* DroppedABridgeOnHim: The main antagonist in ''Captive'' and ''Shadow of the Red Vixen'' is mentioned to have committed suicide off screen in the next story.

* IdenticalGrandfather: Lord Rolas Darktail the First, who stars in a couple of novellas set prior to the ''Red Vixen'' series, set in Foxen Prime's pre-spaceflight era. Just as dark furred, amber eyed, and romantically moody as his modern counterpart.

* MasculineFeminineGayCouple: Skirted with Alinadar and Sallivera. Salli is very feminine, rarely being not wearing dress. However while Ali is her bodyguard, she's usually dressed in a blouse and skirt, even if she's also wearing a gunbelt.

* MadeASlave: Alinadar after she kidnapped by the pirates who killed her family, and then remained one even after she was captured/rescued by the Red Vixen

* BadassGay: Ali, who ''will'' kick the ass of anyone who threatens Salli.

* BerserkButton: Do ''not'' attempt to harm a vixen in Rolas' presence.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Lady Melanie, who is secretly the Red Vixen, and Sallivera who beats a pirate to death with an iron bar while rescuing Alinadar.

It turns out towards the end of "Shadow of the Red Vixen" that Melanie was trying to invoke this when she hired Ali to be Salli's bodyguard.

* ButNotTooBi: [[spoiler: Rolas]] though his male/male relationship has been over for ten years or so at the start of the series.

* ElectronicEyes: Lady Sallivera Darktail's right eye is prosthetic thanks to her ex-husband's abuse, she can make it look like a natural eye of any color but halfway through "Captive" she turns off the camouflage to signify that she's no longer going to hide what happened.

* EvilIsPetty: Bloody Margo, having stripped and bound Salli to a chair, ignores the latter's request for a bucket to throw up in as she gets sick from being stunned twice in a row and having her [[ElectronicEyes cybernetic eye]] pulled out.

* FingerlessGloves: Alinadar's signature item of clothing, they allow her to use her claws in a fight and are loaded with buckshot so her punches have more impact.

* NarrativeProfanityFilter: Occasionally used depending on who's point of view the scene is focusing on. When Rolas and the Red Vixen encounter one of her enemies, she's noted as using "A short, very human, curse word." Scenes from Alinadar's perspective just have Ali letting out a simple "Fuck" when she curses.

* WalkingArmory: Alinadar carries two stunners, weighed gloves, a pair of folding knives, and a third, larger knife, and that's just what the starport's security [[ExtendedDisarming pulled off her]], she also had blasting caps and detonators. When she was a pirate she had at least one plasma pistol too.

* AllWomenAreDomsAllMenAreSubs: Seems to be the case with Rolas and the Red Vixen's interactions in the books, even if he's a bit reluctant to admit he likes it. However the various shorts on the author's Website/LiveJournal and other sites indicate that [[spoiler: Melanie]] occasionally likes to be tied up and spanked too. Meanwhile Alinadar is unmistakably submissive, which Sallivera finds a bit disturbing [[MadeASlave considering her past.]]

* KarmaHoudini: The fact that the Red Vixen is responsible for the death of one the crew of the ''Sallivera'' is pretty much dropped after she's seen expressing remorse over it[[spoiler: as Melanie]].

* MadeASlave: [[spoiler: Alinadar]] after she was rescued by the [[spoiler: Red Vixen]]. ItMakesSenseInContext. And actually before then when Bloody Margo killed her family and kidnapped her when she was six.

* TheNoseKnows: Foxens place great importance on scent. The Red Vixen wears heavy perfume to prevent identification [[spoiler: and Rolas recognizes Melanie as her by taste]]. And Commander Blacksailor recognizes Alinadar as his long-lost sister by her scent, and the fact that she has living relatives finally breaks through to Ali when he gives her a toy that belonged to his sister which is still saturated with her scent due to being sealed in a plastic bag for twenty years.

* PropertyOfLove: Played straight, skirted and subverted. Ali ''wants'' this in her relationship with [[spoiler: the Red Vixen, who ''thinks'']] she can arrange that between Ali and Salli. Whereupon Salli puts her footpad down, allowing Ali time to get her head together so they can enter a more equal relationship.

* RecruitedFromTheGutter: How Ali was recruited by [[spoiler: the Red Vixen]].

* SecondaryCharacterTitle: The series as a whole and half the individual titles refer to the Red Vixen, a character with very little actual screen time [[spoiler: and most of it as her SecretIdentity Lady Melanie]] and the story is only told once from her perspective.

* SlaveCollar: In ''Shadow of the Red Vixen'', Alinadar wears a silver choker made of interwoven chains to symbolize her ownership by [[spoiler: the Red Vixen]].

* SubmissiveBadass: Ali, in the most literal sense of the term, acting as bodyguard and slave to [[spoiler: the Red Vixen]], and TheChampion to Lady Salli.
* [[SurprisinglyGoodForeignLanguage Surprisingly Good Arabic]]: Part of the background of the wazagans is that their world suffered a PrimeDirective failure, so much of their own religion and culture was dumped in favor of a oddball combination of Christianity and Muslim. As a result, the wazagans tend to use a lot of Arabic for flavor. Fortunately Day's cover artist is a native of Saudi Arabia, ensuring the Arabic translations are authentic.

* TeethClenchedTeamwork: Salli loathes Melanie for [[spoiler: enslaving Ali]] and Melanie thinks Salli is a stuck-up prig, but both of them put their feelings of animosity aside whenever Ali is in trouble.

* TookALevelInJerkass: Melanie's actions in "Captive" look a lot less romantic in the later stories, as she fails to convince her in-laws that [[spoiler: enslaving Ali]] was the right thing to do.

* WhatTheHellHero: Salli calls out [[spoiler: Melanie]] and punches her in the nose after finding out she'd [[spoiler: enslaved Alinadar in her persona as the Red Vixen]].

* ShipperOnDeck: Melanie does her best to hook up Salli and Ali, and even has has shades of this towards [[spoiler: ''Rolas'' when she finds out he had a boyfriend in his youth]], happily cheering them on when he and Dak kiss.

* NoSuchThingAsAlienPopCulture: Averted. In ''Shadow of the Red Vixen'' Ali mentions enjoying [[SoBadItsGood lousy movies]], and supplementary material details Foxen comedy shows, which take inspiration from classic CommediaDellArte. In ''Doubt'' she's seen watching a cheesy {{Kaiju}} film with foxen actors in rubber suits and human actors with forehead prosthetics, and mentions that the Earth equivalents often have foxen actors with dyed fur and fake fangs and ridiculous camera angles as the aliens. It's so ridiculous that Salli starts [[{{MST}} riffing]] the movie.
