destination.
* Hawaiʻi's got a ''lot'' of international tourists - while the main draw is Japan, many tourists come over from all over Asia (India included) and Europe.
* Disney's Polynesian Village Resort at Ride/WaltDisneyWorld is an entire vacation resort based on this stereotype: all of the buildings are modeled on massively oversized longhouses and various "Hawaiian" music is played (often ukulele tunes) throughout the resort. All of the hotel buildings are named after Pacific islands and chains like Hawaii, Tonga, and Tahiti. Guests entering the Great Ceremonial House (the main building) are often given a lei and a fire dancing/torch lighting ceremony is held every day just before evening. This is only the tip of the iceberg.
** There is a Disney Resort on Hawaiʻi itself, on Oʻahu, called Aulani.
* Resorts on Hawaiʻi itself have been doing something similar for quite a while as well, with paid luaus. All of the Luaus will have a dance: if it's not exploring every culture of the Polynesian islands, they'll demonstrate the various forms of Hula. Kalua pig (a pig pressure-cooked underground) is a must.
* [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiki_culture The Tiki "culture"]] was centered around exotic tropical drinks, bamboo furniture, and hibiscus flowers, and Tiki heads everywhere (from columns that held up the bar itself, to decorations, to cups). ([[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiki Tikis]] are a real thing, but they don't have anything to do with drinking or partying.)
* [[WhatDoYouMeanItsNotPolitical In case you didn't know]], UsefulNotes/BarackObama is from Honolulu, Hawaii. Read his article for more info.

** [[WesternAnimation/MickeyMouse2013 The 2013 Disney Channel reboot]] had the seven minute short "Ku'u Lei Melody", where Mickey, Donald, and Goofy search for an island spirit inspiring Mickey's song.
* ''WesternAnimation/{{Goofy}}'', during his "G.G. Geef" phase, had ''Hello, Aloha'', which had Mr. Geef escape his humdrum office life to escape to paradise.
* ''WesternAnimation/RocketPower'': Tito ''is'' from Hawai'i, and uses pidgin English and sayings.
** The gang also goes there in TheMovie, and it's revealed that [[spoiler: Otto and Reggie's late mother was Hawaiian.]]
* Slinkman in ''WesternAnimation/CampLazlo'' wanted to go to Hawaii for his break, but Lumpus, lazy as always, [[SubvertedTrope tricked him into thinking Camp Kidney]] ''[[SubvertedTrope was]]'' [[SubvertedTrope Hawaii]].

* A popular honeymoon destination.

A Tourist Trap episode whereby the cast packs up and vacations in UsefulNotes/{{Hawaii}}, land of HulaAndLuaus.[[note]]not a Tourist Trap episode set in Aloha (pronounced uh-low-uh), Oregon.[[/note]]

Hawaii-themed episodes seemed to reach the peak of their popularity back in the '70s and '80s, when shows like ''Series/HawaiiFiveO'', ''Series/FantasyIsland'', and ''Series/MagnumPI'' were on the air and going strong.

A subtrope of VacationEpisode and TropicalIslandAdventure.

* [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAOiBftC6n0 "Holiday in Waikiki"]] by Music/TheKinks satirizes this trope, complaining about how commercialized and cultureless Hawai'i has become. (For the uninitiated, Waikiki has been the largest concentration of hotels, tourist traps, and shops for years and years, and is often derided as tacky tourist central. The tourist industry is a bone of contention for some native Hawaiians.)

* ''WesternAnimation/BugsBunny'': ''Wackiki Wabbit'' is not explicitly set in Hawaii, despite the title, but Bugs does a lot of Hawaiian references in the short, such as calling the island "Humuhumunukunukuapua'a'a'a'a'a'a Island", and doing an exotic dance akin to Hawaiian dancing.
