This laconic explicitly had nothing to do with the trope, which seems to be a stock phrase of some kind at this point. I'll look into it more, but for now I adapted the first sentence from the YKTTW draft of this trope: "In a nutshell, someone brings up a potential topic about someone close to them. Another one asks what happened to them, and the former frowns, saying 'They're dead'."
