* ''ComicBook/{{Batman}}'':
** DependingOnTheWriter, Arkham Asylum isn't just completely useless as a mental institution with a well-deserved reputation for being a CardboardPrison, but can also be just as bad for the employees. Besides the fairly regular supervillain breakouts that normally leave a good portion of the staff dead or maimed, the Asylum itself is often portrayed as being gloomy and depressing (if not outright rundown), it isn't unusual for there to be MadScientist or AGodAmI types among the higher-ups up to and including the director of the Asylum, and the pay is poor enough that offers of bribes from the aforementioned supervillains are often accepted (even though most villains are fond of pulling off a YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness).
** Zigzagged with actually working for many of the supervillains. Some of them offer surprisingly good terms and perks, such as Two-Face (an accomplished lawyer) providing free legal advice to members of his gang or the Penguin having a 401k plan for his goons. Others may operate under YouHaveFailedMe rules, as Bane did when he first arrived in Gotham to battle Batman.
* Working for ComicBook/DoctorDoom is a dangerous job. Besides the high risk of getting caught up in a super-powered crossfire, Doom is a BadBoss more known for haranguing and roaring YouFool at various henchmen (be they research scientists, guards or technicians) than he is being an understanding and forgiving master. In addition, there's the very real chance that one of Doom's inventions or machines will malfunction and go on a rampage (or worse, Doom may decide to test the invention on '''you'''). Just about the only ones who are spared the worst of Doom's temper are his old friend Boris, and his private chef [[NiceToTheWaiter Pierre]]. And forget about camaraderie: most of Doom's employees fear him a lot more than they care about you, so it isn't impossible to be thrown under the bus.

** Unfortunately, despite the above Nijisanji has never quite shaken those accusations (with some people going so far as to call it a UsefulNotes/BlackCompany). Part of the reason for this is because compared to other [=VTuber=] agencies, Nijisanji has had a higher proportion of graduations. This can be chalked up to the sheer number of livers (as of March 2024, the company had ''177'' livers total) and so there would naturally be a higher chance of people leaving compared to smaller agencies [[note]] for example, close rival WebAnimation/{{hololive}} has 86 active members while Canda-based agency Phase Connect has 27 during the same period[[/note]]. The other reason that Nijisanji has such a reputation is because of its tendency to {{Unperson}} departed talents, a step most other agencies normally take should a talent be terminated/ fired rather than graduate. This means that it's almost impossible for people to find these departed talents barring collab streams, highlights or fan-made clips. Examples of this happening include Suzuhara Lulu, [[https://www.youtube.com/@LuluSuzuhara/featured whose channel only has her graduation stream up left]], or Otogibara Era, whose Youtube channel no longer exists. This is despite the fact those two talents supposedly left the agency on good terms, thus making people suspicious about just how "good" those terms actually were. [[note]] In the case of Lulu, she was known to be TheDeterminator and had multiple archived streams which reached nearly 12 hours, all of which were privated and made inaccessible after her departure.[[/note]]

%% (not to be posted until 2029, as according to NoRecentExamplesPlease) ** Around roughly 2021, information came out (or rather, became more widespread) that ANYCOLOR (known as Ichikara at the time) did not pay the livers a base salary. For example, [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aT1dJnaqr7U here Gundou Mirei mentions that because another liver has been MIA for sometime, she isn't receiving any income]]. This is partially justified by the company's corporate structure: the livers are not considered ANYCOLOR's "employees" but rather "freelancers" in a partnership with ANYCOLOR. However, what rankled people's hackles was the further revelation that livers only receive a 2% cut of merchandise revenue (though the livers get a higher percentage of things like voice packs). [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2fGW5Lt9jw Higuchi Kaede once broke down how she receives her income]], noting that Nijisanji offers a lot of behind-the-scenes support, but also how according to her contract she gets paid by how many songs she produces without consideration to how well they sell i.e. even if a song becomes a viral hit with multiple purchases, she would only receive that flat "per song" payment with no residuals. But by 2024, an alleged version of Nijisanji's contract leaked and included points like how ANYCOLOR management is under no obligation to mediate in any conflict between livers, that a liver under contract must be able and willing to '''move to Japan''' if ordered to, and that ANYCOLOR would only provide a comparatively small amount of support money to purchase necessary equipment. Most damningly, the contract also stipulated that if a liver opts to quit suddenly they must return anything they purchased and utilised while under said contract, even if they purchased these items with their own money (e.g. a new laptop they bought because an old one no longer functioned, costumes or artwork they commissioned). This last point in particular rubbed many people the wrong way, with sneering observations that by those terms if a liver had invited other livers over to their home for a collab, Nijisanji owned the rights to that home.

%% (not to be posted until 2025, as according to NoRecenExamplesPlease) * upd8 was a 2018 [=VTuber=] agency that managed WebAnimation/KizunaAi, among other talents (for example, hololive member Virtual Diva AZKi was part of the INoNaKa Music unit). Their second biggest talent after Kizunai Ai herself was Oda Nobuhime, who originally debuted as an independent [=VTuber=] in April 2018 before joining upd8 in June of that same year. In addition, upd8 experimented with identifying potential replacement voice actors for some talents, allegedly in order to help lighten the talents' workload but which many people viewed as a tacit threat that the company viewed their talents as replaceable (i.e. anyone could step into the role of a particular [=VTuber=] as long as they had the model). Nobuhime would graduate in April 2020, and that same day Kizuna Ai and the groups [=AniMare=] and [=HoneyStrap=] announced they would be parting ways with the agency. A slew of graduations and departures would follow, and by December of 2020 the company announced it was closing its doors. The remaining [=VTubers=] attached to the company continued their activities as independents.

%% (not to be posted until 2029, as according to NoRecentExamplesPlease) * [=VReverie=] is a Singapore-based entertainment company with several [=VTubers=] under its wing. At the end of 2023 and during early 2024, however, it was hit with a slew of graduations that saw almost their entire stable of talents leave, with only '''one out of ten talents''' remaining... with that last talent then announcing her graduation in early May 2024. A third generation had debuted in early 2024, thus preventing an embarrassing situation where an agency lost all their talents in the space of a few months, but it was revealed by the departed talents even before their graduations that they were becoming increasingly unhappy under the company. The breaking point was apparently on October 24th, 2023, after which several of the talents posted on their PL [[note]]Short for "Previous Life" and referring to a previous identity a [=VTuber=] had, in recent years has also been short-hand for "alternative identity"[[/note]] accounts about suffering from stress and anxiety. The cause of this was apparently mismanagement, as the higher ups apparently left the talents to their own devices without much in the way of support but still expecting to reap the benefits. Even other employees like moderators came forward with stories of how management was prone to simply stop communicating with people, even with people they were looking to hire. The whole affair was seen as incredibly ludicrous by [=VTuber=] fans, as despite being a comparatively young and small company [=VReverie=]'s talents had collaborated with much more "big name" [=VTubers=] from the likes of WebAnimation/{{hololive}} and WebAnimation/{{Nijisanji}} as well as routinely brought in stable numbers of concurrent viewers worldwide.

* In 2019, several employee reviews at the website Glassdoors drew attention to awful work conditions at Creator/RoosterTeeth including long hours, unpaid overtime, and extremely stressful work environments. The company's defenders tried to play down these negative reviews as being the work of disgruntled ex-employees and pointed to a high rate of employee retention (a high employee turnover is generally a sign that a company is bad to work at), until former high-ranking Rooster Teeth employees like directors or showrunners came forward to confirm the reviews were in fact true. Furthermore, while employees had a high retention rate, Rooster Teeth was revealed to make heavy use of unpaid interns who were under the impression that their work would lead to a proper job offer, only to be let go once projects were completed or they were so worn out they could no longer continue working. Those unpaid interns didn't count as "employees" and so [[LoopholeAbuse were not included under employee turnover]]. More details can be read [[TroubledProduction/RoosterTeeth here]].

* Brave Group Incorporated is a Japanese company that has multiple [=VTuber=] groups under its umbrella thanks to various subsidiaries. Some examples include Virtual Entertainment (manages VSPO!, the 3rd most popular agency after WebAnimation/{{hololive}} and WebAnimation/{{Nijisanji}}), [=MateReal=] (manages Virtual Idol group Palette Project), Brave Group US (manages English-language group [=V4Mirai=]) and Brave Group Europe (manages Globie, a group geared specifically towards the European market). As of December 2023, it had even opened subsidiaries in Thailand and China (Brave Group APAC and Brave Group China respectively). While the company has an overall good reputation as of 2024, this wasn't always the case. This mostly revolved around the Game Club Project (ゲーム部プロジェクト ''Gemu Bu Purojekuto''), their very first [=VTuber=] group.
** On 05 April 2019, not long after the first year anniversary of the successful Game Club Project the four talents [[TakeThisJobAndShoveIt suddenly quit their roles]] and [[OvershadowedByControversy this naturally completely overshadowed said anniversary]]. Brave Group (which operated under the name Unlimited at the time) took 3 days to issue [[https://unlimited-ent.co.jp/56/ an official statement]] on the matter, confirming that the root of the matter was that the management in charge of the project was engaging in power harassment [[labelnote: explanation]] where someone in a position of power in a company like a manager takes advantage of their power over their subordinates or lower-ranked employees to bully and demean them [[/labelnote]]. Unlimited's solution was to create a new department specifically to oversee talent affairs, having concluded that the issue was that the business management saw the talents (specifically their voice actors) as being interchangeable and expendable, and so could be pushed around and belittled. The four talents agreed to return, beginning to stream again on the 15th of April.
**
In late June and early July 2019, the [=VAs=] for Game Club Project members Miria and Haruto were replaced, resulting in massive backlash from fans (the channel lost more than 30,000 subscribers within a week after the videos were uploaded). Other channels under Unlimited Inc. (e.g. Domyoji Cocoa and Aogiri High School Game Club) were also affected by the backlash, losing subscribers as well. On 17 July, the representative of Unlimited Inc. released a statement apologizing for the delay in the announcement for the replacement. He also stated that the voice actors for Kaede and Ryo will also be replaced in early September later that year, meaning all the original cast would be gone.
** Similarly, the original voice of Domyoji Cocoa left Unlimited by the end of 2019 and was similarly replaced. Combined with the above situation with the Game Club Project (and Cocoa was portrayed as Game Club Project member Domyoji Haruto's younger sister) Unlimited suffered a major hit to its reputation as it was felt nothing had changed since the earlier mistreatment scandal exposé. A new Cocoa channel was set up, but Unlimited eventually deleted the original Cocoa channel due to any videos put up by the 2nd Cocoa inevitably being compared to those put up by her predecessor (at one point, the original Cocoa channel was actually ''gaining'' subscriptions and outstripping the 2nd Cocoa's in a form of fan protest).
** The overall situation caused Unlimited to switch the goal of their company to "[=VTuber=] content" to "character driven content", to the point of calling their characters "[=CTuber=]," a self-made portmanteau of Character Youtuber (キャラクターユーチューバー ''kyarakutaa yuuchuubaa''). This move was received with contempt and plain mockery from fans on Twitter, imageboards and community sites in both Japan and the Western Hemisphere. The reason for this mockery was easy to understand: the Unlimited Inc. higher ups were operating under the assumption fans liked the Game Club Project members for the IP [[note]] Intellectual Property[[/note]] the same way fans of characters like ComicBook/SpiderMan or ComicBook/{{Batman}} might have a favourite iteration of a character (e.g. preferring the Creator/AdamWest Batman over the Creator/MichaelKeaton Batman) but their loyalty would be to the character as a whole rather than a particular actor. They hadn't yet realised that fans of [=VTubers=] saw them as actual people '''''not''''' characters (this was also something that badly affected WebAnimation/KizunaAi, when her company similarly tried to introduce other [=VAs=] to help voice the character). Upon the rebranding into Brave Group, the company was much, much more careful about this sort of thing, preferring to allow talents to graduate rather than try to recast them.

He wasn't even allowed to go home on his first day on the job for ''two days'' because of a deadline, he and his coworkers had to constantly work unpaid overtime, at least one female worker was sexually abused by the C.E.O., taking sick days or vacation days could get you fired, and everybody was repeatedly chewed out for missing deadlines that changed on a whim, for asking the department head for advice, or for making decisions without the department head. It's telling that the first thing Akira does upon the ZombieApocalypse (once he gets over his initial panic) is cheer when he realizes he's free from that company.

Lower-ranked employees are also encouraged to speak out if they see issues. This instills in most employees a strong sense of loyalty, with bad apples kicked out. Played straight with the UND (i.e. The Company), an intergalactic army organised like a corporation. While it does offer similar perks to VTX (e.g. performance bonuses, job opportunities), it also operates under a WeHaveReserves mentality, individual higher ups can be BadBoss-types who do not believe in [[YouHaveFailedMe second chances]], and employees will have their pay docked for damage to company-owned assets like warships and mechs. Can overlap with DangerousWorkplace, but where a Dangerous Workplace can offer danger to life and limb simply due to the nature of the job (e.g. logging still has the risk of a tree falling in just the wrong way), an Abusive Workplace may be more damaging mentally. Compare EvilInc and NebulousEvilOrganisation, which ironically enough are sometimes aren't actually bad places to work at compared to these. WorkplaceHorror can be an extreme example of this, especially when the place of work ''isn't'' supposed to be particularly scary or threatening. A CrapsackWorld may have these all over the place. Almost assured to have more than one BadBoss with a CorruptCorporateExecutive above them. If a character happens to be BosssUnfavoriteEmployee, ''any'' place of work can feel like one of these, especially if other employees get in on the action.

* ''Franchise/StarWars'': While [[Film/ANewHope the]] [[Film/TheEmpireStrikesBack Original]] [[Film/ReturnOfTheJedi Trilogy]] would heavily imply it (most famously with Darth Vader's iconic YouHaveFailedMe moment in ''Empire'' and the ImpliedDeathThreat in ''Return''), ancillary material would reveal that the Galactic Empire works as one of these on a galactic scale. Corruption is tolerated so long as it doesn't do too much damage to the Empire itself, several military officials and civil servants try to carve out personal fiefdoms within the Empire, and military doctrine revolves around WeHaveReserves (for example, the famous TIE Fighters are extremely cheap to build and field compared to the X-Wing utilised by the Rebel Alliance, lacking equipment like shields and an in-built hyperdrive that could improve pilot survivability). The best one can hope for is to be a PunchClockVillain who doesn't go out of the way to KickTheDog or a TokenGoodTeammate.
** Zigzagged in ancillary material in regards to serving under [[TheDragon Darth]] [[TheHeavy Vader]]. Despite just how dangerous it is to work for him directly thanks for his well-deserved reputation for being a BadBoss [[note]] he once had his entire starship maintenance department executed because they failed to have his TIE Fighter ready for departure between the time it took him to take the lift from his personal quarters to his personal hangar [[/note]], there are still a lot of Imperials who're willing to do so. Part of this is the prestige: if Lord Vader can find no fault with you, then [[HadToBeSharp you're some of the best of the best]]. Vader is also not above granting great rewards if he's sufficiently impressed, and it isn't unusual to be promoted multiple ranks under his service. This also means, however, that this means there are bouts of backstabbing as some Imperials try to make themselves look good at the expense of their comrades... though unluckily for them this also happens to be one of Vader's particular {{BerserkButton}}s.

* The term "UsefulNotes/BlackCompany" is a specifically Japanese term that describes a variant of one of these, but is normally associated with white collar (i.e. office) work rather than labor like sweatshops above. They're still extremely abusive, with people often being DrivenToSuicide by just how toxic they are. Unfortunately, many Japanese workplaces have traces of black company methodology in them, which is part of the reason so many young people become disenchanted with working.

** Unsurprisingly implied in many of the bios from the original toyline (which were expanded in the [[ComicBook/TheTransformersMarvel Transformers Universe]] books. Some are obvious, like Megatron being a BadBoss or Soundwave happily using his mind-reading abilities to blackmail other Decepticons. Others are more mundane, with Direct-Hit being a victim of ThePeterPrinciple (he was a competent warrior but promoted to team leader... a role he's completely unsuited for) or Sparkstalker, a brilliant cryptologist best suited for a role in Decepticon military intelligence, who has somehow been assigned as a Firecon and spends most of his time having to physically grab his comrades' heads to at least point them in the direction of the enemy. Blot of the Terrorcons is outright being bullied much of the time due to his condition that causes him to emit foul-smelling oils from his joints, and some mid-ranked officers like Motormaster and Roadblock are described as being both physically and vocally abusive.

** Surprisingly implied with some Autobot bios as well: there are several characters that would be described as "toxic co-workers" by today's standards. Slag of the Dinobots is belligerent and picks fights with just about anyone to the point other Autobots would have no problem just abandoning him to die, Repugnus is described as so personally unpleasant (for example, he thinks that describing how he beats Decepticons to death while drenched in their internal fluids is water-cooler conversation) that he's actually been kicked out of the Autobots a few times only to be let back in [[VetinariJobSecurity due to his extreme competence in his job]], and the Throttlebot Freeway is known to make hurtful "jokes" that is essentially mocking abuse... but either can't take it himself or is very, very careful ''not'' to try that kind of thing with the Autobots who would be willing to beat him half to (or [[DisproportionateRetribution completely to]]) death for it (like the aforementioned Slag and Repugnus). In addition, the Micromaster Air Patrol is one of the Autobots' best aerial units, but they have awful interpersonal issues [[note]] Tread Bolt makes himself unpopular by praciticing his stealth skills by sneaking into the private quarters of other Autobots, Blaze Master is a borderline SociopathicSoldier who enjoys watching his enemies scream as they melt due to his napalm-like corrosive spray and clashes with ThePollyanna Sky High, while team leader Eagle Eye just ignores all these issues [[/note]] that Autobot High Command has never seen fit to correct as they still manage to get the job done. [[note]] In the Japanese continuity, Eagle Eye's incompetence is eventually found out and he defects to the Decepticons out of spite.[[/note]]

Clarity with comma (especially about the part on overseas video game fans), and moving the Kojima mention to the later part, as it also strengthened the ensuing vitriol

* In 2015, Creator/{{Konami}} was hit by a series of PR incidents that painted the company in a bad light. Besides an infamous feud with Creator/HideoKojima, it was also revealed via an unflattering interview that Konami had been making its video game division's life a living hell, with the employees likening it to being sent to prison (among other things, they were subjected to huge amounts of pointless oversight, and employees punished by having to do janitorial work for other divisions). It was strongly suspected this was done in order to make the gaming division's employees quit so as to save the company money from firing them, as the CEO of the time intended to take Konami away from producing AAA video games and instead focus on mobile game titles and pachinko machines. While such tactics aren't considered particularly eyebrow-raising in Japan, when the news spread overseas video game fans were livid and Konami has [[NeverLiveItDown suffered from a reputation]] as a UsefulNotes/BlackCompany ever since. Their treatment of the video game division also came back to bite them during the COVID-19 pandemic, as profits from the astoundingly lucrative pachinko slot market dried up dramatically (and new rules being put into place by the Japanese government would've eaten into said profits anyway). With the video game division gutted, Konami had to rely on external studios to develop games while they tried to rebuild.

But some places of work don't bother. Employees are just a cog in a machine, easily replaceable, and treated as such. Low pay, verbal (or even physical) abuse, dangerous work environments, lack of support or guidance, awful work-life balance, an Abusive Workplace will, simply put, be an awful place to work.

What makes them so abusive isn't just the place of work having NoOSHACompliance, the presence of a MeanBoss or PointyHairedBoss, an overabundance of [[ObstructiveBureaucrat unreasonable or even outright oppresive rules]], and awful coworkers who may either [[WeaselCoWorker be lazy and push their work off on others (especially low-ranked people)]] or outright be schemers and backstabbers. Rather, it's the presence of all those factors '''at once'''. The very culture of the workplace is toxic by nature, with a SocialDarwinist outlook where even employees are pitted against each other.

These unlucky sorts are given ''mostly'' airtight and solvent-resistant uniforms, and armed with chemical weaponry meant to make the surrounding environment hostile enough to enemy forces that COBRA has the advantage. Justified in that being appointed to the Toxo-Vipers is a punishment, and so COBRA is perfectly fine cheaping out on their equipment.

* In the entertainment industry, the term [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crunch_(video_games) "crunch"]] originally referred to compulsory uncompensated overtime needed to ensure a video game was ready to launch on schedule.
