* RagtagBunchOfMisfits: The group of cops nicknamed "Animal Kingdom" consists of witch with psychopathic tendencies (Dora), a perpetually-depressed junkie (Witkacy), an alpha male (Hare, currently in psychiatric hospital), a boorish drunk (Nowakowski) and two newbies nobody else wanted. They stay in service because they're really good at the job, but stay on the same team because nobody else would take them.

* OurVampiresAreDifferent: Immortal, although not invincible, and stay the age they were when transformed. They have [[PsychicPowers mental powers]] and can use them against any other sentient being. A vampire can create new vampires, but he/she stays mentally bonded with his/her spawn and is obliged to treat them like children. They can also create human servants, renfields, who are granted very long lifespan, but must obey every wish of their master. Most powerful vampires (well-fed and posessing numerous spawn, that is) can walk out in daylight, which they do mostly [[ForTheLulz to show off]]. They are organized into pseudo-feudal dependancy system, with regional Master on the top and mere loyal subordinates or local landlords at the bottom. Transforming someone into vampire without one's landlord's knowledge is considered a serious gaffe, if not outright crime, and disobedience is punished with death. As AuthorityEqualsAsskicking, vampire can get a higher position by means of a KlingonPromotion, although whether they do it by an official duel or coup depends on the situation. Oh, and most of them can [[MindManipulation control mortal minds]] to some extent.

The story centers on Theodora "Dora" Wilk, living a double life as a police officer in Toruń and succubus-like [[WitchSpecies witch]] in its magical counterpart, Thorn. While using her powers to aid her during investigations, she tries to keep herself away from magical FantasyKitchenSink world. The magical world, however, comes to her, as the Council governing Thorn, asks her to investigate missing and dead magical creatures. Aided by a [[HotAsHell devil Miron]] and his [[HeterosexualLifePartners friend]], [[OddCouple angel]] Joshua, she sets off to find so-called "Soul Thief", at the same time solving a murder case in Muggle world. But with world like Thorn, that's just the tip of the iceberg...

* MeaningfulName: Wilk, Polish for Wolf. [[spoiler:Dora's great...grandma was werewolf and Dora has some genes, as proven in ''Gods Must Be Crazy'']]

* OrangeAndBlueMorality: Gods don't really care about good or evil - not as much as about "mine" and "theirs". Vampires' morality is not exactly clear, too, and werewolves think in termes "good for the pack" or "good for me".

* CoversAlwaysLie: Averted in second edition of the series - covers shows Dora in different badass positions, although the model seems to change every book. However, the first edition of ''Soul Thief'' is guilty: the entire Trio was shown on the cover and though they got Miron and Joshua *almost* right, Dora had wrong hair color and complexion. But the worst of all was the blurb that suggested ''Soul Thief'' was yet another paranormal romance (with a healthy serving of [[IncrediblyLamePun lame puns]]). It probably scared off a lot of readers.

Expecting interrogation, maybe imprisonment, they come in armed, but as vampire carnival party rule is "dress as non-vampire", The Trio - none of whom is a vampire - decide to dress as vampires from famous movies.

Archangels were a bit surprised when [[spoiler:Raphael]] started to hate half-bloods and magicals, but as it begun during Inquisition times, [[GenreBlind they never thought there was anything wrong]] since he's always been antisocial and had no love for non-angels. Turns out [[spoiler:he was possessed all along]]. Played straight when Dora finds out that [[spoiler: Raphael, hater of all non-angelic, has illegitimate and half-blood son]]. It's serious OOC for him.

* OurMonstersAreDifferent: Most of the paranormal creatures - magicals - comes from Slavic mythology, so we're treated with [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strzyga strigas]], szyszymoras[[note]]read it: shi-shi-mor-ah[[/note]], [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rusalka rusalkas]] and other creatures that didn't look at all humanlike in the original legends. Here, however, they can all pass for humans easily, though some need to hide tiny details like pointy ears or extra gills. They can interbreed and chidren inherit some of the genes from both sides.

* OurWerewolvesAreDifferent: They can shapeshift whenever they want, although younger ones must do it by full moon, as well. Most are criminals, since their many animal and predator instincts just don't mesh with society, and favor BDSM. Men hold higher position than women. Werewolves are organised into packs, each holding a territory (a city or geographical region in wilder parts of the world). They are ruled by alpha male, aided by his [[Lancer second-in-command]], beta. Notable pack members include omega, who acts as a negotiator, and lupa, the leading female of the pack. One's rank in the pack depends on one's strength (Jadowska seems to really love AuthorityEqualsAsskicking trope), yet every werewolf (even from outside the pack) can challenge alpha for his position. Such conflicts are solved in official duels and usually end with loser's death. New alpha usually replaces all the important positions in the pack.

* ArchangelMichael: Leader of the Archangel Council (Heaven's ruling body), doesn't show up until the end of ''Gods Must Be Crazy''. As Gabriel and Lucipher, he's [[spoiler: connected with them by the same Triumvirate mental bond Trio forms later]]. Dora describes his appearance as [[UncannyValley "too perfect to seem human"]].

* BigGood: Judeo-Christianic God Almighty and magical world's Goddess (aka Mother Nature). They both care about the world and every single inhabitant of it and are willing to help out as much as they can. "Closer to Earth" (sarcasm intended) are Archangels Michael and Uriel - even if they can't stop some things because of ancient laws, they care about more than just themselves and promise to get to the truth and deliver justice if Trio wouldn't be able to.

* DreamingOfThingsToCome: One of Dora's powers which sometimes overlaps with TalkingInYourDreams (mostly in ''Gods Must Be Crazy'') and DreamSpying (mostly in ''Winner Takes It All''). Sometimes they can be downright annoying, but they do more good than bad. Except when you're spying on the dreamsnatcher, because he can go full [[Film/NightmareOnElmStreet Freddy Krueger]] on you.

''Dora Wilk Series'' (formal name: ''Witch's Hexalogy'') is UrbanFantasy book series by Polish author Aneta Jadowska. The story centers on police officer turned private investigator Theodora "Dora" Wilk (Polish for "Wolf") who also happens to be a witch with a horribly tangled family tree. She's aided by a [[HotAsHell devil Miron]], his [[HeterosexualLifePartners friend]] Joshua ([[OurAngelsAreDifferent angel]]) and [[TheBartender bartender]] demon Leon, as well as Katia, a {{Necromancer}} with a {{Cloud Cuckoo Lander}} vibe and Witkacy, a fellow cop [[spoiler: and a WitchDoctor]]. All the books are set in northern Poland, mostly in Toruń and Three-City[[note]] three big cities on Polish coast - Gdańsk (Danzig), Gdynia and Sopot - which are often treated as one because they lie very close to each other and thus have lots of joint administration[[/note]] .

In series, our vanilla world exists alongside the magical one, accessible by a few gates. In this world, cities and places match those in ours (Thorn for Toruń, Triple Alliance for Three-City) and the locals have [[MagiTek electricity and phones]]. Said "locals" are magical creatures such as vampires, werewolves, strigas, wraiths, ghosts, succubi, witches, magicians, shapeshifters, loads and loads of Slavic mythology beasts [[AllMythsAreTrue and more]]. As "magicals", werewolves and vampires are all very territorial, signing of Three-Side Treaty was found necessary - it's basically the Constitution for magical world.

Alongside ''this'' world there are Hell and Heaven, currently at peace with each other. Because of FantasticRacism, Judeo-Christian world and magical world didn't really used to get along (with the witch burning, Inquisition, sacrificing priests and such), so a couple of centuries ago an Interdimensional Treaty was signed to keep peace. The stories are set in modern times and deal (among other things) with the consequences of both Treaties and FantasticRacism, but a lot of HilarityEnsues, too.

Oh, and the "complex genealogy" thing?. Our heroine is descended from a priestess of an old magical "fertility cult" which means ShesGotLegs along with an aura that, when not shielded, falls oxen at twenty feet ([[UnwantedHarem she's usually not very happy about the attention, though]]), so quite often CoitusEnsues as well.
